Thinking about jmart size difference rn because Jon’s been described as “grubby” and “scrawny” and Martin is explicitly stated to be a big guy. I imagine Martin as this like, fat 6’2 guy who could solo a smaller professional wrestler and tries to make his kind helpful soft boy personality his defining trait so that he doesn’t terrify everyone he meets (lighthouse vibes fr fr), and then Jon is this 5’6 mouse of a man (that’s short for europeans right) with an eating disorder (I mean Come On. That man has 1000% missed meals because he was working before) and I would think in like s1 he would sort of puff himself up to seem more imposing and respectable, but as the series goes on he curls in on himself more and more.

Hold up. I feel some fluff coming on. Martin holding Jon as if he’ll break. As if he’s fragile. As if he’s the most precious thing in the world, which he is. Jon feeling safe with this tower of a man wrapping his arms around him and holding him with such reverence that he feels like he doesn’t deserve. Idk man I just like these two

The tragedy that Martin and Jon each experienced the Web and then built their relationship on their polar opposit reactions is something we don't dunk on often enough

Martin: our compatability is something that could only happen circumstantially, if external forces not just allowed it, but actively willed it. We only fit together because trauma butchered our lives at the same time, in the same snarled angles, carving our personhoods into grotesquely fitted puzzle pieces.

Jon, putting out his cigarette on a passing spider: i feel my feelings at maximum volume all the time, and "external forces" is welcome to bring a plus one to our wedding. When are you going to feel the rain on your skin, Martin. Fucking when.

kinda going so crazy over this because. Martin thinking that the shared trauma brought them together is a very rational way of thinking, okay, it's not entirely self-deprecating. Trauma can be a bond between people, but to completely dismiss their emotions like that, so wholeheartedly, is just wrong. ITS WRONG! I am of the same belief as Jon that the shared trauma helped, sure, they bonded over experiencing things that no human ever should, but at the core of it all, they love each other for their humanity, not because the situation forced them into each other's arms. I do think that if they were normal average blokes at a stupid archival job, they would've liked each other. Jon would be just as stoic and unknowingly rude and fed up with "stupid people who waste my time", and Martin would be kind and bitchy on the inside and fed up with "stupid people who refuse to take a break every once in a while". In their actual universe, the concept of free will is so daunting and it may not even exist and Martin thinks it doesn't, but you can try as hard as you want to fit a square peg into a round hole in a heart and it won't work. So, clearly, they fit and they were going to fit and it's not because they're lonely, it's because of the core of what and who they are, what they meant to each other.

External forces will RSVP no to the wedding, politely. They played an insignificant part in that relationship.
