Will documenting his journey of self-discovery when he gets to NYC with a little sketchbook that lives in his pocket, until the edges are worn soft, and a Polaroid camera. It makes him think about his brother sometimes--on the rare occasions when he tries to capture a scene, instead of just snapping a candid shot, and he remembers watching Jonathan do that, or going through the photos later and seeing what he's preserved, and how sometimes Jonathan would show him his box of photos and let him pick the cool ones to keep. It's different from Jonathan's process--Jonathan wouldn't shoot Polaroid--but he likes that, too, and Jonathan happily puts Will's shitty photos on his fridge. But the important thing is that he has this proof of his freedom, this life he's building, that he can surround himself with when he needs to remind himself that he is loved and his life is full and he is moving forward.

omg okay i always wondered where the lucky cigarette thing came from and I just learned that it started from wwi soldiers who would say that if they made it to the end of the pack and got to smoke the lucky cigarette it meant they would survive the war. I do kind of see Will getting a little bit into basketball for Lucas. Like, yeah, Lucas definitely pursued the team more for safety than because of a genuine interest in the sport, but I'm sure he got to enjoy it and appreciate it on its own merits, and he keeps it up after high school. And Will sometimes goes to games with him, when they hang out, and it's fun, and it gets to where he can hold up his end of a conversation about it, and he'll watch it occasionally. And they both know which players he finds hot.
