The lazy sky above her pagoda was torn apart, revealing a dark ocean of eyes beneath. It bathed her pristine temple in black and blue.
However, Mystic Flour's gaze remained focused on Sylphrena, her ally and nightmare in one. She should be thankful; an ending is the only thing she wished for. Part of her wanted to reach for the other, allow her friend to end her miserable existence once and for all.
But another part of her could not get over the wrongness of it all.
"Consider me welcomed," she spoke softly. Unsure whether the other could even hear her over the chaos that must be the inside of their mind. "But I presumed you disliked endings? There is no more story to be told once the show is over, the actors leave, the script is stowed, and the director goes home. Once you finish rending this place to dust in your grand performance, what will you do then?"

A crack in an ivory statue. A blemish on a white canvas. Missed by many, but noticeable by those who dare to get close enough to look. Sylphrena was an art collector and had just called out a flaw in a particular piece. The words felt like an accusation.
Mystic Flour stilled. Her hands, which had previously been lighting an incense, stopped midway.
Silence hung between them for a moment. The beast of apathy kept her breathing controlled, trying to look unaffected. Had Sylph been watching her so closely? Since when?
"I have only ever done what I must," she finally said while refusing to meet the other's gaze. Stiffly lighting the stick and placing it within the burner. "No more, no less..."

oh, come on. he knows her! she can be funny! trying to be funny on purpose is an entirely different beast, however — no pun intended.
❝ anywho, those are MY terms. ❞ he snags his cup of tea out of midair and takes a sip. then, hands it to one of his tentacles when he's done. ( those extra limbs sure are useful. ) ❝ the only question now is what YOU want to get out of this. c'mooon, don't leave me in suspense! ❞ shadow milk tilts his head. ❝ ya want me to juggle? speak exclusively in rhyme for a day? retuuuurn to floooour? ❞
Of all things to finally end her long life, this little bargain may be the thing to do it. She could only hope Maestro decides to ask for something different should he actually win. How ironic, to wish that the beast of deceit was lying.
As for what she'd ask for if she won... she had not placed much thought into it, truthfully. This was an unspoken repayment. A way to give back some of what he'd given her.
"Tempting," she huffs. "But no." What to ask for...
Telling him to watch the little haetae for a few days could be amusing; however, they'd already agreed not to drag their followers into it. Then another idea bloomed, making a small smile form on her face.
"You'll join me for a few hours of meditation. Calm, silent, and perfectly still meditation. You can survive a few hours of that, yes? Should you need to get up and move around, we can extend the time to compensate as needed."

the spire's interior is far quieter than its hectic exterior. high ceilings, walls made of pale, smooth stone and windows depicting celestial imagery crafted from cool-toned stained glass. occasionally, the odd rabbit or cookie may pass them — the latter often regarding the virtues with surprise or awe, before hurrying away with their head respectfully bowed. the fount merely offers them a thin-lipped smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes.
❝ overworked... ❞ the virtue hums softly, turning back to his companion. ❝ i suppose such is the cost of the responsibility we emissaries bear. ❞ he's a bit reluctant to confirm what that observation implies aloud — that he is also overworked. ( unnecessary, the fount reasons. she's already witnessed enough. ) putting it into words feels like an admission of weakness. ❝ ... but we wouldn't be entrusted with this purpose if the witches did not think we were capable of it. ❞ he chooses to say instead. ❝ we are the only ones who can guide them to enlightenment. ❞
the fount pauses, peering up at one of the spire's many stained glass murals. it depicts himself, a ball of light cradled between his hands as countless, miniature cookies peer up at him with implied awe. ❝ truthfully, i have been wondering recently... ❞ the words trail off for a moment, a tinge of reluctance coloring his tone. ❝ for eons i have resided over the spire... answering their questions day after day after day — but despite all of my knowledge, there are those who still find my answers... unsatisfactory. ❞ is this the limit of his virtue? more and more the fount has found himself pondering that question. but that couldn't possibly be right. surely the fault must lie with him. ❝ i've wondered if changing my methods altogether may yield better results. instead of simply telling cookies the answer to their problems and hoping for the best... ❞ mismatched gaze flicks again to the mural — to the ball of light his glass doppelganger holds. ❝ what if i gave them the means to solve those problems themselves? ❞
it's a bold plan. perhaps even blasphemous. magic has never been widely available for cookiekind — but what if that were to change?
the fount blinks, seemingly remembering he has company. ❝ sorry. ❞ he's quick to apologize, sounding far more sheepish than the bastion of knowledge he was baked to be. ❝ it's been quite a while since i've had the chance to speak with one of my peers! the... bunnies don't make for very stimulating conversation. ❞ he waves an arm in the direction they were walking. ❝ i've added a new wing to the spire. i've... taken an interest in collecting artwork. more artwork. ❞ for educational purposes.
The Flour of Volition wordlessly greeted all they passed with either a wave or a nod. The gesture was more robotic than intentional, years of politely greeting those who entered her chamber before making their demands.
Her next genuine response was the tension in her shoulders relaxing at his unspoken confession. While she wished suffering on no one, it was merciful to know she wasn't the only one struggling. "We were baked for this," she agreed softly. If only there was a way to ease all their burdens...
Knowledge and volition. Mind and will. Is it any surprise that their struggles are mirrored?
She stood at his side before the mural, pale eyes giving the fine work of art a once-over before her gaze settled on her fellow virtue. Granting him full attention.
Give cookies the means to solve problems themselves? It took her a moment to understand what exactly he was implying. If the witches wanted cookies to have magic, would they not have simply given it to them? But perhaps the power to grant their own wishes would ease their troubled hearts; perhaps they would not need to climb her steps to beg for tokens and trinkets they could conjure themselves.
An awkward silence lingered between them for a moment as she thought.
"No, I'm sorry." She looked away. "Your idea is wonderful. Magic, to all? A beautiful, selfless wish." Her smile weakened. "Truthfully, I have also been pondering my purpose. So many wishes, so many wants and needs to fill. I give them what they need and they return for what they want. It can be..." awful? overwhelming? painful? She trailed off. "I have tried to meditate on a solution to their endless wants, but I am..." always interrupted, always called upon, always needed.
She couldn't find the words, and it hurt. It hurt so damn much.
"My point is," finally, she took one of his hands, gently holding it with both of hers. "I think that is a wonderful, beautiful idea, Fount of Knowledge."
Perhaps, if he is successful, she will no longer need to meditate on a way to fulfill all of Earthbread's desires.

ah, but what ARE the spoils in this context? that's a good question. shadow milk was considering keeping it a secret to the very end, buuut since mystic flour asked so nicely, he supposes he doesn't mind spoiling the twist. ❝ weeell, now that i think about it, the minions and i could use a vacation home. how's about... ownership of the ivory pagoda? ❞ he pauses a moment, in the hopes that she might start to believe he's actually being serious. then, exhales an exaggerated sigh. ❝ on second thought, the spiders might have a thing or two to say about that. ❞ knowing his luck, they would try to eat candy apple. ❝ why not your soul jam, instead? ❞ a light frown. ❝ hmm. too predictable. bragging rights? already getting those anyway. let me think, let me think! ❞
shadow milk grabs his tea, cooling it to the optimal temperature for drinking with but a thought. he takes a sip, humming thoughtfully. ❝ heeere's an idea. ❞ a smile suddenly spreads across his face as he peers over his cup.
❝ if i win, you have to tell me a joke. but, but, but it can't just be ANY old joke — oh, no! ❞ shadow milk's smile turns mischievous. ❝ it has to make me laugh. can you han-dle that or should i stick with plan a? ❞
Mystic Flour Cookie's eyes darkened a few shades when she said she wanted ownership over the Ivory Pagoda. She should not care if she takes it; the structure holds no value to her. Perhaps she'd be doing her a favour by taking it, another severed tie to this material realm.
Before she could process her feelings on the potential loss, he carried on. Allowing her to turn her gaze back to her cup and discard the thought entirely.
"A joke?" She repeats slowly, suspicion seeping into her tone. Yet, her only rebuttal was a poor one; even she could admit that. "That is hardly a favor..."
But she could only sigh, the deal was already done. "How like you to give an impossible task." For everyone knew the beast of apathy did not tell jokes.
Ignore every time she's been funny; those do not count.

And yet, before the master of deceit said anything the cubs mind was already wandering. Why be harder on the other beasts, it’s not like they’d take their master away right?
Unless…
Unless they got together and Mystic Flour moved to their domain instead. Taking her away from the Ivory pagoda forever, away from them forever…
No, that wouldn’t happen.
