I made a mistake not long ago
My friend told me she wanted to go
I didn’t believe her, and I laughed at her joke
She smiled like she was fine, but her heart broke
She had had enough, and she finally snapped
To take away the pain, the hurt, she was trapped
She got the pills, and swallowed each one
Didn’t say goodbye, she was just done
The next morning she woke up feeling worse than the last
But she needed out, she needed out fast
She went to church, and I could finally see
All the jokes, the smiles, they were just a screen
I took her under the stairs, and asked for the truth
She started to sob, and showed me the proof
Scars on her arms, years of pain
She told me she couldn’t go the go through a day again
She had taken the pills, she had tried to get away
But it hadn’t been enough, she was still here today
I told her I loved her, and didn’t want her to die
She laughed darkly, and could no longer cry
“You’ve told me different, every single day
Told me that I had no reason to stay
You kept saying the world would be better if I was gone
And I started believing that you weren’t wrong”
I pulled her into a hug, and apologised time and time again
I said I didn’t know I had been a bad friend
I had thought all those times they were just jokes, for fun
I didn’t know she thought the world needed her gone
I took her aside, and we skipped the prayer
So we told our own, in that place under the stairs
“God, please help the ones who need you
The ones who feel like they can’t see you
Help them know that there are those who care
That there are people who will always be there
Because no one is alone, not truly at least
Everyone has someone to help them fight the beast
The depression, the hurt, the anger at the world
No one’s alone, there’s someone out there, concerned
Concerned that one day they’ll wake up, and their friend will be gone
The friend who they love, who they cherish from dawn to dawn
Because no ones alone in this great big earth
You just have to know where to find that self worth.”
She turned to me, and for the first time in a while
I could see in her eyes, that real, joyful smile
“Thank you for being the friend I need”
I smiled back. It was no large deed
All I did was help her see
That her true worth didn’t lay with me
Her true worth came in the kindness she showed
It was displayed in the love she overflowed
The joy she gave others, even at her worst
The laughter she spread, the smiles she dispersed
I just showed her that it didn’t matter what I said
The world wold never be better off with her dead
Because she truly was unique, special, one of a kind
And her self worth was how she saw herself in her own mind
No matter who tells you “you’ll never be more,”
You get back up and say, “no, I’m going to soar.”
