Thinking about the What's a Hameln/Imaginary Friends AU and we were talking about it (cause it's our au duh)

And @cctypical mentioned- hold on

There are heavy themes of like masking for society in this au and who it's safe to be yourselves around.

Yes in this au Hameln never existed and Rebecca has a "normal" life...

But that's the thing, I like imagining her life being normal in ways both good and bad. She lives in our world and deals with other world problems she would've dealt with if not in the tapes.

Rebecca and Wooly/Winnie always are putting on a performance based on the expectations of their environment. A performance of necessity to "survive" with little incident.

Rebecca is seen as and expected to play the role in public as this happy little ray of sunshine, only really showing her more complex self around her friends and family. She navigates how society treats her and tries to act in a way that makes her feel like she will be safe. Like fuck there was this scene in a roleplay session where she had to talk down an angry racist old man in the grocery store and it perfectly showed that switch she does around strangers especially if they make her feel uncomfortable or unsafe :) it's not just a silly "so people will like her" kind of thing it's mostly so she doesn't draw unwanted kinds of attention to herself

When Wooly becomes human (thus the name change) he... gets this concept a bit from watching her all this time but genuinely feels annoyed and discouraged that being human now doesn't just mean new friends and adventures. It means boring and sometimes unpleasant stuff too

i was literally talking about them and avoiding specific phrases like “they haven’t gone through trauma- well, H*MELN trauma” and realised that was it. even if they have a “normal” life they DO go through basic societal trauma that like EVERYONE goes through.

instead of being an allegory for the entertainment industry it’s just an allegory for life as a whole. rebs has to put up an act in order to have safe spaces to be herself and winnie has to LEARN how to put up an act in order to get the most out of being human. and if they don’t they’ll be punished (societal stereotyping)

thinking of those mood boards I saw where people were comparing black singers and celebs to cute sanrio characters or cute little animals and I think I almost broke down and cried because I NEVER see black individuals get treated with such gentleness from people especially non black people.

people expect us to be toughed out and masculine all the time but the idea of inverting those stereotypes and woobifying us lovingly makes me really emotional. it's a gentle kindness I never thought I'd see before.

For context in this AU Wooly was Rebs' childhood imaginary friend who didn't disappear as she got older and instead because of her powers gained sentience... so Rebecca is a teenager stuck with this childlike imaginary friend who never grew up who, is basically like a little kid who always wants to play and go on adventures but Rebecca is again, a teenager now. She grew out of that. AND IDK SOME SHIT HAPPENS AND HE ENDS UP BECOMING HUMAN LATER BUT I HAVEN'T SKETCHED THEIR DYNAMIC BEFORE THAT IN A VERY LONG WHILE AND ITS SO FUNNY AND I LOVE THEM. They're Amanda and Wooly but like in a what if universe imagining how they would interact if their circumstances were entirely different :P He was definitely better at being there for her and getting along with her when they were BOTH kids but he doesn't really fundamentally understand her current life problems so even if he tries to make her feel better its in the most unhelpfully childishly naive way. College? WTF is that? Grades? Who cares. They aren't THAT big of a deal why are you so stressed and upset let's PLAY. He's trying his best it's just he doesn't get it. :| and just basically being like an annoying little sibling.

One of my favorite things about Rebecca Colton in this au (she's a teenager who never had Hameln ruin her life) is how she's an artist like yes yes ofc but like she takes broken things and turn them into art, she'll rip apart her pictures and paintings and collage them into something new. And never once when she does that is she not scared of fucking it up forever... but if she locks herself to much in perfection her art turns dull. Broken things can still be beautiful and all that. She'll make them beautiful she'll make them into something new so that they won't be considered something broken anymore : P

meet rebecca and marcus orion!!! yeah yeah rbh hasn’t started either but im cooking i swear. anyway this is them if ONCE AGAIN H*meln never fucking existed (good). a little bit of rbh lore as a treat implied here if you get it. marcus is 15-16 and rebecca is a little younger but actually moved up into his year cuz she too smart for these people. idk we haven’t worked that out yet. they’re both teens

rebecca isn’t sams daughter here because there’s ALREADY a version of her that is in the same universe so they would lowkey start asking too many fucking questions if they were both rebecca and their dads were both sam. and since marcus was raised WITHIN H*meln we had to come up with completely new lore for them

long story short they are half siblings due to their parents having complicated relationships resulting in both of them. marcus is taken into custody by his grandparents and rebecca later follows. we made an entire system of how this happened specifically but im tryna keep it brief rn so. i named them orion because rebecca is star themed and has an interest in constellations in rbh canon. and the constellation itself has two RED AND BLUE supergiants (SYMBOLISM!!!)

the catch is their parents are strict and controlling as FUCK. so they’ve both still got something affecting their lives and freedom kinda. marcus likes to suck up to his parents and overwork himself to be everything they want him to and impress them while rebecca does whatever the fuck she wants to spite them. they all genuinely love each other tho it’s just a very strained household

they become friends with rebs first and become friends with the other au kids later. and then winnie shows up and that’s a WHOOLE nother thing. to my best memory they are the first to find out about the whole imaginary friend thing and try to help winnie adjust to being human as he’ll start going to school with rebs. marc teaches him to be “normal” and fit societal standards (AUTISM SHAMING) and becca teaches him how to live a little probably i forgot. there’s also something kinda cool that i CANNOT say cuz rbh lore unfortunately damn

what else can i say bout themmm they have a pretty healthy relationship this time around but ofc have conflict cuz they’re basically polar opposites. marc pressurises himself out of fear of rejection from his parents and mirrors their behaviour onto becca which she is TIRED of. she likes to be independent and prove how much she can enjoy herself without her parents breathing down her fucking neck. she tries to help marc get more into his comfort zone and overwork himself less which he tries to reject but usually falls for her persuasion anyway

marc dresses as casual as he thinks is accceptable or normal looking because he refuses to express himself or find his own style cuz he knows DAMN well it would be weird to “normal” people. meanwhile becca is RAD AS SHIT and wears like. cool kid clothes idfk i hate designing clothes i just threw together an outfit for her rq it highkey suits her. also shes gets a SICK ASF MOHAWK OUT OF IT (FUCK YEAH)

maddy has made way more art of them than me but im tryna dabble when i can. here’s them playing ppt 5 because idfk and a quick icon i did of rebs to kick off her design. shes a little different now ofc

i could literally yap about my kids for ages as already stated we put SO MUCH TIME into this au so i know a LOT of shit but im tryna keep it brief. so if there’s anything you wanna know ask :)
