Some really dense New Age types will assure you that they don’t “believe in mental illness.” Meaning they think people who experience symptoms of such are just “awakening” or some bullshit like that.

The thing is, if you’re around them, off your meds, showing actual symptoms of a mental illness? Symptoms that are distressing and don’t live up to the lofty expectations of the New Age movement?

They pivot really quickly from “mental illness isn’t real, it just means you’re super-magical” to “eww you’re batshit, go away.”

I’m not saying progress hasn’t been made in destigmatizing mental illness, but with the New Age crowd in particular, they seem to love their own romanticized idea of mental illness, but have no compassion or even patience for someone showing actual symptoms.

Echoing what’s said above and adding that even if they acknowledge that mental illness is real, they see it as a personal failing, a spiritual failing, and “bad vibes” that will bring them down.

There is so much spiritual bypassing that leaves mentally ill and disabled people outcast simply because they dare to be visibly disabled or ask to be treated as the multidimensional people they are

Sleepy Herbs in Witchcraft

Shh, it's sleepy time. Here are some herbs that can help you rest better.

Anise: Put anise in your pillow to protect you from disturbing dreams

Catnip: Keep above your bed to protect you while you sleep.

Celery Seed: Use in a sleep pillow to help you fall asleep faster.

Chamomile: Drinking it as a tea reduces stress and helps you sleep faster, and sounder.

Dandelion Root: Use in a sleep pillow to protect you while you sleep.

Lavender: Drink in a tea, use in a bath, keep in a sleep pillow, or keep in your room to help you gain a restorative, calm sleep. Also protects against nightmares.

Lettuce: Yes, really. Eat lettuce to promote sleep.

Poppy Seeds: Eating poppy seeds or using them in a sleep pillow may provide some relief from insomnia.

Spearmint: Drink spearmint tea to induce lovely, restorative dreams.

Thyme: Use in sleep pillows to block nightmares.

Valerian: Pit in a sleep pillow for restful sleep.

Quick Tips For Green Witches

talk to your plants. it may feel silly at first, but even just saying something nice every day has been proven to have a positive impact on both you and your plants. i also advise telling them why you're doing things like transplants to help them adjust to the shock.

if you can, prioritize working with plants native to your area. this is makes them easier to find, easier to grow, and it's much better for the environment.

look into companion plants! for example, basil is commonly used in both witchcraft and cooking and it's a great companion plant to tomatoes, which are always handy to have. tomato sauce as a protection spell, anyone?

do research on plant varieties. even the most seasoned tend to overlook this. different varieties of the same plant can have wildly different needs and you may be accidentally neglecting a variety much better suited to your area and your uses.

take a look at your local nurseries before jumping to shop for seeds or supplies online.

Witchcraft doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s writing a symbol on your sandwich with honey, or painting your nails a specific color to deflect negativity. Try these low key witchcraft ideas to add a little magical energy to your day-to-day.

Use music lyrics to invoke a certain feeling or vibe before you have to do something. (Confidence to take a test for instance)

Stir your tea or soups clockwise to add an increase of abundance of whatever you want. 

Paint your nails black to absorb negativity. (or wear black clothes)

Draw symbols (runes or sigils for people who do that) on your foggy mirror after a bath or shower for protection. 

Enchant your morning cup of coffee to what your intentions are for the day and drink up. 

Use your shower to wash away negativity from the night before. 

Practice visualization and see what you want to happen in your life in your mind. 

Sprinkle salt over your entrance for protection. (bonus if it’s black salt)

Enchant your mirrors by cleaning them and saying out loud that they will only reflect positivity. 

Look up your dream meanings. 

Make a pendulum with a necklace and a key. Ask yes/no questions. 

Collect witch supplies on walks. (Sticks, leaves, rocks, flowers…dead things)

Charge your witchcraft items with your intents. 

Say prayers to your ancestors. Or leave them out offerings of food or whatever they liked when they were alive. 

Practice your kitchen witch skills and make a hardy soup for abundance for the year ahead. Or a cake for prosperity and wealth. 

Use a random deck of  cards laying around the house for divination. (Clubs - Wands / Diamonds - Coins / Hearts - Cups / Spades - Swords)

Wear blue if you’re taking a test or going on a job interview to invoke calmness. 

Wear pink makeup to invoke self love. 

Enchant your jewelry to have specific meanings to you. A necklace for protection, a ring for clarity, a bracelet for confidence. 

Sweep your room or living space. All the corners and sweep everything right out the door for an easy old-fashioned cleanse. If you have carpet just sweep the ‘energy’ metaphorically and open the door boot out the energy.

as a 'baby witch', it's hard to figure out what's truly meant for beginners, and what's meant for more advanced practitioners. so, i've compiled a list of my favorite beginner witch books!

Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler

A fantastic (yet dense) book on overall witch history, historical figures in witchcraft, and the different "branches" of witchcraft that has developed over the years.

Elemental Witchcraft by Michelle Heron

While this book is meant to be Heron's own teachings about the "pentacle path" (and I'm not a huge fan of Heron's writings/musings), there is amazing information in this book about the foundations of witchcraft like hermetic philosophy and witch history. If you pick up this book, just make sure to take everything with a grain of salt.

Queer Magic edited by Lee Harrington and Tai Fenix Kulystin

If you follow me, you're probably a queer witch - and this book is essential. It's a collection of essays and musings, all by witches from different backgrounds, orientation, and practices. It's a fantastic read that I highly recommend to anyone that wants to be more inclusive with their practice - especially those who plan on building their own witchy communities.

Grovedaughter Witchery by Bree NicGarran (AKA @breelandwalker, right here on Tumblr!)

I couldn't make this list without including this incredible spell book. I know beginner witches are eager to get their hands dirty, and this book is perfect for that - tons of simple spells, rituals, and crafts for any witch. (And, tons of sass from Mama Bree herself!) I highly recommend picking up this book if you're interested in getting started in spell work, and if you're new to learning about correspondences.

The Magical Household by Scott Cunningham & David Harrington

Now... I'm not a huge fan of Scott Cunningham. He has a lot published, and most of his books are just regurgitations of other books he's written - but I really enjoyed this one. If you're a household witch, or you're interested in household magic, this is a great book to have on hand. It contains tons of rituals for the home (folklore included!), magical recipes, and tons more.

A low key witchy trick you can do is enchant your nail polish for manifestation spells! You can choose your favorite nail color or use different colors to correspond to your intentions! *Take this as a grain of salt. This is based on my own practice as a enjoy incorperating artsy things into my craft.*

●Red or Pink: To attract love or encourage confidence/self love. You can use this as a power stimulant or the releasing of anger. Good representation of fire.

●Yellow and Orange: Creative thinking or to spark inspiration. You can also use these colors to create happiness and fun. Good respresentation for air.

●Greens: You can use this color to represent growth, financial stability or to manifest wealth. Can also be good for representing earth.

●Blues: A good color for helping with emotions or the releasing of said emotions. You can use this as a calming color for anxiety and encouarage mindfulness. Good for representing water.

●Purple: This is a highly intuitive color. You can use this for the enchantment of a clairvoyance boost or paint your nails this color as a way if meditating by simply concentrating on the painting. Or you can use this color for spiritual awareness or intuition

Black, Grey and Brown: You can use these colors for illusion, in the sense of not wanting to be seen or dont like attention drawn to yourself. Can also be used to neutralize high energy levels, grounding or banishing negative energies.

🛁 light your candle anywhere you can place it safely in the bathroom, aim for somewhere you can see it’s light nicely from inside the shower but if you can’t that’s ok no worries ofc!! take a dab of honey and place it onto your forehead. i usually just put it on my finger(s) and press in some intention for a moment, sometimes i’ll press some across my cheeks too <3 rinse off your hand but leave the honey on your forehead and anywhere else you put it to rinse off in the shower! if you’re using one, get your rose quartz and hover it above your honey covered area(s) for a moment and take a few breaths, then go ahead and shower with your rose quartz in sight or just near the tub! blow out your candle when you’ve finished up your night routine <3

Low Effort Magic 🌙

I have a hard time doing something that involves magic every day, even though I've been on this path for quite some time.

Practicing magic a lot is by no means mandatory but it does help (in my opinion) to get better at it and it just helps with everyday problems. So here are some low effort activities you can do everyday that will hopefully help those of you with similar problems!

Write words like "protection", "healing" or whatever you want into your drink with a straw or spoon before you drink it. Or draw sigils in it.

If you feel super exhausted for no apparent reason, open a window and scream or, if you like it, put on some angry punk or metal music to banish whatever is feeding on your energy. While you're doing that, keep in mind that you want to banish. Otherwise you're just playing angry music. Yelling "Fuck off" also does the trick.

When you eat or drink something, try to pinpoint at least one magical property of each ingredient in your drink/food. It can also be one that has no historical evidence but is personal to you. That will help keep you in the magic mindset and also helps you to get all if that info into your long-term memory.

Open the window, stand in front of it and breathe in the air deeply with your eyes closed while you remind yourself that tge wind is part of nature and that you're connected to it. It doesn't have to be a half hour meditation, 5 seconds get the job done as well.

Offer everyday activities to your deities. For example: cooking for Hestia, standing up for yourself for Loki, practicing magic or **self care time** for Freyja, disposing of trash the correct way to your local nature spirits, etc

Take a shower or a bath, or just wash your face or brush your teeth with the intent of cleansing yourself from all that negative energy that has built up over the day.

you will need :

a candle (white, red, or pink)

rose quartz

rose petals

a way to light your candle

a mirror

a representation of you

- cleanse and prepare all your tools

- set your intentions and repeat them in your head throughout the whole spell

- get your mirror

- put a ring of salt around your mirror or set protections up

- this is your spell space

- repeat your affirmations/what you want to happen in your head

- Repeat your affirmations into the mirror for a while/meditate (same affirmations as prev spell or whatever you wish!)

- put your representation of you on top of the mirror

- put your candle on top of the mirror
