Teas for Witches: the Basics
I can talk about tea literally all day (and I have because Iâve worked in a spice and tea shop for years), and there is SO much to talk about with both health and magical benefits. Teas are made from tea leaves called camellia sinensis, with the exception of herbal teas/infusions. For this, Iâm going to list magical and health benefits by type of tea.
Black Tea
Feminine * Earth * Winter * Strength * Stability * Death * Expelling Negativity * Alertness * Energy
Black tea is the most fermented and oxidized of all teas. Its tea leaves look shriveled and black. It combats heart ailments, digestive problems, high cholesterol, asthma, and breast/menstrual problems. Black tea also has a lot of caffeine (47 mg, still less than coffee) and too much of it can cause acidity issues in the stomach. Â
Examples: English/Irish Breakfast Tea, Assam, Darjeeling, Lapsung Souchang, Ceylon, Earl Grey
**There is a subset of black tea called Pu-erh, a post-fermented black tea. Some consider this to be the âpurestâ of all teas and connect it to the aether, as it is rare and valuable.
Green Tea
Masculine * Fire * Summer * Passion * Healing * Conscious Mind * Sexual Health * Love * Energy * Progress * Magic
Green tea is slightly steamed but not fermented, which maintains its green color. It has many health benefits, such as detoxifying, reducing cholesterol and weight, boosting immunity and stamina, and reducing blood glucose. It has less caffeine than black, but still some.Â
Examples: Jasmine, Sencha, Matcha, Gyokurocha, Genmaicha, Hojicha, Gunpowder, Dragonwell
Oolong Tea
Feminine * Water * Autumn * Reflection * Meditation * Wisdom * Serenity * Concentration * Romance * Friendship
I always describe Oolong as being between Green and Blacks, since it is half fermented. It can help manage weight and stress, balance blog sugar levels, remove free radicals, and promote healthy skin and bones. HOWEVER, too much can actually speed up bone degradation because it sweeps away excess calcium. And beware of its high caffeine content (I used to drink Raspberry Wulong to pull all-nighters).
Examples: Milk Oolong, Formosa, Wulongs
White Tea
Masculine * Air * Spring * Happiness * Wisdom * Moon * Purification * Protection * Clarity * Cleansing * Beginnings
White tea is a little harder to find. Either the tea leaves are plucked as immature leaves and steamed, or the leaves have not been processed (there seems to be little consensus across cultures). Some have a small amount of caffeine. Itâs a great antibacterial and antioxidant, and it improves the heart, oral health, and skin. Drinking a couple cups works better than one, and you can reuse the tea leaves, granted that the second cup will brew longer.
Examples: White teas come in many flavors and are usually labeled as white tea. You may need to seek out a tea shop to find some.
Herbal Tea
Magical properties depend on which herbs are used
This tea seems to be the most popular for witches on tumblr, because it is composed of dry, unprocessed herbs, seeds, fruits, or roots, and has no caffeine (as long as the herb doesnât!). There are many recipes online as herbals are easy to make. In general, herbal tea promotes calm, reduces cholesterol and risk of heart conditions, cancers, and diabetes. Due to its lack of actual tea leaves it has less antioxidants than other teas. Some donât even call it a tea, but dub it Herbal Infusion.
Examples: Rooibos, most Chais, Ginseng, Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, Hibiscus
**Yerba Mate is an herbal tea that is notorious for its high caffeine levels (youâve probably seen the energy drink). It also zaps oneâs appetite and can become addictive, so be careful around this tea!
As always, feel free to add/message me of any corrections, and I hope you find your cup of tea!
Tips for baby witches, lazy witches, tired witches, or any witch really:
Enchant your morning cup of tea/coffee
Match the colours of your makeup to your intentions for the day
Visualise the water washing away all the negativity when you shower
Enchant your nail polish (bonus: match the colour to the intention, black for protection, red for love, green for prosperity, etc)
Say your affirmations (for clear skin, fading scars, reducing dullness, etc) when doing your skincare
Charge your perfume with the energy you wish to attract
When tying your shoes, visualise them symbolically protecting you from tripping and âfallingâ into places and situations that disturb your peace
Use music to your advantage, listen to songs that match your intentions, or alternatively, use music as a tool for divination
Some witches veil to keep their energy from draining and to protect them from othersâ emotions, but a beanie works too
If you wear glasses, use them as a tool so that they help you âsee clearlyâ
Put your moisturiser on in the shape of a sigil before massaging it in
Childâs pose is always there for you, use it when you need it (alleviates stress and anxiety, helps clear the mind, releases tension in the back, helps to steady breathing, is overall great for grounding, etc)
Visualise the A+ (on your report card/on the paper after itâs been graded/etc) right before beginning to solve your test/exam, it also helps if you can draw a sigil somewhere on the paper, or trace it on the paper with your finger
When shaving, visualise any energy buildup being shaved off as well
If you play the guitar, draw a sigil on your plectrum/pick for an added boost (this works with other instruments too)
Do not litter out of respect for nature and its spirits
Feel free to add more things onto the list
When youâre just starting out, or even when youâre just too drained to practice your craft like you used to, it can feel like there isnât enough magic in your life. This is your daily reminder that a lot of the time, the only difference between routine and magick is intent.
The growing presence of racists in American Pagan communities threatens to tear the faith apart.
This is not news, but it is an important read, especially for people who were previously unaware of the trend of neo-Nazis stealing pagan symbols for their own.
If you are an anti-racist, anti-fascist pagan, keep doing what you are doing, you are keeping the fight alive
If you are an anti-racist, anti-fascist person who is not a pagan, help us spread the word of this, stand in solidarity with us as we kick the fascists out of our communities
If you are a fascist pagan, fuck off, this faith is a peaceful one
No platforms for fascists.
~ Max
âŠand right here is why you see me starting to wear non-viking garb in the SCA. Because Iâm really REALLY white and really REALLY not a racist, and I hate that these people have found their way into my weekend nerdery.
I would posit that if you feel comfortable doing it, and if you feel supported, you should definitely still wear viking garb and not let fascist nazi bastards appropriate it for their own purpose without opposition. đ€
Please, for the love of fuck, do NOT give up on either your religious paraphernalia *or* your hobbyist Viking swag because of this. Yâknow what you ought to do instead? Be vocally and openly anti-racist. Make it known that all this bonehead bullshit is not what we stand for.
And how do you make something known? Well, a man by his speech is known to men.
Make fascists afraid to be vocal. Run them out and counteract their evil with overwhelming good. Make donations to charities that help people of colour under the public name and honour of Odin and Freya and Frigg and Thor. Shout louder than they do. I see a lot of fascism and disgusting vitriol in the comments section on videos from wardruna or heidlung - and something Iâd like to do is reupload those videos with the express intent of curating the comments section heavily to keep that shit out. Most accounts wonât do that and they donât notice how much hate is in their fan base. so I get really angry about these people taking music and culture that is expressly open and for everyone to pollute it in this way. If you know anyone personally that uploads videos to YouTube please remind them to curate that shit, report the bastards. Make statements that itâs not okay. Even one small platform is too one too many.
@dovewithscales
This witch curses fascists. I will not stand idly by while fascists, nazis, and bigots are, well, alive.
They are not welcomed in my church, my religion, my country, or my planet. All fascists should live in fear.
Reblog to send another fascist crawling back into the cesspool they came from.

đ Pearl Bubble Your Feelings Spell đ
inspired by steven universe, a spell to bubble feelings that are causing you harm, such as unrequited love Â
đ gather: a pearl, an object that represents your feelings, a box, a white candle
đ if you do not have a pearl, use clear quartz or glass.Â
đ gather up your feelings and push them onto the object.
đ box the object up
đ drip white wax onto the opening of the box, sealing it.
đ draw a circle in the air around the box with the pearl.
đ it is finished. it will not bother you until you unbubble it.
đ this can be done without an object, only with thought, but it is harder to accomplish them.Â
Death Witchcraft FAQ + Masterpost
I realize that others have written up posts on death witchcraft, but I decided to write one as resources on this craft are scarce and I know many are curious. Note that every witch practices the craft differently, and for different reasons; these are just my personal experiences based on myself and the death witches Iâve spoken to.
What is death witchcraft?
I personally define death witchcraft as using death to empower you rather than dishearten you. I reflect a lot upon the concept of death, come to terms with my own death, and work through spiritual âdeathsâ in my life, such as the death of friends or jobs of an aspect of my personality. Death witches work with and honor spirits of the dead (ghosts, ancestors) as well as the power of death itself (endings, resurrections). I embrace death as a new beginning, and a pivotal point in the cycle of life.
Does this answer sound familiar? Because Iâve said it before, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. I get this question a lot, you see, which is why Iâm making a post about it. (â_â)
Why do you do it?
As with many paths, every witch does it for different reasons. For some, itâs a fear, or similar fascination, with death and its inevitability. Some practice it to find peace with death, and the dead. Some combine it with chthonic worship. And some just think itâs cool shit. No matter the reason, death witchcraft is one of the more emotionally tolling and obscure crafts out there. So if youâre interested, be prepared to commit.
What do you do in the craft?
A lot of spirit work, mainly caring for the dead. Ways I do this include tending to graveyards, giving offerings to the dead, helping the dead pass on, and helping people through mourning. I do a lot of shadow work, where I face my fears about death and the âdeathsâ in my life, and come to terms with accepting it. I also honor ancestors, honor different culturesâ funeral rites, and necromancy.
Other witches combine the craft with vulture culture, or becoming a mortician or funerary holder. I personally do not.
What is necromancy?
Necromancy is divination through the dead. Basicallyâtalking to the dead to receive insights into the present or future. Necromancy can be performed in many different ways, including but not limited to summonings, bone throwing, pendulum readings, and other rituals. No, thereâs no reanimating of the dead; many necromancers are strictly against that, if it is at all possible.
Some necromancers are death witches; some are not. I know many death witches who incorporate divination into their path, but would not call it necromancy. The lines seem to be blurred here. But because I receive so many questions on it, I figured Iâd include it in the FAQ.
Is death witchcraft religious?
Well, uh ⊠yes and no. Considering how much work death witches do with the spirits of a dead, a general belief in the afterlife is common among death witches. However, I do know some death witches who engage in past life work as an aspect of their craft instead of working with ghosts. Death witchcraft has the capability of neatly fitting into most kinds of religious belief, if necessary.
Is death witchcraft a âdarkâ path?
No. In my opinion, at least, no. The only thing âdarkâ about death witchcraft is that it involves, well, death, an idea which many people are uncomfortable with. And it can be a hard and draining path. But, dark? Or unethical? Not at all.
Are there any rules to death witchcraft?
The only rule I can think of that I would ever even think to enforce is to respect both the dead and the living. The dead are not your slaves, theyâre not there to give you power; theyâre just as valuable as we are. Respect them, and theyâll respect you.

Sometimes I want to have long discussions about ethics with witchblr.
I find witchblr's total rejection of casting spells without someone's permission combined with their pro-curse/curse-positive attitude to be fascinating.
If one wants to claim that casting spells without someone's permission is always wrong, then it is wrong even if that spell is a curse against someone evil.
And if it's ethical to curse someone who is evil/abusive, are there then other exceptions to the rule about spellcasting without permission? What are those exceptions? Is it only wrong if the spell targets one person? What about community workings?
I dont know. As someone who doesn't curse because I find it immoral, I find the potential "conflicts" or troublespots in this ethical conundrum to be interesting!
If anyone wants to share their views, I'd love to hear it!
i personally have no qualms about using any spell against another
toughen up and get right w ur ancestors so they dont work
Iâm fan of learning the ârulesâ, examining the rules, then breaking them through creativity. In other words, I suspect âinner circleâ tumblr witchcraft is a lot more complex than it appears on the face. We tell children fairy tales to scare them to behave properly or possible to examine their behavior, and we grow up to learn that the stories are just warning and metaphors. If people canât see that witchcraft is malleable as they move through their practice, thatâs on them.
Ever wonder why all those old grimoires have things that donât make sense to us today? One of those reasons is because they left out was what common to them. Lots of people do that on tumblr, I expect it.
I also think there's a different way to look at it.
Casting on someone without their permission is a negative act does not contradict the idea that sometimes a negative act is called for.
So, like, casting a love spell on someone without their permission is, effectively, a curse and you don't get to pretend you aren't practicing that kind of magic.
I look at it this way - itâs a sliding scale.
If youâre looking to work love magic, that always requires consent, or at least measures to ensure that free will is not being compromised, because love should be consensual.
If youâre looking to heal a particular person who is known to you, you ought to ask their permission out of courtesy, and because the magic will work better if theyâre not fighting it.
If youâre looking to bring a particular person legal victory or good fortune or protection, itâs nice to ask if they want or need it first, but you can also just send it under the auspice of a blessing. Blessings are gifts, which fall into a grey area where the receiving partyâs consent may or may not be required.
If youâre looking to curse someone, itâs a different story.
You donât generally ask someoneâs permission before you punch them in the face.
(And of course, so many of these ârulesâ that get passed about are just peopleâs opinions that have become so pervasive that they get referenced as facts. And that is a wider community issue that affects a lot more than just the dichotomy of curse-positivity vs consent in casting, so Iâll leave it at that for now.)
For me a major factor is whether the spell impacts the recipients free will. Love magic? Yikes! That borders on mind control, which I definitely donât condone. But cursing someone with bad luck or a migraine exerts no control over their autonomy, so I have no qualms about it
Well, that brings up an important point -
Thereâs a whole range of popular techniques in love magic that cater to the idea of forcing someone to love you / return to you / leave their SO for you, but these, as weâve seen so often in related media, are often fraught with disappointment, if not downright disastrous. Aside from the obvious morality-tale implications, I firmly believe that these spells so often go awry because things can go sideways when you mess with free will in a situation thatâs meant to be consensual.
But if you work love magic thatâs meant to increase joy, bring harmony, facilitate communication, encourage emotional healing, or attract an ideal (unknown) partner, that works within the bounds of a consensual relationship. Provided, of course, that mundane measures are taken to nurture the health of an existing relationship or seek out a new one. And thatâs not even touching the concept of love spells worked for the improvement of the relationship with the self.
So, does love magic always have to circumvent or overpower someoneâs free will?
Not if you think outside the box.
Casual Curse for Bigots
Inspired by the douchebag who saw fit to put a neo-Nazi (oh sorry, âalt-rightâ -eyeroll-) propaganda flier under my wiper at the market today.
May the hateful hands that forged this Have their own hatred turned back to bite them May their own teeth bite their slanderous tongues May their own bile choke them May their own spite confound them May the harm they do be visited upon them a hundred times And a hundred times again Until enlightenment finds them Or death takes them
Tear the flier into pieces, dispose of it in a public waste receptacle, and spit after it.
Bringing this back. Because of reasons.
ok so question
how would one go about closing a circle? iâve done research and the only thing i ever really hear is âitâs totally personal to you!!â but where would i draw the line?
kinda like how certain types of poems have certain rules in order for it to be that type of poem but if you follow all of those rules the rest is up to you, what are the basics? should i use protective herbs? candles? does it even have to use physical objects or can it just be a mental thing? does the circle actually have to be a circle with no openings or can it just be a couple of objects relating to the spell that vaguely create a circle when you connect the dots? i want to start doing pendulum reading and casting spells that call for circles but i was never really taught how.
thanks for reading and if you have even a little bit of an answer, please let me know! anything helps as i have literally zero (0) knowledge on this whatsoever
I can see where the confusion lies. Circle-casting IS complicated in that regard, because there are so many ways of doing it and every witch does it just a little bit differently.
The most basic rule of circle-casting is to give yourself space to work. Before you start incorporating a marked boundary or candle points or tools or anything, make sure that your circle is going to be large enough for whatever you plan to do while youâre inside it.
The circle can be as simple as a mental visualization or as complex as a full-scale containment figure complete with sigils and candles and whatnot. Somewhere in the middle are the easy things like a circle drawn in chalk or marked loosely in dirt or sand. You can also make a portable circle out of yarn or string, which you spread out and bless with whatever power you wish before beginning your spellwork.
On the subject of blessing your circle - This is the portion thatâs really up to you. If you feel comfortable imbuing the circle with your own power, if you feel that thatâs enough to keep the space safe, then thatâs all you need. If you prefer to call upon a spirit helper or a preferred deity, thatâs fine to. Just ask them, in whatever words you feel are appropriate, to sanctify the space youâve made, to keep it safe while youâre there, and to block out harmful or distracting influences. This can be done while walking the boundary of the circle or just standing inside it and calling upon your chosen power.
The circle itself can be a complete unbroken figure, carefully drawn with no breaks, or it can be more of a symbolic space marked out by candles or stones. It doesnât even technically have to be a CIRCLE. If your workspace only allows for a square or triangle, then use that. Pretty much any regular polygon will do as long as you feel comfortable using it and make sure itâs properly in place before you begin your work.
To cast the circle, you can walk the boundary, chant, sing, visualize, lay out markers, draw a line, whatever feels right for you and your space. This is another area where circle-casting varies widely from witch to witch. When I cast a circle, I generally measure out the space I want to use, then walk the boundary three times - once with smoke, once with water, and once with a ritual knife. I also lay down markers for the cardinal directions, just to help myself stay oriented and also to remind myself where the boundaries of the space are. (Itâs not always easy for me to visualize boundaries without a physical reminder.)
A circle that is properly in place will feel complete. Itâs difficult to articulate in text, but some witches describe it in a similar way to how freshly-laid wards will feel - like a wall or a bubble with no breaks, a solid barrier between you and the outside, with a well of calm at the center where you stand. When I cast my circles, it sometimes feels like standing on an island in the middle of a river. Everything around me is moving and rushing, but the space where I stand remains still and safe and somehow quieter.
When youâre finished whatever work you meant to perform, the circle can be opened (not broken) by symbolically âcuttingâ the air with a ritual knife or a chop of your hand, or by disturbing the physical boundary by erasing part of a line or moving a marker component out of formation. As you do this, you can visualize part of the circle opening like a curtain and rolling back to release the space, but remaining intact as it does. In this way, the circle does not âbreak,â thereby risking disturbance to your working or exposing you to potential harm, but simply indicates that the use of the space for ritual purposes has ended and returns it to the natural flow of things.

Family/Loved One(s) Protection Jar
What Youâll Need:
Herbs: (Amount of each herb is up to you, I used about a teaspoon of each except the powdered garlic, which I used a little more of compared to the other herbs)
Powdered Garlic
Ground Black Pepper
Dried Cloves
Crystallized or Ground Ginger
Optional: Cayenne Pepper to enhance each of the herbs power/ energy.
Stones/Crystals (Optional):
Hematite (1 or more, completely up to you)
Other Materials:
Blue or Black Candle.
Jar
Paper
Pen or pencil
Directions:
1. Place or pour all of your herbs and your stone(s) into the jar.
2. Write the names of those you wish to protect (include your name as well) onto pieces of paper (1 piece of paper for each person, so Iâd recommend that each piece be small pieces of paper).
3. (For this step if you are interested, you can inscribe a protective sigil into the candle with a knife, but this is completely optional) Light your candle of choice and let the wax melt onto the inside of the jarâs lid. Make sure that you can still close the lid after melting it onto the inside of the lid.
4. Say this as many times as you wish:
âMay those I love and myself be protected from all harm so that we may live safelyâ
5. Blow out the candle and place the pieces of paper into the jar and close the jar.
After the spell is cast, keep the jar in a safe place. I havenât touched the jar since I casted the spell, so Iâm not sure what will happen if you were to open the jar. But I recommend that you donât open the jar since the candle wax and the incantation basically sealed the spell, meaning that if you were to open it, the spell might break or stop working. So just try to keep it off the side out of harmâs way.

Waters
Hello darlings! Today I really want to talk about magical waters. Iâll start with simple waters, then one ingredient waters, and then composite waters. Waters is pretty much anything like water that is used magically, so it ranges from storm water to tobacco and damiana tincture, and other stuff. Any of these can be collected whenever is convenient, but I added the time to collect them to make them more potent.
Natural Waters
Rain Water:
Rain water can be used for any spell to make it more potent, but it is a useful tool in peace magic, to quell anger, to relax, and for dream magic. Collect whenever you want.
Storm Water:
Storm water can be either protective or offensive. Use it to wash down your doors to protect you from hexes, and wash your tools with it to amplify their power. You can use it in any hexes or curses you want. To amplify it, add rusty nails to it and let turn rusty. Collect on a waxing gibbous moon.
Swamp Water:
Can be used in works for binding, hexing, or cloaking. Use when wanting to cause illness. Annoint yourself with swamp water to make yourself unnoticeable to others. Colelct on the dark moon (second new moon of the month) or on the new moon.
Marsh Water:
Marsh water is almost the same as swamp water, but it is more suitable for cloaking than other things. It can also be used for cleansing negative energies. Colelct on waning crescent moon.
Hail Water:
Hail water is melted hailstones. Use it for protection or hexing. Similar to storm water, but more aggressive. Use when you want to break sojmeone, or when you wish to cause physical harm. Collect during a full moon for best results.
Salt Water:
Salt water can be used for cleansing and protection from negativity. Simply add salt to water.
Sea Water:
Use sea water in works involving the psyche, or in hexing. It can also be used for cleansing. I use it to work with demonic forces as well. Collect on a new moon.
Lake Water:
Lake water is amazing in works concerning emotions, love, memories, or past life regressions. Boil it and drink it to enhance attempts for past life regressions. Collect on waxing moon.
Pond Water:
Use when wanting to bind someone, or to limit their horizons. Keep a flower vase with pond water in it on a table to silence a conversation to those not sitting at it. Collect on a dark moon.
Spring Water:
Spring water is super versatile. Use it instead of tap water.
Dew:
Dew can allow the witch to cast powerful glamours for beauty and youth. It is an important ingredient in love potions. Collect at sunrise during a waxing or full moon.
Self Water:
Fancy word for spit or urine. This one is a little nasty, but it is to be used whenever a spell needs to be tied to the caster.
Simples
Sun Water:
Bask any sort of water in the sun for a full day. Use it for cleansing, to bring positivity into a space, or for glamours of youth.
Moon Water:
Used to power up any spell. Let water sit in the light of a full moon for a full night.
Tobacco Water:
Steep tobacco into water for a week in the fridge. When strained, mix with 100 proof vodka, about 1.5 parts water for 1 part vodka. Use it to cleanse or to offer to spirits when working with them. Can be used to cause addiction in a person.
Saffron Water:
Steep saffron into water and mix 1 part water with 1 part vodka. Use to raise winds by sprinkling it in the air, or rub on your lips before whistling and raising storms.
Rose Water:
Use for love, glamours, and beauty. Steep fresh rose petals in vodka for a period of 4 weeks, and then extract all the liquid from the petals by pressing them until they have lost their color. Cut with 0.5 part water.
Orange Blossom Water:
Use for joy, beauty, cleansing, and sunshine. Prepare in the same way as the rose water.
Lilac Water:
Use lilac water for sleep, dream magic, spirit work, and cleansing. Prepare in the same way you would prepare the other flower waters.
Apple Blossom Water:
Create this by the same manner as the three flower waters above. Use for protection, love, and beauty.
Holly Water:
Holly water is to be used to protect your family. It will prick at intruders, or unwelcomed guests. It will also allow you to always have knoledge of the safety of your family. Simply steep holly leaves in water and mix with vodka. Do not ingest this, as it is poisonous.
Composites
All Bite no Bark Water:
A powerful water used for protection of a space. Mix together storm water, hair of a black dog, dirt of a grave, the ashes of psalm 7, rose thorns, teeth of a canidae, and three holly berries. Pour around a room which you wish to protect, or water protective plants to give their produce an aggressive kick. This water will protect a space with the ferocity of a rabid dog, and will not warn before attacking.
Fiery Wall of Protection Water:
Mix together sun water with three hot peppers, red brick dust, pottasium nitrate (saltpeter), sulfur, and blackthorn pricks. Another like the above, but more passive. Attacker might suffer a rash after encountering it.
Pitch Water:
Use pitch water to stop someone from making any progress. Mix together water from a swamp, gum arabic or acacia, charcoal dust, and chapparal. It can also be used to dissorient. Fair warning, this water is hella sticky.
Fuck Off Water:
Mix together sumac, apple seeds, thorns of a blackberry, cloves and storm water. Use it to repel unwanted people.
Goodbye Lover Water:
Mix together sea water, sumac, cloves, poppy seeds, thorns of a cactus, petals of a hibiscus flower, and saltpeter. Use it to get rid of unwanted courters or lovers, or to make two people break up.
I hope you guys find this useful! Make sure to be careful with any of the potentially dangerous ingredients listed, and put these to good use! Good luck my darlings.
