The Mysterious Hatchling (Closed RP)
(( Okay, so: This needs a bit of background and explanation to begin with, so read on under the cut… ))

A smile came to Vanem's aged face under his mask as he approached the settlement he had come to call home. The march of days had become months, and then finally years, and now it seemed he knew no other place that held such fond memories. Despite having been a bit out of touch with his friends lately, mostly due to his own increasing penchant for travel despite his advanced years, he still found home to be a welcome sight.
And after the excitement of his latest trip, he was looking forward to the quiet atmosphere of the tiny settlement, where nothing seemed to go at any more than a snail's pace.
Thus as he approached, he was quite astonished to see that the entire settlement was abuzz with activity. Vanem frowned slightly. Had he gotten the schedule wrong again for when the merchants visited the town? He was sure that the bazaar was not for another moon cycle.
"I do hope nothing dreadful as happened," said Vanem as he picked up the pace, his cloak swirling about his feet.
Yet nothing was at all apprehensive about the townsfolk who had gathered along its only thoroughfare. If anything, there was a sense of celebration in the air. In the absence of the merchants, that could mean only one thing: some very interesting tales had come this way.
The settlement was so small and out of the way that any sort of news from the rest of the world was enough to cause a bit of a stir. Vanem sighed but smiled softly. Often many of the tales were rather wild, having been well-distorted before reaching the ears of the townsfolk. Yet Vanem consistently relied on such stories to further his research, and he often found that such things had a kernel of truth to them. Unfortunately, the townsfolk did not do such research, content to rely on the strength of the telling of the story rather than the strength of the truth behind it.
"Ah, Vanem!" cried a townsfolk as he approached. "Good that you are here. If anyone should hear such a tale, it's one of the town elders."
Vanem had once tried strenuously to dissuade the town from giving him such a title, but since then he had given up that battle and accepted the honorary title with as much grace as he could muster. "And what story would this be, my good friend?" asked Vanem.
"Why, about the sighting of another Spirit of the Flow! It's the most amazing thing I have ever heard!"
Vanem was given pause. He knew of only one Spirit of the Flow (or more colloquially "flow creature"), and that was along the Journey itself. He always thought it to be a physical entity despite is somewhat ethereal nature, found only when the Tower was filled with its strange liquefied energy.
He recalled his good friend Thunder being interested in it, but where it was located in such a confined space, she had feared harming it or damaging the Tower. "Please, good sir," said Vanem. "Tell me all that you know ..."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, Vanem found himself on the road towards parts unknown. Normally he would not simply turn right around after having just come back from a trip to head right on out again, but his curiosity had been piqued. Too many details of the story remained consistent in the retelling, despite some of the more lurid elements, such as the creature glowing blue. He had not recalled the creature in the Tower ever appearing in such a manner, thus he was ready to eliminate that detail as a possible embellishment.
He climbed a large sand dune and shielded his eyes from the sun with his hand as he spied his destination: a cave that he had not known about. It did not appear on any of the maps he had so laboriously drawn.
He smiled. He loved how this world still held secrets despite how much he explored it.
Several cloth dolphins chirped and spun playfully around him, his cloak glowing at their touch and imparting much needed energy. "Thank you, my friends," he called out to them in their own chirping language before sliding down the lee side of the dune. "Now, as much as you're curious as well, please remain at the entrance of the cave just to be safe."
The dolphins chirped a reluctant agreement at him.
Vanem sometimes found ancient equipment in such places, and sometimes a dormant war machine. Having the dolphins too close would just make them a target, and that's the last thing he wanted. He paused at the mouth of the cave, listening intently with his better ear for any sign of working machinery. A cool breeze was the only thing he found, and he removed his mask so that he might take advantage of it after having traveled in the hot sun for so long.
Vanem eased inside, lighting his lantern when the outside sunlight would no longer reach. He paused again as he heard his own footsteps echo and listened again, this time for the noises he remembered that the flow creature of the Tower made. All he heard was a gentle rustling.
"Very odd," Vanem murmured as he ventured further.
Vanem headed towards the rustling noise, and as he came around the bend in a passage, he saw several cloth creatures waving contently like seaweed under water. Vanem felt an affinity for them at once, remembering how these simple life forms could be such a boon to inexperienced Wayfarers. Yet as he approached the thick of this community of creatures, his eyes widened as he beheld a sight he had never seen in his life.
Nestled in the center of the thickest tangle of cloth seaweed was a large white, slightly misshapen orb. Vanem lowered the light from his lantern and found that the object glowed faintly. He took another tentative step towards it. The closest thing he could think of as to what he was seeing was a large cocoon.
"Kvailas," said Vanem in a hushed voice. "Have you ever seen the likes of this?"
His ancestor replied after a pause. <I know of nothing like this, Vanem, but then again, this world has surprised me before.>
Vanem had not recalled anything at all like this in his study of any document he had come across in his travels. Even the Ancient Texts that Thunder had given him held nothing at all like this in their pages.
With that, he had an idea.
Vanem headed away, carefully retracing his steps so he would remember how to get back to the chamber. As soon as he reached the entrance, he summoned one of the cloth dolphins to him.
"I have need of you," said Vanem as he extracted a parchment and pen. "You must deliver a message for me to Thunder at once. She will want to know about this ..."

Best Laid Plans (closed RP with Thunder)
Previous post
Vanem had not wanted to let his disappointment show on his face, but it had been difficult, and ultimately, impossible. This had really been his own true lead since he had arrived. Indeed, this was the first being he had come across who even understood the nature of his predicament, let along knew anything about the forces behind it. He considered himself fortunate to at least have someone who could sympathize with his problem and not simply stare at him blankly when he mentioned it, or change the subject when they grew uncomfortable with the fact that they were faced with something in which they knew naught.
That there was hope that a solution might come some day gave him mixed feelings. Vanem had no idea how many years of life he had left. While he certainly felt fit and healthy, he was unsure as to what the longevity of his own kind was. Generally such things were measured in numbers of rebirths, but that was something now largely in his past. He did briefly toy with the idea of attempting the Journey again in this world and seeing if he had one more rebirth left in him that would, somehow, magically return him home, but that was a long shot at best. He preferred not to risk his continued existence in any plane on such a wild theory.
He did manage a small smile at Thunder’s invitation to deeper discussion. “I would be most honored to enter a continued conversation with you,” he said. “I am quite willing to share what I know in exchange for what you might know or find in your own investigations.”
He paused for a moment before continuing. “To be honest, I would like to know more about this world as well. It appears to share enough similarities with my own that perhaps its past is similar enough that their accumulated knowledge may provide the answers that I seek.”
Vanem tried not to harp on his own situation, but it was difficult, again given that he was not getting any younger. He knew that the likelihood of a solution simply popping out at them was slim. But perhaps if he had basic understanding of the ancient scientific knowledge of this world, that could assist him.
“I suppose I should ask this now,” said Vanem. “If you do find some advanced knowledge left by the ancients, is there anything inherent in your rules or ethics that would prevent you from sharing such knowledge with me?”
The Big Reveal
(( All right, so… Vanem-mod and I had intended to wait and make this announcement after we finished our “Best Laid Plans” RP. That’s taking us long enough, though, we decided it was better to do it now instead, while there’s at least a few people still reading both our blogs.
I’ve said in the past that he and I know each other outside of Tumblr, and this is in fact quite true. However, I’ve also tended to phrase such statements in a way that implied our relationship was still long-distance and/or internet-based, and that… is somewhat less true. LOL Now, it did start out that way–but that was all the way back in 1995, and much has changed in the intervening time. For the last 18 years, he and I have not only lived in the same town but the same household, and been very happily married for almost as long. ::smiles::
So, I don’t know just how much of a revelation that really is to anyone; maybe some of you already had your suspicions, and this is just confirmation that they’re correct. In any case, now you know that he and I are rather more than just net-friends (and I can personally confirm that the mod is as big a sweetheart as his OC, by the way! LOL). I encouraged him to start his blog here on Tumblr when he first had the idea for the character, even though he was doubtful of whether he could make it work since he wasn’t a graphic artist. As detailed in this post, however, I myself held back from joining in for a good bit longer, simply because I wasn’t into Journey as a game nearly as much. But, as he continued to develop Vanem and add more details to his back-plot, there was one post–and now I can’t find it, which annoys me–where he tacked on a tag at the end about, Where is Vanem getting all these ancient texts?
Well, even though he might have intended it as nothing more than a throwaway joke, my writer’s mind just seized on the idea, and said, “That’s a very good question; where DID all those ancient books come from?” And within a pretty short time–maybe only a few days–the concept for Thunder and her fellow Bookwyrms and their grand task had popped into my mind, pretty much fully formed. I told him about it over supper one evening, he loved the idea, and we agreed pretty quickly that, “All right, I guess I better set up my own blog and we’ll RP the whole story.” It took me several months longer to really get my act together, though, just because there was Real Life to deal with and I wanted to get Thunder’s own back-story written up before we started the actual RP. And rest assured that the RP will be completed, by the way, it’s just that he and I both have other projects and things going on in our lives, and we have to sort of fit this one in around higher-priority stuff. (I also have something else in the works as part of an art trade with VicZar, so that’s taking up a bit of my time as well–I won’t say exactly what the whole thing involves as yet, but here’s a little hint: Thunder + Lore = instant adorable. LOL)
Anyway, that’s the deal, and look for some new RP posts hopefully this coming week! ))
(( You need to stop saying all those nice things about me or I’ll get a swell head or something ;)
Isn’t thunder-mod such a sweet person? And that’s a totally unbiased opinion from her husband of course ;) ))
((Since peeps be poppin’, does anyone have any Journey fanfics or fan poetry that they enjoy or wrote? I’ve found a few short pieces on places like Ao3 that I really liked, but was wondering if there were more lurking about. I’m sure I’ve probably missed a few links even on here for some.))

Best had slipped down to just beneath the sill, the sand slowly claiming him as he sleeps. For all his talk of not sleeping during the day, and being 100% awake, Best is a liar and easily given into the urge to rest. Therefore he misses all the fun of Daughter rummaging through Vanem’s house before he woke up. Which is a shame, because Best hasn’t been able to rummage through Vanem’s house much since it’s inexplicably gotten harder to get in.
Daughter stands very, very still, tiny sword in hand, as she and Vanem size each other up. Without any warning, she falls over, playing doll.
Unlike Best, she knows good and well she’s not supposed to be inside Vanem’s house, but like Best, she doesn’t have very good problem-solving strategies. Most involve violence of some kind, but Daughter can’t attack him, since he’s neither taken her weapons nor is a war machine (that she knows of). Maybe if she stays still, Vanem’ll think she’s not alive and just go away so she can sneak back out.
Vanem looked down quizzically at the tiny Wayfarer -- no, doll -- no, Wayfarer -- no, doll -- and scratched his head. He was sure he had seen her move. Certainly she had been standing there just a moment ago. Objects like that tend not to spontaneously stand on their own nor fall over of their own volition. He was sure there was a solution to this apparent logical conundrum, but it was not coming to him.
“I ... suppose I should get back to that cup of tea,” Vanem said distractedly as he rose to his feet. “Yes, everything always seems better after some tea. I believe that may be some universal law of nature.
He considered reaching down and picking up the Wayf--doll, but decided perhaps it was best to leave it where it lay for the time being. What harm could it possibly do?
Vanem carefully stepped around it and headed into the kitchen. He soon had a pot of water on his stove and set about preparing his cup as it heated.
Best Laid Plans (closed RP with Thunder)
Once again, Thunder felt a surge of surprise at Vanem’s response, although not simply because he seemed so eager to be of service.
It was true that contact with the natives of any given world was generally discouraged among those on the Conservation Team–but on the other foreclaw, neither was it outright forbidden. In fact, just about every member, from the professors who instructed raw recruits all the way up to the highest administrators and most senior working Conservators, acknowledged that such contact was at times unavoidable, and could in certain circumstances be a far more efficient use of time and resources than any other option. Granted, some would admit to this only when pressed, but a tacit understanding of the truth of it was present nonetheless. Indeed, when Thunder had been serving her apprenticeship, all but one of the experienced Conservators she had trained under had engaged a judicious bit of native help on certain portions of their shared assignments–and the lone holdout probably would have done so, had there been any natives around to enlist. From what the two of them had managed to ascertain, the civilization which had once existed on that particular world had already been in decline, and likely would have crumbled all on its own given enough time. The impact of a rogue comet, however, had brought on its true and sudden demise; the race itself had apparently died out altogether in the aftermath of the strike, and none of the planet’s other species had yet risen to sentience at the time of their investigations.
Still, even though it was called for–quietly–on a regular basis, native interaction could be very tricky to manage effectively. Conservators almost always chose their targets for contact with great care, observing them and their ways from afar to determine whether a particular individual was sufficiently trustworthy, and swearing him or her to secrecy even after revealing themselves and their purpose. But while most natives were agreeable to such restrictions, in Thunder’s experience they also didn’t tend to fully understand why secrecy was needed in the first place. Oh, they could grasp the idea that their fellows would be frightened of a large alien being like a Bookwyrm, right enough, and how real panic might ensue if the presence of such a being were to become widely known. But as far as actually comprehending how exposure would affect the Conservator’s mission, rather than the fate of their own race… well, that was much, much rarer. And once again, Thunder had to marvel for a moment at the depth of her luck; this situation could so easily have been disastrous, and yet it seemed that fate had sent her the best possible person to make an ally out of!
Vanem’s mention of his own foreign status in this world distracted her from that thought, however, and reminded her that she had not yet inquired about the details of just how he had gotten here and why. Before she could formulate a proper question, though, he had asked one of his own–and the substance of the query gave her pause. He had essentially given her permission not to answer if it conflicted with her aims, and there were a great many details she would have to skirt around if the subject were pursued. Yet she found herself too intrigued by the possibilities to remain silent.
“I have been fortunate to learn a great many things about this world in the short time I have been resident here,” she began after a long moment, trying to keep her voice smooth even as she chose each word with care. “Much more than could be listed or even summarized in just a few moments. However, I suspect your interest lies in some specific point, given the tone of your question.” The two of them had reached the edge of the central plaza by now, and she paused for just a moment, turning to look fully at the elder Wayfarer with another inquisitive head tilt. A sudden idea had struck her, and it was one which would explain a great deal of Vanem’s attitude and outlook, if true. “In fact–perhaps therein lies the heart of why you travelled to this world in the first place? Are you in search of knowledge which was not available in your own?”
Perhaps Vanem should have expected that they would come around to him and his reason for being in a world that was not of his birth. Despite the great similarities between this one and the one he still called home, it was still effectively a foreign land, and he had already openly admitted as such. As anxious as he was to know if Thunder had indeed come across knowledge that would assist him, he supposed it was logical for her to know exactly why, otherwise she likely would not be able to point out what he needed, assuming she would or could.
His Ancestor was not making it any easier for him. Kvailas had the annoying habit of going silent on him when the Ancestor thought Vanem was taking the wrong path, generally as a result of Vanem not doing what his Ancestor had suggested. Despite Kvailas’ accumulated wisdom over the many years, sometimes he seemed to act like a sullen child. Naturally Vanem kept such feelings to himself. It was indeed possible to keep things from one’s Ancestor; they were neither omniscient nor omnipresent in the Wayfarer’s mind.
Vanem could have beat around the bush a bit more and delayed a final admission, but he respected Thunder too much for that. Not to mention that she would likely see right through it.
“Would that my reason here be for such a noble purpose,” Vanem said. “I would have considered it an honor. But the truth of the matter is, I am bereft of the knowledge as to why I am here. I have arrived here by means of which I do not know.”
Vanem paused a moment.
“And you can likely guess that one who has been displaced from his home land in such a manner would indeed wish to seek a way back,” he said, and simply let the words hang in the air for a moment.

Best nods as Vanem makes his excuses and disappears into the house, getting more interested in scrubbing at his ink stains if they’re taking a break. He can reorganize his thoughts and clean himself at the same time. He thinks.
:>Okay! I see in bit!<: he echoes back, burrowing down an inch or so in the warm sand.
:>Oh wait!<: he says long after Vanem’s left, then scrambles over to the window to yell in at him. :>What if want —?<: Best catches himself, realizing Vanem’s already snoozing.
:>It okay,<: he whispers as best he can. :>I just keep watch over work while you sleep!<:
Soon enough, Best is also sleeping, because it turns out watching people sleep is boring!
As they nap, Daughter, who’s been hunting Best across desert and ruins, spots him leaning against Vanem’s house. Her parent had vanished hours and hours ago, and she’d begun to search for him shortly after sunrise. Usually Best isn’t gone that long, so she figured he must have gotten into trouble. When she finds him just sleeping instead of in danger, she invites herself inside the house to poke through all the detritus he’d left everywhere, curious about what he’s been up to.
Though the house might’ve been Best-proofed, it’s not Daughter-proof yet.
Vanem had been pretty tired from having effectively stayed up all night, thus he was not as easily roused from his slumber. Thus for awhile, Daughter had free run of the abode. When he finally did awaken, he was a bit bleary and confused, as if for a moment he did not remember how he came to be where he was.
“Oh, yes, quite right,” he finally said in a still sleepy voice. He rose to his feet, intent on getting himself a cup of tea to brace him a bit and get himself to wake up the rest of the way.
Vanem was a Wayfarer with a keen memory. He recalled exactly how his house was arranged. Even when Best had created a mess, he had dutifully and quickly remembered the pattern to the mess so he could get around it easily, even when in a half-asleep state such as he was in now. Thus he was not expecting the subtle rearrangement that come over the place due to Daughter’s explorations.
This was evident when his foot came down on a pile of parchments and slipped out from under him. At least the crash when his rear hit the floor had the effect of waking him up fully.
“Who are ...?!” Vanem started to say when his eyes fell on Daughter, until he remembered the incident with the chimney. “Oh, yes. Um ... hello.”
This was certainly an awkward moment, meeting a guest while sitting on the floor, but Vanem was not about to admit that.
