Here it is!!!!!!!!
Mulder: If you need anything, you just call me.
Scully: I can’t imagine that I will.
This Is Insanity: "My Struggle III” Miraculously Enables Me To Despise Chris Carter More
After posting a bit about the Big Reveal at the end of “My Struggle III,” I felt sort of obligated to watch the episode. I mean, I thought, maybe the plot summary makes this episode sound worse than it is. Maybe this is really a flawed yet enjoyable hour of television that happens to be loused up in the final 2 minutes by a really asinine decision made by Chris Carter; and really, have I not seen enough asinine decisions from him to be more or less inured to them? Plus I hear Mulder and Scully have some good screen time together in this one.
So I watched it.
I really thought, after “Babylon” and “My Struggle I & II,” that I had run out of scorn where Chris Carter is concerned. But damned if this episode didn’t inspire me to dig deep and get a little more. This is bad television. Setting aside the implications of the much-discussed Final Revelation, Chris Carter’s writing itself is just so technically incompetent that it fills me with rage.

The X-Files MSR Analysis Series: Season 1 Episode 2
“Deep Throat”
When writing my notes for this episode, I just stopped mid-episode and scrawled on the page: SO MUCH SMILING! Because seriously, there is so much low key flirting in this episode; literally so much smiling. The UST is born my friends, the UST is born.
Something else that tickled me when watching season 1 is the sheer number of times Mulder invades Scully’s personal space. He just can’t seem to help himself, and I honestly think he doesn’t even notice he’s doing it.
The guy has no notion of boundaries - he gets right up in her face and smiles at her, then offers to buy her a drink?! Mulder, do you want her to fall for you? Are you actually trying to make it happen? I honestly think Scully didn’t stand much of a chance.
All these years later, having forgotten most of the little details of their interactions in the early seasons, I find myself realising that before rewatching this, the only way I would have ever bought Mulder offering to buy Scully a drink at a bar is in fanfic, but nope, here it is. Right at the beginning.
He’s different towards her in these early episodes. Before their devotion to each other has taken root, they’re lighter, easy going, flirty… I dunno, they have a different feel to them. Even Scully seems less… rigid? She has her moments still though.
Despite Chris Carter’s suggestion otherwise, I don’t think Mulder fell in love with Scully at first sight, but he’s definitely intrigued by her and of course attracted to her. This is just the continuing development of that. So while I don’t think he’s “in love”, I do honestly believe he’s drawn to her, and he trusts her. Maybe not completely yet, but he wants to.
I think it’s pretty similar for Scully, although for her, I think she’d be a bit more self aware. She’s aware she finds him attractive, but is a consummate professional and feels herself above such girlish things. As we learn of Scully in later episodes such as season 6′s Milagro, she is fully aware of being a woman in the Boys Club. She knows she has to work twice as hard to earn half as much respect, and a dalliance with your male co-worker would be a huge transgression of her own morals, I think.
So, brief rundown… in my opinion at this stage he’s attracted to her and unaware of it - and so it possibly affects his behaviour outside of his awareness, whereas she is attracted to him but is aware of it, and so is far more reserved and holds back.
Another little interesting titbit in this early scene is Mulder holding back from Scully. After being approached by Deep Throat and being told to drop the case - as it was endangering himself and Scully - he doesn’t tell her about it. She notices he’s shaken, but he brushes her off.
It strange to go back and see their relationship before the familiar and comforting trust is established between them. Seeing Mulder feel like he has to hold back, and not be honest with Scully about what’s going on - it’s a weird feeling, like going so far back into the past and arriving at a time and a place that I barely remember ever existing. The 90′s man. It was rough.
I kid, I kid… kinda.
Now the next thing that happens, it has no MSR significance at all, but holy freakin God - MULDER HAS A KITCHEN?!
Look at that! It’s a kitchen! Did I mention the kitchen?? There’s a knife block and everything! I know we see it again later in season 5′s Chinga - but I guess he got the decorators in because Chinga kitchen looks slightly different to this one. Clearly the same room, but different configuration.
I have no idea why I got so excited seeing Mulder’s kitchen… his apartment is an X-File in of itself; who knows where these rooms are and how you get to them.
Now back to our regularly scheduled MSR.
Awwwww yeeeeeeeah. It’s the back touching; here we are people; the beginning of a beautiful relationship between Mulder’s hands and the small of Scully’s back. Mind out of the gutter, guys.
Now, we take a quick aside into what I like to call cute!Mulder moments. I want to explain definitively how can I be so sure Scully is attracted to Mulder. You know, other than the fact she outright says he’s cute in a later episode? (shhhh that’s cheating).
Yeah, I’ll just leave this here.
You’re welcome, guys. Yooooooou’re welcome.
You can’t stop smiling now, can you? I can tell. Stop smiling. STOP SMILING!
Aw shit, now look what’s happening… it’s now Scully invading Mulder’s personal space! You’re blowing a hole in my “Scully is holding back” theory there, Dana.
But actually, I think it still holds up, since I think she’s more exasperated with him than feeling the tingles at this moment. But it’s still fun. She’s comfortable with him, and he with her.
Do you think Mulder is just that kind of guy? Touchy feely? Doesn’t think anything of touching people or getting up close and personal? I will have to observe him with other people in later episodes to see how that bares out.
The next bit made me howl, and it’s only needed 20 years to pass for it to be funny.
Going back to what I was mentioning earlier, about how different these two are towards each other in the early episodes; first I want to say it makes total sense, they barely know each other, so despite having an instant rapport and liking each other, they still have their own agendas. Mulder is obsessed with his crusade to find out what the government knows about UFOs and find out what happened to his sister, as he says in the pilot - nothing else matters to him.
There there, Mulder… that will change real soon.
But Scully, what’s her agenda? I quite enjoy seeing that back in the day, she once cared about her FBI career, and in fact she gets irritated with Mulder not following the rules because she will have to write it in the field reports, the ones that are being used to spy on Mulder. She tries to not only warn him about this, but she’s worried for herself. Of course she is, this is her career and this kooky, albeit beautiful man, is gonna get her in trouble. Ah, remember when Scully cared about getting in trouble? Haha…yeah me neither. It’s fun going back and seeing this side of her again.
Now I have to admit, a lot of what I notice in these early episodes is cute!Mulder rather than say cute!Scully because out of the two, his characterisation is most pronounced - she’s set up as more of a foil for him, which relegates her to the voice of reason, the straight (wo)man to Mulder’s crazy.
So I love when they ramp up his child-like wonder and play Scully off of that instead. He’s like a puppy looking at the world with wide-eyed awe that he’s desperate to share. The way he grabs Scully’s hand and basically drags her up the hill - God, I love it.
She just goes with him too; she’s honestly the only human being in this world who would tolerate him - because as we know, this is only the tip of the iceberg where Mulder’s inconsiderate yet exasperatingly charming behaviour is concerned. This is nothing when you think of how he will push her in the future, and yet she will always give him what he needs without asking for much of anything in return.
CSM chose well. He has good HR skills, should he ever consider a career change.
Insert your own joke here. Filth.
The language of their unspoken communication is beginning to be written here, and it’s beautiful to behold. This show definitely perfected the art of “staring at each other” to signify the deep and meaningful. She’s at a loss, and in awe of what she’s seeing, whereas he is vindicated - finally something concrete and real that he can see with his own two eyes. I think he’s just enjoying that he has someone to share this moment with, someone else to see what he’s seeing; that it’s undeniable. It’s funny to think how far they will come from this point.
What I love about Mulder, is how easy going he can be about all of this; he definitely has his moments where he takes it deadly serious and will risk his life, and frankly Scully’s life too to get to the truth (I mean, that’s exactly what happens later in this very episode), but there are also times when he can just enjoy the absurdity of a situation.
Case in point, stoner Seth Green.
Even Scully can’t resist. Oh let go, Dana… you know you want to.
Mulder is such a dork. I’m British - we don’t even use the word dork here, but honestly, there is no other word to describe him in this moment.
Oh God, what the hell is he doing with his hands? Mulder trying to be down with the kids. Please stop it, also don’t - I love it. But at the same time, stop.
I said stop!
Ok ok, enough of cute!Mulder being cute. Let’s get to some flirting action, shall we? Scully - you’re up!
Don’t even try to tell me she’s not flirting with him here. The way she’s playing with her hair, her fingers brushing her face; jaw tilted upwards. The slow, knowing smile… I don’t think any of it is conscious - not even in the context of this being a TV show, I don’t think any of this was written or intended - we all know it wasn’t. So there is something between these actors that brings this flirtation out, that elevates it above what was on the page. I love that about Mulder and Scully’s relationship - it wasn’t intended, it wasn’t expected and from Chris Carter’s POV, it wasn’t even wanted - but it was undeniable. It was a consequence of the writing, rather than a product of it and to deny it is to be untruthful to the characters.
I think that’s why they resonate with so many people, and still do so many years after the show originally ended - because they feel real; their chemistry and subtle sexual tension feels completely natural and not manufactured; not acted. It’s honestly one of the most incredible on-screen pairings because of that very fact.
Ok Mulder’s turn. Flirt right back G-Man.
So much happens in this car, like, more smiling… I just love how smiley these guys are in season 1. Does anyone else think they get pretty mopey later on? It seems they only get to smile in the comedy episodes, but this is a pretty serious mythology episode, in fact it’s the first ever mythology episode, with a lot of parallels to season 10′s My Struggle I but they still smile, they still have fun. I kinda miss how they could blend the two together rather than separate them out.
So have a bit more smiling before shit get’s serious…
Aaaaand a bit more… God, can these two stop flirting with each other? They’re supposed to be investigating UFOs and shit.
I can hear season 10 Mulder pouting from here. “You don’t laugh at my jokes like that anymore, Scully.”
Now after this scene this is where we see the birth of a familiar pattern of behaviour for Mulder and Scully. It goes a little something like this:
1. Mulder and Scully argue over the existence or non-existence of a extraterrestrial/paranormal phenomenon.
2. Scully wins said argument, WITH SCIENCE and Mulder pretends to concede.
3. Mulder ditches Scully in some fashion to go it alone.
4. Mulder gets balls deep into mortal danger.
5. Scully, being the angel of mercy that she is, will do whatever is necessary to track down and rescue Mulder’s sorry ass.
6. Rinse repeat for the next 9 years.
Mulder does finally tell Scully about Deep Throat or “a man in DC” as we know him now. After they both got hauled off by the military police, he seems to have decided to go all in, and he wants her to go all in with him. But while she at least listens to his theory, she’s not willing to risk their jobs to test it’s validity.
Whereas Mulder definitely is. So she wins the argument, he pretends to do what she wants, then runs off without her and ends up balls deep in mortal danger. Well done.
We feel you, Scully.
Now two things happen here that I want to talk about. One is MSR, the other is not. So, think of the non-MSR thing as a bit of a bonus round. Like Mulder’s Kitchen. In fact, I should name this section - Mulder’s Kitchen!
So what are we rustling up in Mulder’s kitchen tonight?! The clear parallels to My Struggle I regarding ARVs. Alien Replica Vehicles.
Now it’s no secret this episode and My Struggle I are linked, since there are behind the scenes videos where Chris Carter straight up says the ARV seen in season 10 is meant to be an up to date version of the ARV seen here in Deep Throat.
Another detail I’d somehow forgotten over the years, is that Mulder does not remember seeing the ARV - his memory is erased. So when he sees the one up close in My Struggle I, for him it’s the first time he ever recalls seeing one. Just a fun detail. Not MSR at all, but you know… Mulder’s kitchen.
Now back to the far more serious matter of Mulder and Scully’s slow burn romance. We have Scully doing what Scully does best, which is kicking ass and taking names. We learn here that Scully is definitely not what she might at first appear, which is a straight-laced, by the book kind of girl. No, she is definitely not adverse to taking people hostage at gun point to get shit done. Especially when it comes to Mulder.
This becomes a bit of a thing for Scully, she has a violent, rebellious streak that she unleashes on people when they threaten those she cares about, and when they threaten Mulder especially, she shows her incredibly protective and territorial nature. I love this side of Scully, combine this with jealous!Scully and it’s a good time all round. When their burgeoning feelings brim closest to the surface and risk spilling out, that’s what gets my ya-yas out.
And that’s pretty much it for Deep Throat. Mulder is shaken, having no idea what’s happened after his memory has been erased, and is frustrated that he has no answers. Whereas Scully has just had enough, after having just gone through a prisoner exchange with the military no less, she’s done entertaining Mulder’s nonsense and is ready to get the eff outta dodge.
See you all soon for 1x03 - Squeeze. The first truly classic X-Files episode.
