what if every Tumblr user suddenly looses their mouse?
J = Next Post K = Previous Post L = Like N = View Notes Space = Show Photo Shift + R = Reblog Shift + E = Add to Queue Z + Tab = Switch Blogs
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.
I just reblogged this with the command, shit
Do you know how much this helps people who have trouble with the mouse? (Me, other disabled people) thank you
Yup, I use these when my hands get particularly weak (like now)
Alt + R is the new command to reblog Alt + Q is the new command to queue

Don't give up the fight
In light of the recent rulings from the SCOTUS, don't by into the narrative being spun. Don't abandon the blue party, don't decide not to vote. Yeah, those in power now more or less suck at their jobs. Both sides. Well, the red side could argue their people are doing exactly what they want them to do. But not voting or voting 3rd party or even red is still worse than voting blue. And we need to keep voting blue. Till these old out of touch farts retire or pass away naturally and let new, younger blood in there. Younger blood like AOC who are more in touch with us. With you and your generation. And by all means, don't stop there. Protest if you can do so safely and its your thing. Write your congressperson. Write the President. Tell them you are not happy and they need to do more. But please do go vote. It may not seem like it matters this time or next. But remember in 2016 when it seemed like it didn't matter? We can't let that happen again. Status quo for now is better than going back 100 years in laws. Status quo is good for now till the younger generations get themselves elected and can drive real change.
Things I will never know
I always feared the day I’d finally find you because I didn’t know you. Didn’t know your beliefs. Political, religious, views on LGBTQ+. Was afraid you’d want something from Dad, something I don’t have to give. Or afraid you would still be so angry about that time…
But I still wanted to find you. Wanted to let you know about him. What happened. In case it mattered to you or was needed for care reasons.
I wanted to find you to know the truth of what happened. Why did your mom and our dad break up? What did she know? What did you know?
Did you ever try and find me, ever wonder about what happened with us? Did you know my mom and our dad also split up? What was your favorite movie, favorite tv show. Would we have found commonalities outside of our dad? You were just nine years older, but you’d have remembered the 70s like I do the 80’s.
What was your favorite car? Were you a car person? Were you kind? Was your childhood good or bad? What about growing up? 61 years is alot of time on this earth (though far too short still).
You ever get married? Have kids? Were you straight, gay, non-binary? Were you comfortable with that?
Reading your obituary hit me alot harder than I expected. For all the fear and what ifs, you were still my brother and i really wanted to get to at least talk to you and see if there was a bridge there still, see if we might have the chance to reconnect after all these years.
I hope your life was good. I hope your passing wasn’t painful. I’ll see you again one day…
Ahoy!

Fresh start
What was time?
The span of sunrises and sunsets that had passed since they returned from the Veil was something Wieda was oblivious to. She really had no idea how long it had been.
Initially, they returned to the Carriage House. It was home after all. But after everything, it no longer felt as warm. More so with others still away and not knowing if they would return.
They tried spending time on the 'Heart but that too lost its luster. The ship was badly in need of service, repairs and such that were beyond their skills.
Well, that wasn't quite true. Larkin could and would puzzle it out or just replace what was no longer working. But the truth was, Wieda's heart was no longer in the 'Heart.
The ship was drydocked in Boralus, the two of them living above the Four points offices and relaxing. An extended break and recovery period really.
Business was still good. Ships still sailed, both the companies and her own. But she'd lost all the personal clients again. Not to mention any funds left in trust had long since dried up.
They had spent months? A year? Longer? across the veil and only recently did Wieda realize she never went looking for loved ones passed. In her time there, finding her Larkin and the rest of the pack had been more important than souls long dead.
Even when she was finally reunited, there was no desire. Those who mattered were there with her. So how could she now go back to sea? Leave for months on end?
That was the root of her disquiet she realized. She'd lost the desire to wander, to be apart. It was time to settle down, once and for all. Like her Da had done.
So she scrapped the ship out. Sold it for its timbers and metals and cannons and anything else that could be scavenged from it. She kept her personal things from her cabin and the furnishing there in, but the rest was quickly gone.
The coin from that would cover a small house for the two of them. Once with a workshop and a loft and a big kitchen. With enough left over to buy a small sloop, just for sailing around the Sound and such. Scratch the itch so to speak.
They'd begin anew again by settling down. It was time to start a fresh chapter in their book of life.

Sea Shanties 101: Let’s explore
TYPES OF SHANTIES
If you’ve any experience in sea shanties, you’ve probably noticed they don’t all sound the same. Some are slow, some are fast, and some are just downright sad! Well there’s method behind the melody, and I’m here to tell you all about it!
A shanty frequently contains a CALL, which is what the shantyman would sing out, essentially the verses of the song, and the RESPONSE, which is what the men would sing back. For example in Haul Away Joe: the call is “Louis was the king of France before the revolution,” and the response is “heave away, haul away Joe.”
One of the first things to keep in mind is that shanties were used most frequently during tasks that required most of the crew. I’m now going to separate these types of work shanties into categories:
CAPSTAN SHANTIES: these shanties were used for repetitive work that was sustained, such as raising the ship’s anchor at the capstan. Examples? Randy Dandy-Oh, Drunken Sailor, Eliza Lee, Barrett’s Privateers (though this was written long after the age of sail!)
HALYARD SHANTIES: sung during tasks that took a very long time and required a break for a breath before the men started up again, such as hoisting a sail. Examples? Blow the Man Down, Leave Her Johnny, Hanging Johnny (Johnny really took the piss huh)
PUMPING SHANTIES: let’s hope you didnt have to do a lot of pumping! Wooden ships were prone to leaking and so pumping out the water was necessary but tiresome work below decks. Examples? Santiana, Pump Shanty (surprise there)
SHORT-HAUL SHANTIES: for quick work, like shortening sails! Examples? Haul Away Joe, Paddy Doyle’s Boots, Haul on the Bowline
There’s some of our task shanties! Now why don’t we go below and see what our off-duty men are getting up to?
Why, they’re singing FO'C'SLE SHANTIES! These shanties are stories of life at sea, the work they’d done, the places they’d been, they can tell you a lot about a sailor’s life. Examples? Rolling Down to Old Maui, Ben Backstay, All for me Grog
Fun! How about those far away in the polar seas hunting whales? Well I’m glad you asked because this is where we encounter WHALING SHANTIES! And yes, you guessed it, this is where Wellerman comes in! Other examples include Bonnie Ship the Diamond, The Greenland Whaler Fisheries
Now of course the most important rule of sea shanties is to have fun with your buds! Be sure to tell everyone you know about your newly-acquired shanty knowledge!
@mando-ah-damn I think this truly brilliant post answers your question, if not then get back to me.
Treatment of a wound from a Sabre cut
Alexander Jack, who was surgeon when HMS Shannon captured the USS Chesapeake on 1 June 1813, off Boston, kept a very clear and detailed Surgeon’s Journal. (ADM 101/120/3 pp.14-15)
This records the details of all the injuries received by the crew in the battle and although the majority are not from sword wounds, Captain Broke of the Shannon received a severe injury. This is what the surgeon recorded:
P BV Broke, Esq,. Captain.
Received a deep cut, from a sabre, on the left parietal bone, extending from the top of the head, in a direction towards the ear. Both tables of the skull are penetrated for at least three inches in length. There are also several con- tused wounds immediately above the left ear – and one on the right side of the head, inflicted by the butt end of a musket, the integuments are detached for some extent, but not exposing the bone. – These wounds were received on board the U.S. ship Chesapeake where they received a partial dressing: immediately after, Capt. Broke was removed to this ship, at which time he was very much exhausted, having lost a vast quantity of blood. Pulse very weak and small - said that his right arm was broken, but on inspection there was not the slightest appearance of injury. The sabre wound was cleaned, and closed by means of adhesive straps. Simple dressings applied to the wound on the right side. From the debility following the great loss of blood, bloodletting unnecessary. An opiate was given and the patient left to rest.
2nd Has not rested well during the night. A considerable discharge of blood has taken place, in the form of a constant oozing. The integuments of the scalp swelled and very painful. Headache. Pulse small and soft. Straps removed and simple dressings applied. A saline purgative given and low diet ordered.
3rd Remains nearly in the same state, except that the headache is in- creased. There is still a considerable oozing of blood from the wound. Dressings as before. Saline purgative repeated.
4th Some purulent discharge from the wound. Not much blood oozing now. Dressings as before.
5th Discharge tinged with blood, and increased. Less headache and swelling of the integuments about the wound. The debility is verconsiderable. Dressings as before. Saline purgative repeated.
6th Discharge diminishing and sores looking well. The parts contused are very much discoloured There still remains a considerable degree of tumefaction . about the scalp, with soreness to the slightest touch. Dressings applied as before. Weather calm. (?) PM we arrived in Halifax Harbour, when Capt. Broke was immediately removed to the house of Commissioner the Hon. P Wodehouse. The care of the case devolved upon Dr. Rowland, the Surgeon, Royal Naval Hospital; Mr Duncan, Surgeon to the Forces at Halifax and to myself.
Captain Broke did continue his recovery but never commanded a ship again. He subsequently was made a Baron for this action and received several other awards.
Rigging on a Ship
A sailing ship consists of much more than just a hull and sails.
The rigging on l’Hermione, a replica of a french frigate of 1780 (x)
At first glance, it all looks confusing, but a sailor knew exactly what he was looking at (and so do they today). Now there are two main differences in the functions of different types of rigging. On the one hand there is the standing rigging
The standing rigging (x)
Once the huge masts were inserted through the decks and base fixed ti the hull, fixed rigging was required both to the hold the masts in position, but laso to serve as the means for the crew to ascend the asts quickly and safely. Standing rigging denoted that it was fixed and remaind static and it could be tarred to help to preserve it, hence its usual black and oily appearance. Most warships and huge merchant vessels carried two or three tall masts to accommodate the huge area of canvas required to propel the ship at speed. These masts were held by the shrouds. They run to to top of each of these masts to hold them firmly in position with horizontal ropes, known as ratlines, used to form a ladder for the crew to ascend and descend easily. Other rigging running forward and backwards, know as forestays and backstays, stopped the mast movng forward or back. There were also lashings fixing the bowsprit securely to the main bow structure. All of this constituted the standing rigging.
The Running Rigging
The running rigging (x)
This rigging controlled the yarddarms and the direction of the sails. They comprised both the ropes attaching the yardarms to the mast and others which allowed the yardarm to be raised or lowered. Other lines held the yard in a horizontal position and others allowed it to swing horizontally to postion the sails so as to maximise the wind engery. Sails were tied on to the yardarms and rigging was attached to each corner of the sails to allow them to be hauled tighter or loosened. Other rigging provided footropes for the men whilst they worked the sails on the yardarms high above the deck and rope known as clewlines and buntlines allowed the area of canvas to be reduced by shortening the amount of sail out. Other ropework could be rigged for the use of booms when useing fore and aft sails, for putting up an extra sail as a screen in excessive sunshine, for antiboarding nets, to haul casks up the side and so on.
Every ship carried miles and miles of rope without which it would not work properly and it took years for an officer and Sailor to have the experience to see through and understand this complex system. A ship of the line, by the way, had about 43.5 km of rigging and about 800 pulley blocks.

CURRENTLY CRAVING: I have no idea. RL is really hectic right this moment and when it settles down in a couple weeks, I will suddenly be an empty nester. I'm not ready for that yet mentally.

Thoughts on graves...
Wieda walked through the city, quieter than she remembered yet still bustling. Familiar faces were absent but she had been gone a long time. She cut behind the Church, casting a wary eye at some group wearing far too much red and rather specific iconography and not being bothered over much by the Guard. She sighed, turning to walk down into the graveyard to distance herself and her thoughts turned to other matters.
Why were people hung up on the idea of visiting the grave of the departed? Why did they feel the need to place the remains of their dearly departed into a box, be it wood, tin, or something else; dig a hole in the ground and place said box in the ground, then put a marker above to let everyone know there’s a body down there?
It seemed to be a human notion more than anyone else. She didn’t recall ever seeing a dwarven or gnomish graveyard nor an elven one for that matter. She wasn’t sure about draenei but looking out across the markers, at least in Stormwind, all the markers were for humans.
You’d think people would have learned after the scourge, right? How many bodies rose to attack the living from plots just like this one?
To be fair, she herself had taken the time to visit where her folks were interred, put there by her uncle she assumed. But as he too was missing and had been, she really didn’t know who had done that or if there really were remains down there.
The more she thought on it as she walked, the more she thought burial at sea was The route to take. But it really depended, didn’t it. If the waters where the body was dropped weren’t teaming with scavengers, it could be ripe pickings for a necromancer. Or if the waters were too cold and preserved things…
No, after returning from the Veil, knowing now what she did, a pyre was the best way to go. Not that she had any intentions of facing that hurdle soon. But she would be sure to put it into her Will.
You Are Not The Problem
Because I’ve seen it come up a few different times today…
The actions of the total scumbags at Activision/Blizzard do not reflect on you as a player or consumer. You are not a bad person for having supported them or their franchises, and the allegations coming to light have no bearing on you as a person.
Do not let good memories, many of us who have years and years of them, be ruined by what this tiny number of people did. The overwhelming majority of the people who made the games and material you love are good people who love what they do and enjoy making something cool that people get so attached to.
You as a player did not know, could not have known, and cannot be held or hold yourself responsible. You cannot stop what you never knew was happening, and unlike what some of the aforementioned scumbags have claimed, we actually did not know. Every high-horse-riding nitwit who comes along and says “well you should have because it’s everywhere” can just sit down and shut up right now. That’s now how it works. Assumption is not knowledge. Suspicion is not knowledge.
Now we know. Now we point our collective crosshairs at the people who actually deserve it. Not ourselves, not each other, and certainly not the employees trying to make it better.
Needed to hear this.
Sailmaker, by unknown,19th century
He is working here on an old sail. What unfortunately cannot be seen here is that thin or worn sails were often given a coating of wax or oil to renew their effectiveness. The treatment itself was called a “dressing down” and the term eventually came to mean a reprimand or admonishment given to a subordinate in hopes of effecting better service.
