Killing Eve Season 2 Finale: Orpheus and Eurydice Parallel

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I saw the last few scenes of Villanelle and Eve going through the ruins together, I saw major parallels between the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Here’s a brief summary of the myth for those who are unfamiliar with it: Eurydice is Orpheus’ wife who gets killed by poison. So he goes to the Underworld to get her back. He convinces Hades to let her come back to life, and Hades agrees on the condition that on the way up to the Overworld, Orpheus must not look back. Almost near the surface, Orpheus is not able to help himself and he looks back, and gets a fleeting glimpse of his beloved wife before she’s gone forever. When Eve and Villanelle go through the underground ruins together, they are escaping from a metaphorical underworld (the failed mission and loss of their respective jobs) where Villanelle (Orpheus) is guiding Eve (Eurydice) to the Overworld (their free life together). Villanelle looks back countless times, which I saw as foreshadowing of something bad happening to Eve. Aside from literally looking back, the idea of “looking back” could also be a metaphor for Villanelle’s hopeful and fantastical ideas of their life together; and by obsessing over her picture perfect life with Eve (looking back), she ultimately loses Eve (like Orpheus lost Eurydice). When Villanelle shoots her, Eve, like Eurydice, is sent back to a metaphorical Underworld (a.k.a the death of their relationship).

Eve Polastri (2x08 end scene)

I just wanted to do a brief character analysis of Eve’s mindset during the last scene. I am definitely not an expert, but this is just what I took from it. 

At this point Eve has finally given it all up for Villanelle, but I’m not sure she even knows where they can go from here. She made a decision, like many of her past decisions, impulsively and driven by her emotions. Carolyn was someone she trusted, who used her to achieve her own goal. When Villanelle reveals her gun, she realizes that she too used her to achieve her goal in manipulating Eve to be more like her. And with that on top of the fact that she just gruesomely murdered someone, it’s all just too much. She left MI6 because she hated being used, and the person she left it for/with did essentially the same thing, but for a different reason. This realization somewhat snaps Eve out of her shock, because before she was just going through the motions because she did something horrible that she thought she had to do. But she didn’t have to do it at all, and that is devastating for her. She finally starts really listening to what Villanelle is saying, and she knows that what Villanelle wants is a fantasy. So she finally stands up for herself, even though I think she knows what it might cost her. When Villanelle asked her earlier if she thought she could kill her, Eve said yes. So I think she knows what is going to happen, and that’s why she has tears. She has no where to go anymore, but she knows that she can no longer go with Villanelle, not after what she let Eve do.

Killing Eve Finale

Honestly... I am a little upset about the finale, but I am not surprised. I think this finale seems very true to the story and to what the actors (Sandra and Jodie) have been saying the whole time, that Villanelle and Eve could really not live happily ever after. Even though I love shipping Villaneve, I understand that that is just a fantasy, and it wouldn’t be true to the show if they ran off together with a perfect ending. Regardless, the episode was still very good, it just didn’t make me feel good, if that makes sense.

i love watching actors pretend to drink from empty cups. they can’t do it. it’s like they never drank anything in real life. doesn’t matter if they went to julliard or yale or have an egot or played hamlet on the west end. time traveling? fighting aliens? finding seth rogen attractive? no problem. but give them an empty cup and gravity fights against them. their imagination has limits.
