HOSPITALS. ARE. ALREADY. REQUIRED. UNDER. LAW. TO. PROVIDE. LIFE. SAVING. EMERGENCY. CARE. REGARDLESS. OF. ABILITY. TO. PAY. OR. EVEN. CITIZENSHIP.
Stop acting like Americans have no access to emergency healthcare unless we socialize medicine.
IF. YOU. GO. AND. CANâT. PAY. YOUâRE. STILL. THOUSANDS. IN. DEBT. THIS. IS. NOT. ACCESS.
um iâm not from the US but Iâve heard of people being told to leave emergency depts cos they didnât take their insurance and having severe complications and even dying cos they didnât reach the other hospital in time . .
You heard right.
Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA)Â ârequires anyone coming to an emergency department to be stabilized and treated, regardless of their insurance status or ability to payâ.
But hereâs the kicker:Â since its enactment in 1986 itâs unfunded. Also, EMTALA only applies to hospitals receiving Medicare funds. âStabilized and treatedâ means they can dump you after they give you the barest of care, just enough so they can legally prove you werenât in danger of dying.
This country is a fucking nightmare for the sick.
Self reminder: youâre still young and youâre not supposed to have your whole life figured out yet. Donât stress. Everything will work out.
