my favorite species of springtail chose to suddenly reappear in an old moss cup!

observe them in their majesty! they are Sminthurinus quadrimaculatus bimaculatus

sweet little sub-millimeter creatures grazing on mold

I like that the last two parts of their scientific name means "four-spot two-spot"

exactly! I like calling them the Two-spotted Four-spotted Springtail.

I’ve only found the nominate subspecies with all four spots once, in the wild, and it instantly disappeared as globulars do

It is baby season right now. A lot of babies are being born right now and people keep bringing them into the sanctuary. Sometimes its best to leave them alone.

Also please check the park you're at for local regulations which are usually posted on signs either around ponds, at the park entrance, or online! Here in Canada if a CO catches you feeding wild birds you can get a pretty hefty fine. In my experience it's better to let enjoy than to interact with.

A pair of Chickadees has decided to make the green Twoholer a home and the female started building yesterday 😍 I have not really seen or heard a lot from the House Wrens so maybe they decided to go elsewhere this year. I do have a Wren guard ready, and I added a shroud to reduce the hole size so no larger bird can get in either. I have never seen Chickadees nest, so this would be delightful. The focus of the camera is set higher up, so image quali will improve once the nest is built.
