People who hate Elain but love Nesta are so odd to me. I saw this video straight up bashing elain, and the fact that had so many likes is baffling. The person ranted about how Elain could’ve done more in the cabin. She could’ve planted and grown food. And how Nesta is the only one blamed for Feyre going into the woods and she only ever stayed out of Feyre’s way.
First of all, Elain and Nesta could’ve both done more to help Feyre. That’s undeniable. Neither sister had the obligation to provide or care for their family, but as Elain and Nesta were in their twenties at the start of the series, they did have the obligation to at least try to provide for themselves. And yes, maybe elain could’ve grown food. But you know what? Nesta was the most educated of all the sisters. People love to say how smart and cunning she is. If she truly wanted to find a job, she could’ve. You’re telling me that she spent years being educated, building connections to get married to a wealthy man, and yet couldn’t somehow use those connections to find a job?
But truthfully, I don’t think many people still care about how they didn’t do enough in the cabin. It’s the fact that Nesta was verbally abusive to Feyre. Elain didn’t make things easier on Feyre but Nesta purposefully made things harder for Feyre - which is the reason why so many people dislike Nesta and not Elain.
The reason people dislike Nesta and not elain is because Nesta has remained abusive to Feyre and others around her until the last 10 percent of her book. Elain never slut shamed Feyre. Elain never mocked Feyre for being an ignorant peasant. Elain never weaponized Feyre’s potential death/miscarriage to hurt her knowing that any undue stress could trigger her labor. Elain never threatened to slit Feyre’s throat. And elain never blamed Nesta for their father’s death, never compared Nesta to a dog.
Yeah, elain could’ve done more to help Feyre. She could’ve planted. But ever since then, she has been making amends. She was the one who allowed the queens into her home when Nesta was going to turn them away, knowing that if news got out, her engagement would be broken and her reputation ruined. Elain has been trying to be a good sister. She has apologized, truly apologized. She didn’t make excuses, she didn’t scoff at Feyre’s trauma, she didn’t make Nesta’s trauma about herself. She took accountability, and better yet, she actually changed.
Say what you want about elain, but the truth is she has never sought to maliciously hurt her sisters. She has acknowledged that she has unintentionally hurt her sisters and has apologized. She has gone out of her way to grow and do better. She has been traumatized, kidnapped, abused, turned into a fae against her will, and transported into an unknown land full of strange creatures and yet she has remained kind throughout it all.
Im so sick and tired of this “elain could have planted food” discourse, no she couldn’t have. The reasons were already insinuated in the book. They hold onto this one “useless” act of Elains and ignore the countless of times where she was useful like warning Feyre before Tamlin lunged or locating the suriel during the war. It feels so immature and just pathetic to keep holding onto this grudge against elain.
And you’re right anon, its not about what the sisters didn’t do, its about their behaviour. Elain was never malicious. She never had ill-intentions. She wasn’t jealous or critical of Feyre. At most, you can say she was an airhead in her own world. Nesta however? Went out of her way to be cruel. It was mentioned that whenever Elain would praise Feyre, Nesta would scoff at it. You have one sister who isn’t intentionally hurtful whilst the other is.
And as you pointed out: Elain acknowledged their mistake. And from that moment on, has been nothing but good towards Feyre and her family. Why wouldn’t she be liked? She hasn’t given anyone a reason to dislike her, even Feyre didn’t put emphasis on the fact Elain didnt help out much initially.
Nesta was volatile from the beginning. She was rude and mean towards Feyre and that later extended to the IC.
I often see people hate Elain because she “gets away” with being useless whereas Nesta doesn’t, but that isn’t the case. Nesta actively is mean so Feyre’s family will obviously defend Feyre. Elain is kind and lovely, exactly what are they going to hold against her when they can see her making amends with Feyre? Treat others how you want to be treated. Nesta was horrible, she got that treatment back. Elain is kind, she got that treatment back.
Its not about who did more or should’ve done more. Its about the behaviour and how that reflects on the way they’re treated. These people cannot handle the fact Elain is loved. She is a good person even if she didn’t plant vegetables in an unstable enviornment. Imagine after everything Nesta has done, someone calls her useless because she didn’t help out in book 1? Its stupid yet despite all the help from Elain…people still can’t move past acotar? Where she was intentionally meant to be useless for the narrative and story to unfold in the way Maas wanted it to.
I just find it so juvenile and stupid when elain antis keep bringing up this planting food take. It really does show how subtext can be completely lost on people.
There’s such a beautiful, pure strength to remain kind and hopeful after enduring events that would have made people lose their minds. Elain represents that strength. She had every right to be a b*tch yet she remained sweet. She chose kindness. Elain Archeron is a strong character, whose unfortunately only defined by what she hasn’t done. Its such a shame.
