anyway, my older sister was adopted when she was almost 16 (kinda on accident too), and because of that she got away from an abusive household, went from barely passing classes to being an honour student, and launching into a career where she’s happy and healthy and paying her own way. just two years of parenting where she had 3 meals a day, a bedtime, and parents to help and protect her changed her life radically. Plus, i got an older sister

guess what, my parents have a few years with me too when i became a teenager. obviously it’s not exactly the same growing up with your birth parents, and adjusting to a new life with a adoptive parents at as a teenager, but only having a few years with them is no excuse not to adopt teenagers. same logic could be applied to the kids you gave birth to. was my aunt supposed to tell my mom that she only has a few years left with me when i turned 14, and my mom was supposed to abandon me because of that?

kids don’t disappear. if you adopt a teenager, they won’t disappear after they’re 18 (if you did a good job raising them in the time you had together, like the op’s parents). they might move and start their own lives, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone. the same thing happens to kids you gave birth to, they leave eventually. you can’t keep your kids with you all their lives, no matter the age at which they started their life with you. kids have to set off on their own one day, live their lives. parents are there to guide them into life, to teach them things in their early years, prepare them for their own lives once they do finally set off

also, you don’t stop being a kid at 18?? just because you’re legally an adult, doesn’t mean you’re an adult. you can live with your parents (adoptive or not) longer, the age of 18 isn’t an expiration date for when you must move away. and besides, once you turn 18, you’re still a teenager, slowly transitioning into a young adult, you still need your parents and guardians. not just at that age, but all through life, because they’re your guides. my mom is 43 and she still turns to her mom for help. you always need your parents, that never changes, and the fact that those parents adopted someone who is already a teenager doesn’t change that either.

“you only have a few years with them” is a bullshit excuse for selfish people. those kids need a family and someone to love them just as much as infants, toddlers and younger kids. just because they’re older doesn’t mean they don’t need guidance, love and support of a real family, and if that’s something you can provide to a child, it shouldn’t matter of that child is 7 months or 17 years old. a child is a child, regardless of their age. if a good family is something you can provide, you shouldn’t care who you provide it to. these are kids who found themselves in such a situation because they either, unfortunately, lost their family, have been abandoned or just never adopted. the fact that they’re a little older doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a loving family.

normalize teenage adoption. those kids need a family as much as an infant does. it’s that simple.
