For a long time now I’ve been working on a world, story and characters, that I’ve had in my head since I was like 12, and have been mulling over sharing it for a while. Took me too long to realise that I could still share it even if it isn’t perfectly realised yet, so that’s what I’ve decided to do!
The dream would be to make a series in some medium or possibly an animated pilot episode some day. I have a script hard in the works and some pre-production already, and I have no idea where all this is gonna go, but for now I’m happy to just share my passion project. I really hope you enjoy this journey with me! 🚀🪐
Welcome to the project blog for Another Planet!
Another Planet is an action adventure story about Cally, a human, and Jak, an alien.
In a universe where human beings are considered an endangered and protected species by extra-terrestrial authorities, one girl accidentally discovers the intergalactic reality she was never meant to see. Cally, a timid teenager and amateur astronomer, finds herself thrust from her life on earth into the dangerous expanse of space by Jak, a renegade alien on the run who never asked for a stowaway.
She has to find the courage within herself to fight back against monsters, aliens, authorities and her own self doubt to uncover the truth about her role in the universe at large and finally find her way back home.
It’s a story of unlikely friends, cool gadgets, found family, and an overarching story of cosmic conspiracies (with a little wonderment for space thrown in). In her efforts to find her way home, Cally uncovers hidden truths and discovers the strength to choose her own path. As the main characters hop from world to world, varied and extreme environments throw challenges their way, whilst the conflict between them throws its own.
Speaking of main characters!! Lemmi introduce you!
Cally: An amateur astronomer and anxious 16 year old girl who can barely survive a driving lesson, let alone face the dangerous cosmos beyond Earth. Completely catapulted out of her comfort zone, she desperately wants to get back home to solid ground, but every day in space is a fight between her insatiable curiosity for the cosmos and her debilitating fear of the unknown.
Appearance: Average teenage height, a bit stocky, with a round face and strawberry-blonde hair tied into a messy bun. Her bright, round eyes have bags under them. She wears a blue jumpsuit, thick in material, and boots good for traversing wilderness.
Jak: An insectoid, alien criminal who’s been escaping capture for over 10 Solar years. He’s confident, charismatic, cunning, and a bit of a showoff, often getting himself into trouble due to his ego and indifference to abject peril. Travelling without much of a strategy, just enough to avoid arrest, he journeys solo with absolute confidence that everything will work out for him. Underneath however, he’s running cowardly from his past and avoiding ever facing it again.
Appearance: Tall, slender, big eyes, light grey skin and dark, sharp hair and 'fangy' teeth. Dressed in what looks like tattered uniform with the sleeves torn off, baggy combat trousers and high black boots. What seem to look like weapons -long, black metal blades- protrude from his elbows. (His design/race is partly inspired by my love for insects, which are always my fave episode in a nature documentary series, after deep sea creatures lul.)
Thrown together by circumstance, Cally is desperate to get back home, whilst Jak would eagerly abandon her to get back to solo adventuring. It’s only when he realises just how lethal the consequences of being found to have brought a human into space (accidental or not) does he decide it's within his best interest to help Cally get back to Earth. ASAP, and without being found out, of course.
As the two navigate their situation and solution, their journey doesn’t come without butting heads and petty squabbles. Despite being brash and abrasive, Jak’s confidence can rub off on Cally, helping her to grow a lot on this journey. She might not only learn that there’s more strength in her than she knows, but there might also be more to this whole situation than she first thought. Jak meanwhile learns from his human ankle-tag to slow down and think, take more responsibility, learn from his mistakes, and might one day be able to look his past in the eye again.
I’m a big fan of a slow-burn friendship of enemies-to-besties. Two characters thrown together by circumstance, whose flaws and virtues clash and compliment, that slowly mould each other into their best selves, and eventually becomes something unbreakable- that’s what I’m aiming for with these two and this story of intergalactic mystery.
This story is inspired by my love for space, cosmology, scifi and my favourite videogame series growing up - Ratchet & Clank. I’m also heavily influenced by the storytelling of Trollhunters, another big inspiration behind Another Planet. So if that interests you, I hope you enjoy what I’m cooking !!🍳
I’ll be sharing more art and characters soon, I hope you enjoyed reading and look forward to more!💖
