Lost Roads

Summary:

Madga runs.

Following the death of the sun she runs from home, what is supposed to be a place of comfort, but where she’s afraid they’ll hate her for what she’s done. She runs in the cold dark, avoiding people except to find brief reprieve of warmth and food not made from her own hands. Despite herself, her trust is easily gained, but even more easily lost as hate for her tribe of black-haired Gwae rises and falls over the passing centuries.

Immortal without understanding why or how, Madga runs. Until three people from separate tribes push their way into her life, following her along the path whether she wants them to or not.

Contains: - More cozy than epic fantasy - female MC - most of main cast are female - inspired by the Celts and Celtic Animism. Spirits, gods, druids, roundhouses, etc. - Sun is dead (think mythology. not world ending, or as impactful as you think. :/ sorry) - brief mention of sexual harassment (kind of), but does play a large part in the plot. - two main characters have disabilities (Meniere's disease[vertigo and little hearing loss]. Near-sighted. - some violence. Skulls and heads on spears, blood, dogs attacking humans. (no dogs are harmed)

The reason you can't be the next J R R Tolkien isn't because you don't have the talent, but because you're not the right kind of unwell. Tolkien wasn't bent for fantasy worldbuilding; he was bent for constructed languages, and got into fantasy worldbuilding in order to provide a material context in which to ground the notional evolution of the languages he invented. If you want to be the next Tolkien, you can't start with the worldbuilding; you've gotta find something extremely specific to fixate on, and develop it in such depth that inventing a world to contain it is genuinely the most logical next step.

Geoffrey's eyes snapped to Jonathan's. "What the hell? You know, if you wanted one, you could 'ave simply asked."

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you've only been paying attention to half of what I have been saying."

Rolling his eyes, Geoffrey said, "Right, just more prattle about your special tonics and potions." He removed his cigarette case from his coat pocket, flicked it open, but Jonathan reached out to quickly close it, nearly pinching Geoffrey's damn finger.

"Serums. Antidotes. And if you learned, they might save your life one day." Jonathan took a long pull from Geoffrey's cigarette, held his gaze through the soft grey cloud of smoke that he slowly exhaled. "Or one of your dear guardsmen. Besides, I distinctly recall you mentioning that you enjoy listening to me talk."

The cigarette was offered back to Geoffrey. Delicately held aloft between them. He leaned over the arm of the chair until he could press his lips over the end of the cigarette, against Jonathan's thumb and forefinger. Geoffrey inhaled, eyes never leaving the bloodshot-blue of the creature before him. He took the cigarette from his mouth and blew smoke directly into Jonathan's smug, handsome face.

"Let's give that tongue of yours a holiday from all this medical insight, hm? Use it for something a mite more useful. We can go over this later."

"What do you propose?" Jonathan asked on an exasperated sigh, a smile now curling one side of his mouth ever so slightly.

Geoffrey returned that knowing smirk, took a self-satisfied drag off his cigarette as he relaxed back in his chair, feeling triumphant already. "A trade-off. All of your undivided attention now"--he began unbuttoning his waistcoat and shrugged off his jacket--"for mine later. I'll learn whatever it is you want to show me. Even be a... hands-on pupil."

"That sounds reasonable enough to not argue against." Jonathan stood from his desk, looming now at his full height in front of Geoffrey. He removed his suit jacket and primly folded it over the back of his chair. Walked towards the small bed at the other end of his office, turning around because he bloody knew all too well how Geoffrey would want to watch him push every button open along his shirt placket. A slow, enticing torture whereas Geoffrey liked to rush his own undressing in these increasingly, shamefully, less rare moments they'd shared. "But let's see if you've the energy left for anything other than sleep once I'm done with you."

Something that’s been on my mind for quite some time: when did vinyl become the default physical music format?

Why is it seemingly the preferred option nowadays, and why is it so damn expensive? 😭

I’m ’80s-born/’90s-raised, so cassettes and CDs are my formats. And it gets frustrating sometimes—especially on Bandcamp—when I find an artist I really like, go looking for a physical copy of their music, and discover that the only option is a $40 record.

Meanwhile, I’m over here like… can I please just get a CD? A cassette? Anything?? 😭

Vinyl also seems so much more finicky to me. It takes up more space, requires more careful storage and maintenance, and none of that particularly appeals to me.

And I’m definitely not knocking vinyl collectors! We all have our preferred formats, and I completely understand the appeal of collecting records. I just feel like somewhere along the way, my preferences became the outlier.

Where are my CD and cassette people at? 😭

Anyone having problems with Beast of Reincarnation?

I started the game fine, but then I just began exploring (before even entering Subcity 1) and thought I could go back to the main quest at anytime.

But after a while I got to like lvl 15 and was looking for the coloured keys and couldn’t find them. I looked online and tried going to the Subcities but could only enter 2, and 1 and 3 wouldn’t open the hatch doors. I couldn’t even try going to the main quest-it’s like it was blocked or the game got upset that I felt the main quest.

I feel like I’m being punished for exploring in what feels like an area/game that I’m supposed to explore 😞

I’ve restarted and have followed the main quest, fought the Nushi. But I’m super worried that if I keep playing I won’t be able to explore because the game will do that again and no way I’m restarting if it happens so many areas in 😵‍💫
