really liked the backrooms movie right up until the racism
I want to be extremely clear I am not at all upset about the casting decision or about Clark being a flawed character making harmful decisions, or anything of that nature. he was an interesting character, and Chiwetel Ejiofor did an excellent job. I am specifically upset about One Scene toward the end, which felt like a thoughtless directing decision and a (hopefully unintentional) perpetuation of a quite nasty stereotype that's been embedded in the US' racist milieu for centuries.
they did not need to give that version of Clark bulging eyes, making him look uncomfortably like a racist caricature. and they did not need to make him overpower Mary in such a full-body way that uncomfortably resembled sexual assault. they could have done his makeup differently. they could have directed that scene in a different way.
Fear of Big Scary Black Man Brutalizing White Woman has been used to justify unspeakable violence against black men since the 1800s. seeing this scene presented as it was, uncritically, thoughtlessly, put a strange damper on what was otherwise a very interesting and unique film. this trope needs to fall by the wayside.
prev tags u are not remotely overreacting especially when the actor they put in that minstrel style sfx makeup was a whole entire white man

i’m tired of babying grown women who let beauty standards control their entire life. stand up, grow up & get over yourself. enough. you aren’t perpetual victims. exercise the autonomy you refuse to acknowledge you have. you can choose to stop this circus anytime. grown ass fucking women acting like helpless victims to the patriarchy and then in the next breath going “COME WITH ME TO MY BOTOX APPOINTMENT😃” you are traitors and we will never make it out of the patriarchy if personal responsibility can’t be taken

um actually there's nothing wrong with letting cats be outdoor pets. your cat is depressed locked inside forever. it's animal abuse. let it outside. more cats should be let outside more often. especially overnight.
(smoking a cigarette) the average american is afraid of what is new and what is foreign, and especially of what is adult. they are trapped forever in daycares of their own design, reading books and watching shows made for children. And while there are interesting things made for children, by and large, they tend to stick to inoffensive, intensely juvenile things that won't challenge them much. And worst of all, if you suggest to your Average American that they should try to step outside of their narrow box, especially if they're trying to become artists, animators, film makers, novelists, etc, everyone acts as if you've just bombed the daycare. Wow.
gameoverse seems fun enough. but the cynical feminist in me can't help herself. all the male characters are like, cartoon blobs, which is contrasted strongly by the two major female characters in this pilot, both of whom are hour-glass shaped humanoid women who spend most of their screentime in swimsuits. and like that's not an outright dealbreaker but i *am* staring into the camera with my eyebrows raised.
idk i'm getting really tired of this "connecticut clark and malfina" type shit where male characters get to be Silly Abstract Little Guys but women have to be women shaped. it's this male-as-default thing that i hate where you don't need to add anything to a character design to imply male-ness but the woman better have wide hips and booba or else yknow like idk it's not outright Offensive but it is tiring
how it feels seeing a woman depicted in any media
