Cues are a necessary evil
Tonight I worked with Cassie on her lead, just some simply transitions and send offs in a small longe. She’s a smart cookie, and works hard for a “good girl” but I noticed over time, her transitions to the left from the right were amazing but her transitions from right to left were subpar. To me, this makes sense given her vision issues and their prominence on the left front. I was focusing on a grounded step back when I wanted her to swap directions and then an encouraging hand sending the way of going but realized, on the transition to the left I need to add a word. She tends to float in space and is not near as rounded, as well as her hesitancy towards sending off that way.
Audacity
The other day I had a local professional say “I don’t know how your little business is still running.”
He then proceeded to whine about his clients, whine about his wife’s business not succeeding, and wish clients were more educated and professional.
I think what got me the most, was the audacity to say this to me. I know what his wife has falsely said of me, in order to make a buck, and the whining is a subject for a different time.
In this business, we need to be mindful of our clients and who we are willing to spend time with. If you want only $25,000 horses and trophy rooms, you best stick with those circles.
Addiction
Heard from a client this evening, she described the changes seen in her work with a young appendix gelding. A lower headset, more of a stride and less fussy over using his hind end were the noted successes. She also snapped a pic of his hind end, his sacrum is leveling.
I’m so proud she’s able to see the difference as she has. It’s always fun to have a new case make progress but even more when you can show the owner/trainer/human the horse before and after. It’s an addiction, for me and them.
