âTomboyâ
I used to call myself a tomboy because I dressed âlike a boyâ and played with the boys at recess, even though Iâm a girl. Iâd wear a pair of my brotherâs old, loose and baggy basketball shorts that drooped below the knee, never fitted shirts like most girls my age. I acted liked a stereotypical boy, and I was perfectly happy about that until I began to see myself the way others saw me.
I was in 4th grade when I first began to see the âproblemâ with acting as if I were a boy. I was playing chess against a boy, and his friend was playing the game next to us. The game was long and frustrating, as my opponent was rude and insensitive. Toward the end though, his friend asked me the question: âSo are you a boy or a girl?â Iâd been asked similar questions by multiple people, but for some reason this time it bothered me more. My opponent took that opportunity to latch onto the conversation, laughing, âyeah haha âcause I just canât tellââas if it were a bad thing, as if the fact that I didnât let societyâs take on my gender define ways to express myself were something to be ashamed of.
People didnât seem to understand that I didnât want to be a boy, and the truth was that I loved being a girl. At that point in my life, I simply enjoyed doing things some boys did and dressing the way many boys dressed, but neither of those aspects made me a boy, and the fact that I refused to subject myself to the stereotypes that surrounded being a girl didnât either.
Why do girls need to wear shorter shorts and tighter pants to make people believe that theyâre girls? Why do they need to stay away from the football field and not get dirty or else be scorned? Who defines what types of frivolous things differ boys and girls? But society says that there is a difference beyond biology. Gender states that a girl must act one way while a boy acts another.
I no longer use the term tomboy anymore because it refers to a difference between boys and girls that shouldnât exist. It classifies a type of girl for doing something âdifferentâ when really, weâre all people.
And if I could go back in time to relive the moment with the boy playing chess, I wouldnât respond that I was a girl; Iâd say that Iâm humanâbecause thatâs what counts.

YOU MUST CHECK OUT our latest article, "'Tomboy'," by Katie Jain Jain POWERFULLY shares her perspective on the DESTRUCTIVE nature of GENDER stereotypes: "Why do girls need to wear shorter shorts and tighter pants to make people believe that they're girls? Heres a fun new crazy idea
A cis boy can be feminine and still be a boy.
A trans boy can be feminine and still be a boy.
A cis girl can be masculine and still be a girl.Â
A trans girl can be masculine and still be a girl.
TL;DR: If someone is comfortable with how they look despite it opposing the stereotype of the gender they identify as, let them be and donât tell them otherwise.

Ken Young's perspective is REFRESHING and MUST BE HEARD: "So here I come to the conclusion that no matter what happened to the presidential election, as long as we are open-minded and are willing to accept other peopleâs differences (as my friend and I have with our respective religions), we will always have each otherâs back and the next four years is our chance to show that. All I hope for our future is that we donât let religions, appearances, or other factors that make YOU a human with rights bring so much hatred that we donât want. We live to love -- not to hate." How I feel when I see someone telling another to pack their bags and leave the country:
This is probably the only political post Iâm going to make on my Tumblr - itâs been about 24 hours since the president of the United States was announced. I donât know if thereâs anything I can say that hasnât already been said at this point, so instead of focusing on what has happened, I want to keep my sights set on what can happen and how I can contribute to that brighter future. Friends, take as much time as you need to experience the emotions youâre feeling right now and donât hesitate to ask others for help or healing. No matter what happens, though, I want to continue making empathy, compassion, and love the center of my work and life regardless of what happens around me. Letâs move forward together.Â
