Please tell us about the nuances of Tricki Woo versions...
One difference is how the breed standards have changed since the 1930/40s. A period-appropriate Tricki would be a little leggier, have a less squished muzzle + larger & lower nose, and his coat would be shorter with an overall different silhouette. (There are still shorter coated pekes today, but the super long-haired version is what we see more of these days.)
Brachycephalic (short-faced) dogs have gotten progressively more exaggerated over the decades, so this phenomenon is not unique to the peke. (It's also a big problem with the squishy faced cat breeds - look up a classic Persian sometime.)
There's lots of little details in the books the 2020 show didn't translate. Tricki has far, far more toys and stuff, including little coats. And while him being sedentary is a big plot/character point in both the book and TV show, the book has some scenes of activity that didn't make the cut -- Tricki has a ringtoss game he loves, and in his weightloss story, he is shown tearing around Skeldale House with the other dogs.
But since the TV show has a long running plot line of Tricki aging, we're probably going to continue to see him just loafing around. I just wish we saw him more energetic and social. (We did at least get the cricket episode where Tricki runs off to the neighboring farm's dog, plus the implication he loves to chase chickens.)
One positive change, though -- the TV show omits the groundskeeper that absolutely hated Tricki (he never hurt the dog, but laughed cruelly when Tricki's obesity gave him health problems).
