Disclaimer: Nothing being said here is directed at my mutuals, but rather something I think is important to speak on since this is a correct statement and another endemic issue, not just in the rpc, but in fandom as a whole and since I write popular cis male canons; I would just like to take a moment to validate this issue that’s rife amongst our femme oc friends as I have experienced it from the opposite end of the spectrum. So with that said:
let’s get into it:
As someone who has written popular male canons here for five years (the other being Bucky Barnes) I can say confidently this is exactly true. There is a distinct kind of privilege people who write popular male canons enjoy that the rest of the rpc is not offered. Here are some things I’ve noticed in my experiences:
It is true that we are required far less than anyone else to have as much information as everyone else who are including, but not limited to — other canons which are usually femme canons, lgbtq+ canons, and canons of color. God forbid they have the creativity and courage to write a character that is all three. This is made significantly more difficult if someone chooses to make them an oc. Particularly a femme oc.
On my end, I have never once, ever struggled for followers or engagement. I was witch hunted by four big blogs for six months and I still do not struggle for engagement or followers. I have never wanted for a ship, felt lonely on the dash. I’m not saying everyone writing a popular male canon doesn’t struggle, but the gap between the ease of engagement for us and everyone else is incredibly large.
I have watched viteoublies start out as a new multi in the rpc, almost a year ago, to the community she’s built today and it take me 90 days or less to achieve the same thing with 80% less the effort than she puts into everything she does. This applies to countless people writing femme ocs, many of whom I have and/or do write with. This is a repeated pattern across all fandom rpcs.
Femme ocs are regarded with brutal suspicions ranging from being self inserts, collecting canons or fcs, being overpowered, mary-sues, using their character for trying to date people in the rpc, living vicariously through their characters, looking for an “internet boyfriend” — and yeah, I’ve seen that to be true about femme ocs. I’ve also seen that true to be true about popular male canons. I’ve seen that to be true from every type of character you can write, from every type of person with every type of background. There is no “this group does it more than the other”. Fandom is a weird space and the people in it can reflect that, it’s just being in any fandom and fandom adjacent spaces, be it rp or fanfic or just fandom discourse on social media — it’s a strange and chaotic place and those accusations are not isolated to femme ocs in rp, they’re not even the majority in rp.
With that said — the raw deal given to femme ocs in the rpc is most perpetuated by people writing popular canons. Popular male canons perpetuate a lot of negative stereotypes of femme ocs by constantly reaffirming those suspicions of femme ocs to other people. The vagues about being hounded for a ship when it’s just the crime of a femme character following them. I’ve been hounded for ships. It happens the most on Bucky. They’re pretty easy to spot and again, it’s not isolated to, or even by a majority, femme ocs. I see people make hardline, wild assumptions about femme ocs based on small instances: An example is a friend shared how they told a parter writing a canon that part of their oc’s lore was drawn off a personal experience but adapted to fit the story and character. This is a common writing practice used by writers and authors everywhere for centuries. But this canon partner? Made vagues for days about her with the accusation she was a self insert. This is unhinged to do or even think.
People sort of ‘collecting’ femme ocs to give the impression they support and write with them, but then never engage. Sort of like making these people do a dance or performance to earn attention from the canon writer. No one deserves to be treated like this unless they’re auditioning for a fucking circus. We’re all busy and in and out, but days of engaging with their personal friends, other canons — while ocs, and again mostly femme ocs, are just looked over.
There is more of a silent expectation that femme ocs interact first and it is often on them to carry plots and ideas. They need to have a dash heavy presence, engage with people’s posts, reblog their promos, write starters — I have seen ocs of all character types write a starter and then the canon person’s reply is like for an entirely different story. Like they didn’t even read the oc’s post. Again, we have all experienced this, but the amount of times I have seen ocs of all sorts subjected to this is pretty wild.
In my experience I have had and seen more toxic exchanges with canon blogs than I have ever seen with ocs. Some of my dearest and most loved ships are femme ocs and ocs in general. Ocs are raw stories and people that often hold no stake in the canon sources of your own character, and are often more than happy to follow your lead. Where when we write our canons together we are comprising different parts of the source material and adapting to each other’s takes on the verse. More often than not, oc writers are refreshing takes in our dusty old canon takes or they give us an opportunity to put our characters into places and scenarios we maybe would have never otherwise considered. Yes there’s going to be toxic people writing femme ocs, but they’re not writing femme ocs because they’re toxic, they’re a toxic person who happens to be writing a femme oc.
And even if you are more drawn to canons, then at least use that platform to give ocs a leg up and reblog their promos because maybe one of your followers (someone like me, hello) would love to interact with them or just the exposure. When they post headcanon question memes — drop a question. You can literally copy and paste most of those into an ask box. Like their headcanon posts. If you go so far to be mutuals, at least engage when you’re here. Be honest and say you aren’t sure what to plot, but go into that conversation with something you like about their character(s). Make any effort and stop regarding their effort as desperate when the entire system in the rpc has been rigged against them, where people putting in less effort are receiving far more benefit with far less stress. Again, I also write a popular male canon and we do have very specific issues we have to deal with, but it is nothing remotely compared to what, well, anyone who isn’t us, and that’s just the honest truth. This isn’t at anyone specific, this is genuinely what I’ve observed over the course of my five years here, done in all different ways by all kinds of people in all different types of fandoms.
The anger and frustration they feel is valid. When a femme oc says in their rules that character is hard to ship with, what a lot of these writers are telling you is that they are not willing to compromise on their character. That the rpc has told them through experience and heartache that people often don’t take quickly or warmly to their oc, and that the only success they had in ships were compromising on that character and feeling miserable, so they choose a small dedicated few versus feeling creatively hollow for the more reach.
And almost always in this scenarios this was coming from partners I was actively in a ship with, shocked that they had such little success. It was because people didn’t invest in the characters these people were writing. Femme ocs are often placed in this position to fawn over the canon, basically using the oc as a means to let the canon shine. I know this to be true by how I’m approached, because I read their bios and you can see where they’re compromising in a way to make sure I don’t just drop them.
This also deeply affects people trying to write canons as trans, who barely get engagement on the same canons being written as cis. So there is a telling issue here, too.
And to the people sending some of these femme ocs with the audacity to question them on if they’re so difficult to ship with then why do they have so many ships and are they lying?
Because who even decides what is a lot? And have you bothered to read the exchanges? Do you think perhaps it’s because someone showed earnest interest without making them jump through hoops of fire just to prove they’re worthy of canon attention? Have you considered that this is perhaps a fucking skill issue?
And to all my canon mutuals on here? I think you guys are wonderful. To anyone reading? If they’re canons on my blog, they’re not going to treat you like a barfbag 🫶
And to all the ocs on my blog — you are raw creative talent. I feel flattered and humbled that you rolled the dice on a canon marvel blog. That’s brave af given the chaos that comes out of our end of the rpc and I love you for giving me the opportunity 🫶
hey trash. i'm not trying to be mean here, but i want to genuinely ask you, person to person. do you use ai to help write your posts? it's pretty clear to me that they're ai assisted for a variety of reasons.
shiiiiiiiiit i typed up a whole ass reply to this and then said fuck it i haven’t had enough coffee:
1. don’t fucking start off something with “i’m just asking” then launch into an accusation.
2. i will literally spend a day screen sharing with you nerds because i am, in fact, not a bunch of raccoons in a coat typing, i am just me and anyone who writes with me long terms knows it/has witnessed it/i am so tired of people being accused of this shit.
3. have been so firmly against ai slop and the lack of creative wasteland from the jump.
4. don’t be a dick. come off anon. conversate person to person. when the fuck did we get here that we couldn’t talk to one another as fucking writers.
sorry if that come out unpolished but it’s early in the morning and this was the wrong foot to start the day on.
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN SPOT AI & OTHER FANTASTIC LIES TO TELL YOURSELF
Let’s get into it —
Being on Anon. Now let’s be real, there are actual reasons to be on anon and we’ve all got anon hate like this — and hate like this does distract from real reasons why some people would need to go anon. However this was by no means a reason to be on anon. They could have just as easily reached out on a burner, protecting their identity while also sparking purposeful conversation that could actually be responded to. I think we can tell pretty distinctly this person had no intention of constructive conversation when they start off with “hey trash”
I have seen this mun and their blog around the rpc for years and years. Their writing is consistent and I only know just by osmosis of sharing a lot of mutuals and being in the same rp spaces. They have been writing on this blog since before genAI was something we ever knew would be a fucking problem. So whoever is making this anon just self reported to everyone on the dash that they’re new here or being driven by some kind of petty jealousy or similar.
There is no longer anything you can use to identify AI. To be able to do that you would first need to know the other person deeply well over the course of a significant period of time to be able to register the pattern of their writing. You can suspect all you want. You have no proof. Which brings me to another point — stop forcing the rpc to capitulate to your OPINIONS of other people. Show up with the requisite reciepts or shut up? To everyone else WHO ADHERES to this: stop. Stop excusing your friends. Yes your friends could be lying to you. Your friends could have been lied to by someone else. That friend of a friend of a friend could have been lied to. Most of you are out here playing a game of 4D Telephone but acting like you’ve just been hand delivered a divine gospel of truth. No. You have not. You have to understand this. I question my friends when they tell me something. Not because I think they’re lying to me, but because how do I know they haven’t been lied to? How do I know they didn’t misunderstand something? I won’t know until I ask. The issue with genAI? You’re never going to have proof in this space unless you have someone confessing to it directly. If you’re using an AI tracker? FUCKING. STOP. I find the people using AI trackers are more guilty of aiding to AI than people using AI, because when you feed our writing into AI trackers? YOU ARE GIVING THE AI OUR FUCKING WRITING. So now AI will register full bodies of human written text as AI. So the tool that maybe could have helped has been destroyed by people desperate to catch other people using AI.
Why is the first step to shame people? Why does the rpc think that shaming, blocking, vaguing, and dogpiling are ever going to help? Let me break this down for everyone — whether it’s AI, or accusing someone of some phobia or -ism, where are the conversations to assess if your accusation is exactly that? I’ve seen people, myself included, harassed and stalked for the most BOGUS claims, stir up everyone’s anger and paranoia all because they either started a witch hunt because of someone they didn’t like, in my situation it was because I had a complete stranger blocked and they came unglued. I see one now, actively going around in DMs and disco, about someone being falsely accused of bigotry so the accuser can hide their actual (and can be proven with factual evidence) racism. So you see friends — no matter what you’re trying to callout, if you never spoken to them, if you never assessed any information? Then the point isn’t resolution, the point is the cruelty. The point is the shame. The point is the clout you think it’ll earn or lose you. And with AI? Then that’s your ONLY point if you can’t even have the intellect and maturity to hold those conversations yourself.
The witch hunting in the rpc needs to stop. I want anyone to tell me how this has helped? All I have seen and heard from people in my very short time in the tumblr rpc (5yrs) is how it has bulldozed a creative space and left people terrified, angry, apathetic, exhausted — everything but a feeling of creativity. I am begging you all, stop witch hunting. I don’t care if someone says “this person is Satan” they still need proof. They still need credible evidence. Tell me what is to be gained by doing shit like this anon? That’s not a conversation. That’s an attempt to make someone feel small for no other reason than for the sake of cruelty and bitterness.
And I cannot stress enough, those of you who take your friends at their word with nothing other than ‘trust me’ — you are absolutely contributing to this issue. Because who knows who this anon is, right? Now when they go and slip into the ears of their friends and say “psspsspsss I think they use AI” how is anyone able to defend themselves? They get blocked, vagued, ignored and have no idea why, but the rpc has been coded in such a way, people can’t go ask why. People end friendships that spanned years because someone with enough clout told them a bad thing about someone else.
Why? Why would you do this to people? To your community? To yoursleves?
These actions aren’t isolated, they aren’t just something happening on your blog or dash. These behaviors, status quos, silent expectations, they fuse into the social fabric. They do it so well that it becomes coded into the social behaviors, that I guarantee a lot of you don’t even realize anymore. It became an abusive and oppressive system to attack people.
Now you have people, like this anon, who feel not just brave enough to do things like this, but entitled in doing it.
Becuase it’s a “moral cause”
There is nothing moral about shaming people on a creative community over something you can’t even prove. Either develop the skill sets to keep up with other established writers or take the L — but to continue this act of anon hate/shaming, whispering over-exaggerated rumors, and the public vaguing?
i am the end of all things; i have seen the fall of babylon, and have drunk the blood of kings. i am anger, and i am hostile, i am fury reborn and i am all consuming burning hatred. i am the burning flame, the violent tongue, and therefore i am destruction.
and as destruction, the lifeblood of all c r e a t i o n.
it is with a heavy heart that I come here asking for help. it makes me extremely bad and helpless. I don't think medicine that you absolutely need should be so out of your reach and with so very few options to receive it on such short notice. and no one has the savings to dip into anything to help. no one is able to have that extre income to put away for stuff like this anymore. and it's crazy, somebody as always had something. as a black woman, I've always been taught even putting your loose change in a jug can eventually add up to something you might need. ANYTHING. and there's just not as many options to put away such and such anymore. it all goes to necessities. realizing how bad off everyone genuinely has it that we can barely scrape together $30 between us because everyone is POOR.
and we've always saved up some little bit because we know. my uncle has the worst luck with the genetic draw. sickle cell, anemia, cancer, so he always been sickly and it's hard to work when your body is struggling. I know it hurts his heart and his pride that he can't quite be the man he wanted to be growing up. genuinely. or that he feels like he's not reached it. but it's hard when your body is at its limits sometimes. and respectfully I won't include any pictures or anything or even go on, because it does feel like idk. reserve him some of the dignity he has and keep it brief. he's awake and he's doing better he's just having a tough time speaking with a swollen tongue and now his wife is worried about the expense of his medicine. with all these pre-existing cases, he's always had it extremely hard getting and keeping insurance. or what he does get its with co-pays. it's not a great situation, it's really not.
but if you've got even a little bit to spare — a dollar even — I would appreciate every single one. it is absolutely better than nothing and definitely better than just drowning.
I really wish that we as a collective would get over the idea that call out culture and cancel culture and vaguing ever worked, and realize that communication is the key to moving forward and being better people. Being willing to communicate when people do things wrong is deeply and wholy important. If you cannot understand that 50% of the time, people just don't know because there's no such thing as common sense, then YOU are part of the problem.

I am once again begging people to realize that AI checker doesn’t work. it’s never worked. it’s notoriously known to have flagged human-made works as AI and AI-generated works as human-made. and by feeding it people’s works, you are feeding more works to AI, because apparently the machine itself is AI.
the only thing AI checker does is harm genuine artists and people in general too.
No one is going to see this, but I am going to say it anyway: Now is the time to start collecting offline copies of media, especially fan-made media.
The 'social media addiction' trial result has the potential to cause a chain reaction that will result in Section 230 being gutted or repealed, and the inevitable result of that will be mass censorship all over social media and the internet at large.
The right is currently in power and a good portion of the left is also misguidedly trying to "protect people" by censoring content on social media. And do you know what is going to be one of the first things to go? Anything LGBTQ+ along with any other minorities that they can accuse of 'harming children'.
And whatever is left of the internet could be age-gated, which means giving your real ID and data constantly to websites that routinely have data breeches.
Protect what is valuable to you in your online spaces: get a hard drive and save the fanfics and fanart and any other internet content that is valuable to you, and determine how to contact any Internet Friends if you suddenly have to provide ID to use a website but don't want to give them that info.
(And consider sailing the seven seas to acquire any media you don't also want to hand your ID over to consume.)
