Dear Mrs. Maneka Gandhi,
It is due to some unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances that I had been declared a Schizophrenic. I unfortunately did not have a privileged life that you had (Here I would like to assume that as you have assumed us unemployable due to the nature of our illness).
I , unlike many of my counterparts , am not that intelligent , but I am very well aware that before the illness struck I was smart enough to earn my own living – so smart that I was the envy of many. Abstract concepts and numbers were like nursery rhymes to me.
Yes, after the illness, things have changed but I have not grown richer that I stay unemployed and dependent on my parents. I personally don’t want reservation because I don’t think myself to be lesser than the so called mentally fit people, but I call it for those who are educated, had a bright future until the illness struck and a re struggling to make a living today.
Look around you Ms. Maneka Gandhi. I want to know how many of them around you in your political circles a re deemed fit for working inspite off being so called normal people. Their behavior and remarks on everyday lives and issues surpasses the understanding that we as insane people have of how a democratic government should work. Our integrity and honesty can be vouched for more than your so called “normal colleagues” for in our insane world we not deceive anyone nor are greedy for wealth.
You , hopefully have passed a general ignorant remark and have realized it , but personally you have rubbed salt on my already aching wounds inflicted by the unfairness of life.
We have a right to live and survive too… I had dreams to of making this country which has given me everything a better place for people like you and others, till the illness robbed the light out my eyes. And I know many others too graduating out of national institutes and the likes, with dreams for their country more than themselves but stopped abruptly because of their illness. YOU THINK WE CANT WORK AND THAT TO FOR OUR COUNTRY????? IT doesn’t matter anymore what you think for I and like me many more will continue to work more sincerely and diligently with whats left of our shredded dreams for a better , more compassionate and understanding INDIA.
Yours Sincerely,
Proud to have a” Beautiful mind “

Equals CPSJ finds the clarifications given by the Minister WCD on the GoM proceedings perplexing for several reasons, and once we get some time to breathe (because we are really #wearework-ing in the field right now) we will post them here. The outpouring of love, media coverage etc has been great but even better has been the excitement that keeps hitting our inbox - of people from pretty much everywhere with stories of mental illness and recovery and living in the community wanting to tell their stories. So even though the Hon'ble Minister has assured us that this was just a misquote we would like to thank whoever it was that misquoted her for inspiring this campaign in a way. :) We are keeping this alive and kicking so KEEP SENDING US YOUR STORIES. We need to ensure that its not just that #wecanwork, it's also that persons with mental illness, like all other persons with disabilities, can seek the removal of all the barriers that inhibit their participation in society on an equal basis with others. As a member of the GoM and having formerly held the post of Minister MSJE as was pointed out in the tweets posted above we hope that Mrs Gandhi will use this information to protect the rights of persons with disabilities in line with the CRPD. With love from Aruppukottai.

Min WCD has never commented that persons with mental illness cannot be given jobs in govt. It is clearly misinterpreted by PTI #mentalhealth via Plume http://bit.ly/GetPlume
