A method many alarm companies used to sell their systems door to door was scare tactics. They would imply that without their system in your home, your love ones would be in mortal peril. 

Another selling point was the ability to install the system yourself. 

These were closed systems without any monitoring. The way an emergency signal was relayed to the proper authorities was through an automatic dialer.
