Home Program with Pittsylvania Pet Center
William E. Schuiling is the owner of Brown Automotive Group Ltd. in Fairfax, Virginia, the largest privately owned car dealership in the mid-Atlantic. A philanthropist, William Schuiling also donates to animal care charities such as Homeward Trails. Homeward Trails’ mission is to match dogs and cats from under-resourced shelters with loving homes in the mid-Atlantic region. In so doing, it reduces the euthanasia rate at shelters while opening up new spaces at the shelters to serve other animals. The nonprofit also accepts animals from owners who can no longer care for their pets. These cases increased after the COVID-19 pandemic prompting Homeward Trails to partner with the Pittsylvania Pet Center (PPC) to launch the Home To A Home program. The Home To A Home program gives pet owners who can no longer care for their animals the opportunity to give their pets directly to foster homes, preventing an influx of animals at shelters. Southern Virginia, where PPC serves, generally has much fewer foster homes for pets compared to Northern Virginia. Hence, animal shelters like PPC get overwhelmed finding foster and adoptive homes for pets. In addition, animal shelters, no matter how safe and clean they are, are stressful environments for many pets. They also pose a number of health risks. Through the Home To A Home program, Homeward Trails ensures owners in Southern Virginia who can no longer care for their pets can move them to foster homes in Northern Virginia directly.
