It's been years since I last read Pride and Prejudice, but back in the day when I first read the book, I actually had a hard time being able to relate to Elizabeth Bennet at all, because I would absolutely have not been able to conduct myself with that much virtue and dignity.
If I had been put into a situation where my entire future would depend on whether people find my family annoying, me and my sister would have been literally killing each other with any available sharp object like we're stuck together in a Saw trap.
Rules: Without naming them, post a gif from ten of your favorite films, then tag ten people to do the same!
Tagged by @katzynia, thank you! And thank you for the patience - it's the first time logging on for a while, since I happened to noticed that this blog turned even more ancient (12 years) today :D

A few pictures from my time in Las Palmas, Canary Islands!
I've never been before but I completely understand why people visit: lovely balmy weather even in winter, nice food - and a great place to learn to dive! We completed our open water diving certificates at Buceo Canarias and can but recommend: great teacher, great dive locations. We'll be back for sure!
However, as the last picture shows, at least Las Palmas was still showing signs of the 2008 economic downturn, with abandoned construction sites dotted around the city. From what we gathered from locals, Covid also hit badly but visitor numbers are returning to the old normal (for good and bad).

I'm aware that most of the time when I don't get why something's done a certain way, and not the way I would think would be nicer, there's a perfectly sensible reason why that's not an option. But I'm also not a stranger to the concept that sometimes people who are not me are simply being irrational. That being said, I don't get why city areas need to have grass.
Every time I see a lawn somewhere this time of the year, it's fucking crisp. The grass is visibly dying. Like on one side of the road there's unworked land with lush green bushes and wild flowers and shit growing on the borders of a construction site, and on the other side there's a lawn, which is entirely yellowish brown. Save for the few green spots of native plants. I refuse to call them weeds, they fucking live here. Dandelions, clovers, anemones, wild chervil, there are so many completely wild flowers that are a joy to look at.
I get planting trees on the sides of the roads, they provide shade in the summer and improve mental health all year round, but why do we need grass. The grass isn't going to be nice to look at when the heat takes it down, I'm sure it costs the city infrastructure money to try to keep it alive, not to mention the water. I don't get why we wouldn't just let those little spots of land just go wild and grow whatever pleases to grow there. You can mow down the bushes and take out tree saplings once every two years or something so the whole city doesn't get overrun, but I don't get why we have to pay money to have the one on the left instead of letting it be like on the right. On its own. For free.
(I swear I am literally a professional artist and people have actually paid money for my illustrations. This isn't one of them.)
[Disclaimer: The following statements reflect the Finnish planning context. Other aspects may apply if you are in another location.]
Reasons (in no particular order):
- it is a safety thing for small animals (minor reason): higher grass means more hiding space for hedgehogs and cats and other similarly sized skittish animals (or very small children)
- it’s a safety thing for cars (major reason): so you can see along the road (and not hit said small skittish animals who decide to jump out from under a bush)
- keeping harmful pests at bay (like rats and ticks and snakes and stuff)
- keeping invasive species at bay (you notice them when you have to go and cut the grass every now and then)
- it enables the proliferation of traditional landscape plants that were normally found along the edges of fields and forests, but that today have little space to thrive as field and forest is more stationary than they used to be
- Because Of History: it’s always been done that way and no-one cares enough (or is paid enough) to change ingrained processes
However, things are changing! Slowly but surely people realise that those burnt strips of grass are… not very good, both aesthetically and from an environmental standpoint, no matter how much of a car-safety-focused peep you are. Experiments on roadside planting have been done since at least the late 90s in Finland, probably earlier in other parts of the world, and now that people have started waking up to the climate crisis, local resilience and green-blue planning is a very hot topic. So things are changing!
For example, one major reason for short grass is the car safety argument: if you can see the road, surely you are more likely to drive more carefully?
Not at all! Wider angles of sight and broader roads actually promote higher speeds and more unsafe driving! If you want truly safe city streets, they should be winding and have a lot of trees and bushes so you can’t just zone out behind the wheel but have to pay attention – the basis for many traffic calming measures today. Things are changing!
What you can do to promote better urban planning and introduce some nice local plants to the side of the road:
- vote in your local elections for people who promote things like these
- check if your city has some sort of landscape planning guidelines and/or environmental guide, and when you can make an impact on it if they are updating it? When is the ‘ask the citizens’-time (usually around a month)?
- send in suggestions if your city has a citizen participation system
- vote in your local elections
- suggest that your city gets a citizen participation system if they don’t have it already
- go to local political rallies and town meetings and those weekend “Let’s Mingle With The Voters” that local politicians both organise and go to! An opinion piece sent to the local newspaper/facebook page might get some traction, but do you know how hard it is to say ‘no’ to a person in front of you who comes with kind questions about the economic impact of the unsightly roadside lawns and how we really should promote local species since they are so much hardier and cheaper, don’t you agree?
- vote in your local elections
