Dean sets a cup of coffee in front of Cas and sits adjacent to him at the kitchen table. Then he smacks Cas’ knee and says, “Hey. Happy anniversary.”
“What?” Cas asks, sounding annoyed. He hates when Dean tries to speak to him before he’s had his coffee.
“It’s the anniversary of when we met. Remember? I stabbed you in the chest, and you almost killed Bobby.”
“I didn’t almost kill him. I knew what I was doing.”
“Yeah. You were real smooth.”
“And anyway, that was on September 21st, not the 18th.”
“I met you on September 18th when I pulled you from hell and–”
“Nearly busted my eardrums in the gas station, yeah.”
“But you met me on September 21st.”
Dean drinks his coffee and looks forward pensively.
“You didn’t have some big plans or something, did you?” Cas asks nervously.
“Nah, dude. Just thinking.”
For the rest of the day, Dean acts normal except for the fact that he incessantly hums a tune to himself for hours on end.
That night, Cas is just about to fall asleep when he hears Dean humming directly into his ear. Cas squeezes his hand and grumbles, “Dean, I’m trying to sleep.”
Two minutes pass before Dean starts humming again.
“Dean. What are you even–”
“Do you remember,” Dean sings, “the 21st night of September…”
