What was your gateway anime? Mine was Black Butler :)

Mine was Yu-Gi-Oh! During the usual Saturday morning cartoon runs, my parents said I watched the anime at around 4 years old and fell in love with it. I loved it so much that my 5th birthday was Yu-Gi-Oh themed!

It's still a series close to my heart that I adore more than anything. I still watch it every few years for the nostalgia.

Modern American Girl seems to fundamentally not understand that parents want their children to have educational toys, and that little kids think historical clothes are fun and fancy, and that these two things in combination are what allowed Pleasent Company to charge upwards of $100 for a single doll at a time when most dolls were still in the $10-$15 range

You're absolutely right. AG tries to tell us that "kids don't like to read anymore, they just want trendy toys and electronics" forgetting that this is also what people believed in 1986. AG is forgetting that not every kid in the world hates reading. Plenty of kids out there love to read and love to learn about history through books and toys. Those kids deserve to have something geared towards them. And maybe if AG would offer more historical toys to choose from, parents who stopped buying into the "kids hate books" propaganda will have a reason to steer their children's playtime towards educational toys and associated books. They'll be able to do that because those options exist!!!
