LISTEN HERE
Kazue: Masuhama-san, you idiot, you can't listen to your machine music here!
Susamu: The TERM, Kogawa, is "industrial" you uncultured SWINE
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Kogawa Kazue, on Susamu(’s zanpakuto)
I feel so sorry for the Sixth Division members that get caught in the crossfire between Susamu and Kazue.
Luckily, he had been there when the reports had flooded in. A rukon district town was being destroyed, but no spiritual pressure was detected. The rokubantai was sent out to investigate. At first, Mayuri was only slightly interested, but once the reports came in that the town was destroyed from Hollows concealing their reiatsu, Mayuri ordered members from his own squad to collect data.
But he was unable to be patient, and the urge to find out more was shaking him down to his very core. He had to know more. So here he was at the sixth division headquarters.
Honey gold eyes glanced over at the source of the voice. This was… ah, the third seat of the rokubantai. She did not interest him in the slightest, but perhaps her knowledge would be useful. Grinning from ear to ear and attempting to give her his most sincere smile, he turned to her.
“Can you blame me for being so excited? This is such an incredible discovery, after all!” he explained to her, but completely disregarded her request, instead tilting his head to further question. “So, did you see them? Will there be more? Please, I’d like for you to tell me all you know… Kogawa-kun.” It wasn’t often Mayuri used honorifics, and the word seemed to ooze out of his mouth in a foul, higher pitch than his normal speaking voice, almost as if he were taunting her. But really, he was just trying to get her to spill her guts. After all, he simply had to know more!
From a distanced, logical perspective, Kazue understood the value and necessity of the Twelfth Division’s current incarnation. No shinigami could say that the division wasn’t a valuable contributor to the Gotei and the Seireitei as a whole. But that didn’t mean Kazue had to like it - or the mad scientist who ran the whole thing.
Kazue deliberately stepped in front of the door leading to the rooms of her injured officers, curling her hand around the door frame to use a guide. Though the hollow had eventually been taken down, almost every member of the squad had been injured in one way or another, including the seated officer that led the team - thus their current location in the Fourth.
She had to restrain herself from grimacing as he said her name - honorific and all - in that oily tone. It required effort to keep her voice flat and her face completely blank. “I was not part of the team that responded to the alert, Kurotsuchi-taichō. All I know comes from the preliminary report given to me by the leader of the team before their admission to the Fourth. I have already arranged for more patrols to be sent to the town in case there are other hollows of the same kind in the surrounding area. As I said before, you will be alerted along with the other captains once we have a full report. Until then, please be patient.”
Kazue suspected that asking Kurotsuchi-taichō to follow protocol would be pointless, but at least this way she could tell Kuchiki-taichō she tried.
set your past on fire and leave
“That is to be expected.” He, too, was familiar with the experience. Isolated though the Seireitei was, that never ceased the ebb and flow of news or gossip to the Academy and, eventually, the Rukogai. How could they keep the events of the invasion a secret when Kurosaki nearly barged through the first district’s gate? No, the details of the Ryoka, of Aizen’s betrayal, were already the subject of whispers. Those rumors – regardless of how much truth they might contain – were bound to taint their perceptions of the Gotei.
“We can place those who show promise for future seated positions under Shirogane for now.” The young woman had served in his division since her graduation, alongside her father before his retirement. She had the patience necessary to guide them, but the severity to push their limits. “In time she will let us know who is suited to advance.”
“How is their cooperation?” he continued after a moment’s pause. Byakuya expected nothing but the height of efficiency from his division, though it was more than that; one could not stand in battle and doubt the comrade at your back. Some feared the traitors’ defection would inspire suspicion among their ranks, distrust between soldiers who served together for decades. Now more than ever it was imperative they strengthen those bonds instead, particularly for the ones only just joining them.
Kazue dipped her head in wordless acknowledgment. For all of the damage Aizen had done to the Gotei, that was over now; all they could do was clean up the aftermath. At least some good had come out of it. Shirogane was a good choice to oversee their training; Kazue herself would check in from time to time, but when she oversaw training, it was typically for the more senior officers.
If Kazue had been anyone else, she might have rolled her eyes at that question; as it was, she simply sighed. “It would be decent if they could remember that this is not the Academy. They are too competitive, all vying for a nonexistent top spot.”
She questioned the structure of the Academy, at times. The ranking of the classes and heavy pressure to compete for higher rankings might provide students with an incentive to improve, but it also tended to get in the way of teamwork - and in the Gotei, that could mean death. If shinigami spent all their time arguing over who got to deal the finishing blow to the hollow instead of focusing on the actual fight, they might very well end up paying for that mistake with their lives.
“Thankfully, they do not seem to be seriously suspicious of each other, so it is at least salvageable.” Competition was one thing; suspecting your fellow shinigami of possible betrayal was another. Aizen’s actions sparked distrust and suspicion between many shinigami, particularly those of the Third, Fifth, and Ninth, but luckily that did not seem to extend to the recruits.

Oh, she just couldn’t help herself.
To finally be able to come and visit Seireitei ( even after everything’s been destroyed ) was something the royal guard anxiously looked towards. But of course, there job was to make their grand entrance among soul society’s beloved captains and to obtain those required to come. The way Kirio does it is just slightly different. She will play by her own rules, but at the same time, she won’t break the soul king’s direct commands. And with the key to the palace embedded in her bones, she can come and go as she pleases. It was ideal to come and go with the rest of them, but oh, she just couldn’t help herself.
As she roamed the familiar roads of Seireitei, she noticed a figure seated among the rubble of what was once part of the sixth division barracks. She walked towards her and sat down right beside the other, who seemed to be too immersed within her own thoughts to notice.
“How about easing your mind with a little snack?”
Half of the Gotei’s shinigami are dead or crippled. Half. The Seireitei is in shambles. Both Kuchiki-taichou and Abarai-fukutaichou are in critical condition; there’s no telling when ( if ) either of them will wake up. And so it falls to Kazue to pull her division together, to somehow impress upon them that not all hope is lost even as they burn the dead corpses of their comrades in mass funeral pyres. They do not have the time - or even the room - to host funerals for everyone who died in the short but incredibly brutal invasion.
Eventually, she finishes handing out what orders she can, and walks out of the room she’s co-opted from the first division. Without her concious decision, Kazue’s feet begin to walk towards the rubble of the sixth division. She sinks to her knees in what remains of the courtyard that Lieutenant Abarai and Captain Kuchiki sparred in not too long ago.
Kazue has not cried in a long time, perhaps not since Minoru’s death, but right now she’s sorely tempted to.
She almost misses the approach of a vaguely familiar reiatsu signature. Almost, but not quite. It’s massive, perhaps even above captain-level, and while Kazue has sure she’s felt it before, she cannot quite place it. But she can guess.
“...Hikifune-taichou?”
“bruises?”
SEND ME “BRUISES?” FOR MY MUSE’S REACTION TO YOURS CATCHING THEM SECRETLY TENDING TO THEIR WOUNDS.
As a third seat, Kazue is most likely never going to set foot in the Living World. However, she’s just low enough in the hierarchy that she is occasionally pulled from her duties of paperwork and training to hunt down a particularly nasty hollow within the Rukongai. Today was one of those days, and unfortunately the group of hollows in question got a few hits in before she finished them off. Her injuries are fairly superficial, for all that they leave an entire side of her face tender, so instead of heading over to the Fourth Kazue decides to heal them herself.
She does not, however, expect Lieutenant Abarai to walk in when he does. Kazue pulls her hand, still humming with the power of kaido, away from her half-healed face.
“Is there something you needed, Lieutenant Abarai? The hollow extermination was routine, and I will have a full report typed for both you and Captain Kuchiki in a few hours.”
