My therapist told me that she writes her notes on me in code because they have to be shared with my insurance company, so instead of gender dysphoria she writes “identity issues” and so on, in case being outed on record puts me at risk. I told her this wasn’t necessary, at this point I’ve undergone multiple gender confirmation surgeries and I have an X on my IDs, I’m as out as can be, paperwork-wise. Still, I felt a pang of realization that there are a forever unknown number of therapist notes, doctors notes, records, biographies, diaries, etc of trans people throughout history that are similarly using coded language or not mentioning the individual being transgender, and that all of those trans people are invisible to us in the modern day. Obviously that’s not their fault, but since I can, I want to live my life in such a way that any historian learning about me would learn that I was trans and living within my contemporary trans community and culture. This is why we should all be posting nudes.
