The eyewall passed us over almost directly and my small town will never be be the same again. My hometown has been torn apart.

Hi friends. Katie here. The above picture is the downtown area of my little town. We live just north of Panama City, Florida. If you’ve seen the footage out of PC, then you know it’s total devastation down here. Mexico Beach is gone This photo is just a fraction of the damage in Marianna. It sounds like nearly every tree has been broken or uprooted. I’ve only spoken to one person who doesn’t have some kind of tree-related damage to my their home or vehicle. There’s a large oak limb laying on my house right now. No one has power, and likely will not for a long time. The hospital has totally closed down. I’m starting to see more messages on Facebook from people trapped in their homes, begging for help for themselves or their family members.

I don’t post this as a plea for money, though if you find a way to donate, God bless you. But no, I post this as a warning. Do not EVER underestimate a storm like this. We Floridians joke around a lot about hurricanes, but no one is joking now. If you ever receive an evacuation order, YOU LISTEN TO IT. It is not put out purely to frighten people or inconvenience them. THEY ARE MEANT TO SAVE YOUR LIFE.

My advice when folks are struggling with writing in the third-person omniscient is to Lemony Snicket it up. Give your omniscient narrator strong opinions about what’s going on. Don’t fall into the trap of assuming that the third-person omniscient perspective must also use the objective voice; those are two separate things, and many of the most popular and successful writers who’ve written in the third-person omniscient do not, in fact, use the objective voice.

“Willingness to admit the narrative has a voice” is, I think, a big part of what makes young adult literature so much more engaging than a lot of books marketed at adults, particularly adult men.
