ofrenas:
time ticked away like effortless motions on a clock . blue gaze has pinpointed him from across a room ; entire body feeling numb . there was nothing but a threshold of a doorway caught between them ; and her chest bellowed in on itself . stunned , blue eyes deafening any conversation between him and the medic . it wasn’t possible —– guilt touched the back of her neck , up to her eyes . he had been this close , all this time ? she didn’t look hard enough , she didn’t look long enough . it’s swallowed in the back of her throat , tasted like crimson . eyes fluttered shut , tight .. willing the apparition to go away . with the light of his voice , she’ll open again . still here . “you’re dead .” she finally mustered , but it cracked . hands instinctively found her sides but her boots were anchored to the floor . tears burned , they stung baby blues and appeared them brighter around the halo of scarlet . lips pursed , to keep them from trembling ; and she speaks again . “y-you’re dead .” it’s the same mask , but only this time ; shells have cracked , and visions of the past rippled the water beneath her feet . confusion laced her brows , and reality struck hard . the medic —- giving report . the vague utter of a leader , who suddenly sounded all too familiar . it hallowed her chest , and broke open a heart that had long been beaten and bruised . “where the hell were you—” and anger , snapped in an instant ; not meant to lash out , just .. overwhelmed . “i waited , at the cabin - i waited and -” memories , like whiplash . and her eyes shut , fingertips running through her hair ; a ring still left behind on her hand , for sentiment . “i’m sorry-” she turns on her heels , pacing ; trying to gather her thoughts .
Not for one second did Will believe that Rena was dead. Maybe that was partially because he couldn’t have handled it if he really believed she was. These days, Will hung onto hope when maybe he shouldn’t have. He wholeheartedly believed that if they created a cure for the zombie disease, it would help to save the world and those that they had lost. There was also a chance that it would save them from the toxin that was starting to spread. Some people called the idealism stupid, but Will needed it to continue seeing a point in simply surviving. Similarly, although he’d lost his whole, entire family, he always reminded himself that there was a chance that one day, Will would find Rena. He had never seen her dead body, and never seen her face deteriorated like a zombie’s. All of those signs pointed to Rena being alive.
But Rena being alive wasn’t that simple. The emotion overwhelmed Will and he could see on her face that the emotion was overwhelming Rena, too. Her voice was cracking, her eyes welled, and Will swallowed back tears as he hands began to shake. “I’m not dead,” he said quietly, reaching out to touch her hand. He hoped that it was a sign that he was alive, that his warmth would simultaneously convince and comfort her. “I’m here, helping to lead the Saints,” Will said unnecessarily, voice thick.
When Rena’s anger came, Will forced himself to remain calm for the two of them. He was equally as emotional, but one of them had to be reasonable for answers to come. His hands balled into fists at his side, but no matter how hard he tried, Will couldn’t look away from Rena. “I came as quickly as I could,” Will promised. “I was deep in the mountains, Rena, it took some time. When I got there… uh, people were dead,” he said. Will, despite the years that had passed, had never managed to admit that he killed his family to survive. It was what they would have wanted, but it was never that simple to say. “Don’t apologize,” Will said quietly, watching Rena as she paced. “You can feel however you need too. This is shocking and confusing and everything I’ve ever hoped for.”
After a moment, Will decided telling his story would be best. “I came down the mountains to the cabin and everyone there had… uh, not done well. I left and tried to find my mom, but they were gone too, and then I just started traveling, hoping I’d find you. When I never did, I made some friends along the way and started leading the Saints. That’s it.”
