For the last year and a half my landlord has been trying to sell the house where I live. He got close around February but the deal fell through, and now it seems he's decided it'll be easier to sell the house he currently lives in and move his family into this one. And I have until the end of June to find a new place to live.
Meanwhile, I only have a part time job. I've been trying to pick up as much freelance work as possible but that well has been pretty dry for a while, and full-time opportunities have been... well, you all know what the job market looks like right now. Even minimum wage service jobs would rather just put pretend to be hiring but stay permanently understaffed.
So my financial situation while looking for a new place is dire, to say the least. Also I don't have a car, and haven't even had a license since the early 2000s, so moving is going to involve paying someone to haul a bunch of stuff around. Or else taking ten thousand bus trips to my storage unit on the other side of town, and living out of a suitcase at the new place.
Anyway, any help would mean the world to me, whether it's a donation, sharing the link, or just sending good vibes out into the universe on my behalf. Thanks for reading.

I can't give enough thanks to everyone who's helped so far, but the situation is still a mess. I'm in the process of moving all my stuff into storage (still an enormous hassle with no car and no license), and finding a place where can get approved for rental in the first place with my part-time employment situation. And then if I'm able to wrangle that, I've got to afford first/last month's rent plus security deposit without literally bankrupting myself.
If I'm not able to wrangle local lodgings, then the money becomes my "finally get out of Utah" fund. I've got friends elsewhere who could host me on a couch until I find something full-time and local, and presumably from there my situation would stabilize enough to make acquiring permanent lodgings less of a fucking ordeal. Presumably.
Status update - I found a room for rent listing that looks pretty close to ideal for me, in terms of cost, location, and description of the housemates. I'm waiting for a response, nothing's set in stone yet, but this would be a game changer if it goes through.
Money situation is still trash though. I can cover first/last month and security deposit now, but moving and storage expenses are the killer. Everything would be so much easier if I had a car, but I haven't had a driver's license in a long enough time that if I like... tripled the dose of my anxiety meds and tried to get one now, it would probably ping a federal database going "this long-time pedestrian is up to something fishy! Better have fifty cops pistol-whip him in the parking lot!"
Ok, maybe I should talk to someone about upping my anxiety med dosage regardless of the driver's license situation...

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

People, my wonderful transfem friend is taking students for her class. Do your thing and help her find students. The relative value of a dollar and a rupee means that just ten international students can help her make rent.
Hey folks, Swarnim's an old friend and a talented engineer. As Aruvi said, a dollar goes a longer way in India, and India's current regime is exceedingly unkind to trans women trying to find gainful employment, or even just live their lives. Please help a trans woman from the third world support herself!
we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent

Could you imagine making your own movie, making like 20 million dollars, and then going âawesome, now to install a DVD duplicating machine in my house and personally burn copies by hand like a medieval monk preserving sacred textsâ
Like I need people to understand the mental image here of a multimillionaire internet creator personally overseeing DVD production in his own house like heâs running an underground bootleg operation out of a basement in 2007.
Itâs weirdly charming because thereâs something very âold internetâ about it, this energy of âI made a thing, and now I will physically hand it to people myself like an artisan at a craft fair.â
The man really said: âThe future of cinema is me standing next to a humming disc burner at 2amâ
And like... I can't help but believe he's onto something

I don't like to present problems without solutions, and I don't like to risk appearing to have an expertise I don't feel I have, and so I haven't really spoken about this. Also not a huge fan of scaring the shit out of people. But people do need to be warned that, despite ~$4 gas depending on where you live, the consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have barely begun hitting us. Due to a variety of complex geopolitical and purely practical reasons, even if the war ended and the strait was totally clear tomorrow (a thing which will not, and thanks to mines and insurance concerns cannot, happen), the worst of the economic, food, and shipping disruptions would still be ahead of us.
Bad times are coming. They're already here for some nations, but as usual the US's actions punish others before they hit the US. Nobody knows exactly how bad or how it will play out, because nothing on this scale has ever happened before.
My personal advice, such as it is, is twofold:
One, please start educating yourself on the subject so you can draw your own conclusions (creators like Mr Global are a good start, but simply looking at news from outside the US will show you more than you're seeing currently).
Two, if you have any discretionary spending-- and I know a lot of Tumblr is already struggling financially--then do everything you can to live further below your means. Partly because I think we're all about to functionally be poorer, and partly to allow you to buy some things as a slight hedge against the future. Whatever you use that keeps for a long time, but gets used up. Maybe that's beans and rice. Maybe it's craft supplies if you sell your work. Maybe that's filling up the propane tank for your grill. Think about it.
I'm really sorry. This post feels very inadequate. But I didn't want people to be blindsided just because the US media is suppressing talk about how much Trump's Iran war has really fucked us all.
Adding @zooarchaeologyatdinner's tags:
#hey Canadians I'm sorry but this goes for us too #Red's tips are good - here's my addition: #if you don't know any of your neighbours now is the time to get on speaking terms with at least one#stop putting it off and go join that local community group. I don't care if it's a walking group/invasive plant removal/food security #or the local knitting circle at your library. attend by zoom if you have to. #you need to know some of the people who live near you. and they need to know you.
I saw someone make a really good point on this last night--whatever happens for the rest of this year, it is now inevitable that prices will go up. A lot. Specifically, food prices will go up. Things may still be generally available, at least most of the time, but far more expensive. So anything you can buy now that you would buy in the future, but which will store for a long time, straight up saves you money to buy now. If that helps you think about it, it's basically a nonperishables savings account. A small but real hedge against both scarcity and greedflation.
Some things you might want to buy:
White rice lasts for over a decade. If you eat rice, there is absolutely no reason not to buy extra. Store it in a sealed container.
Pet food. Dry food can last up to a year stored properly, canned food multiple years. If you buy much dry cat food, though, you do need to give some consideration to possible pest problems.
Cleaning products like dish soap and laundry detergent last indefinitely. No reason not to buy some extra.
You eat ramen sometimes? Cheap and shelf stable.
Eat cereal with milk for breakfast? Get some shelf stable milk in tetra paks, or get some powdered milk--but buy a small quantity, make it up, and see if you find it palatable. You might only want to use it for baking if you don't think the flavor is an adequate substitute.
This one costs way more money, but if you have it, this is your excuse to buy that big container of local honey or maple syrup.
So tired of the American culture around oral hygiene. You see it most in toothpaste or other similar dental products commercials. It's not "buy our toothpaste because it prevents painful infections", it's "be dentist ready" and ads showing people doing the "tissue test" to see how white their teeth are, as if the only reason you should practice good oral hygiene is because you're worried about the approval of others.
It's just...so harmful.
Oral hygiene is important, not because your teeth have to be perfectly white or because your dentist will judge you (they most likely won't), but because your mouth is part of your body and your health is important. The state of your mouth can impact the rest of your body, oral infections can become life-threating or impact your ability to properly eat or speak without pain. That's why you should care about oral hygiene- because it's your body and you deserve to live with as minimal pain and discomfort as possible- not because of some shallow beauty ideals.
I'm just so tired of the mainstream message of oral hygiene as being purely aesthetic. It's not. It's healthcare.
When I was in the hospital, they gave me a big bracelet that said ALLERGY, but like. I'm allergic to bees. Were they going to prescribe me bees in there.
So there's a medication called hyaluronidase. It's used to make other medications absorb better, because it makes the cell wall more permeable.
One common usage is to make local anesthetic more effective during surgery, for instance. It's used in a number of injected medications.
Bee stings contain an enzyme very similar to this medication, so sometimes, people with bee allergies have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase.
This is called cross-reactivity, where your body mistakes something for the thing it's actually allergic to, and has an allergic reaction anyway. For instance, sometimes people with latex allergies also are allergic to bananas and other fruits. They don't actually contain latex, but there are some similar proteins.
Apparently, hyraluronidase used in humans is derived from one of four sources: sheep testicles, cow testicles, cow testicles again, and GMO hamster ovaries.
tl;dr: They won't inject you with bees, but they might inject you with purified cow testicle juice, and your body might say 'eh, cow balls are BASICALLY bees' and try to kill you anyway.
The world is full of such beauty and wonder. Thank you for that sentence.

me hanging out with black people in the summer:Â âaye, yall donât forget to put on sunscreenâ
them:Â
@flipflibberinflippinghell
Use the Walgreens Brand which is pretty cheap and it does wonders and doesnât leave me with a white cast. And Iâm dark as hell so I hate looking ashy but not all sunscreens are made equally and itâs one of the better ones Iâve used.
Wait cocoa/shea butter and coconut oil donât protect you from the sun we really do need sunscreen??
Yea fam. All that âwe donât need sunscreenâ shit is a myth. Combine that with the fact that most dermatologists donât know how to spot skin cancer in Black people and itâs a nasty combination.
Yeah, itâs harder for us to get it but when we do itâs deadly. I know two people who died of skin cancer, both were Black.
âWhile incidence of melanoma is higher in the Caucasian population, a July 2016 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed it is more deadly in people of color. African American patients were most likely to be diagnosed with melanoma in its later stages than any other group in the study, and they also had the worst prognosis and the lowest overall survival rate.â

Sorry about the link, Iâm on mobile. But this is from August 2016, which I know isnât the most recent but itâs still SUPER IMPORTANT. Yâall please wear sunscreen. With Google itâs even easy to find smaller, Black-owned brands.
https://blackgirlsunscreen.com/ is Black-owned!
Iâm gonna second the rec for Black Girl Sunscreen, itâs affordable, Black owned, and immediately melts into the skin without leaving any gross white cast.
