i dont think enough otgw fans talk about the exploration of complex family dynamics that the show manages to weave through pretty much every episode. like the relationship between wirt and greg seems so innocuous in the beginning, just normal aloofness due to the age gap, but as the episodes go on it becomes clear that wirt full on resents greg and actively dismisses him as “his stepdad’s kid,” while greg openly admires/loves wirt and doesnt understand why he wont spend time with him. theres so many little moments that make the lack of reciprocity in their relationship obvious, and it literally takes almost DYING for wirt to understand that he needs to treat his brother better. like holy fuck man ill be shocked if the person who wrote their backstory doesnt have a step/half-sibling cause WOW they got it right
nah i got more to say about this cause i genuinely think this show handles this kind of relationship in such a refreshingly honest way. whenever you see a step/half-sibling relationship in kids media its always such overdramatic nonsense with one character screaming “I HATE YOU!!!” and a whole big dramatic crying scene but we dont get that here. wirt doesnt hate greg. the resentment is there, absolutely - but more than anything, wirt is INDIFFERENT to greg. he doesnt even think of greg as his brother, which his song makes pretty clear given his wording:
and the disconnect between them is made plain through small, but notable actions throughout the show. on more than one occasion, wirt leaves greg behind (one time after “jokingly” telling the frog cops to take greg instead), doesnt seem that bothered when he goes off by himself, is slow to humor him but quick to pass the buck onto him, and just generally, is so busy wallowing in his own fear and misery that he allows greg to get into some really dangerous situations for a pure lack of concern. the only time we see wirt really get angry at greg is in the flashback scene, and because greg was trying to HELP him. to really rub salt in the wound, that scene is immediately followed by wirt jumping out of the way of the train - and leaving greg behind.
thats not to say that wirt really wanted greg to get hurt or anything like that. i think its more that wirt doesnt truly understand the position hes in, nor what the woodsman told him in the first episode - “you are the elder child; YOU are responsible for you and your brothers’ actions!” - until greg is taken by the beast. greg is willing to sacrifice himself for wirt without a second thought, but wirt would never have done the same because he is self-absorbed to such an extent that he doesnt understand his responsibility - and failure - to protect greg until its almost too late.
over the garden wall is a GREAT coming-of-age story for a lot of reasons, but i think the development of wirt and gregs relationship is my absolute favorite part of it. wirt goes from thinking of greg as some kid hes stuck with to immediately asking for greg after nearly dying, and the path they took to get there is crafted so perfectly. i fuckin love this show bro ksdfhjkdsf

Timmy is so extremely Boy that he's also a girl to me. You understand and you agree.
Related: when he feels like a girl, he just has Wanda and Cosmo switch his gender. So much easier than keeping a whole second closet of wigs and makeup and dresses on hand! Normally, though, Timmy feels masculine/androgynous and doesn't care how he's perceived. He and Chester briefly "date" in middle school. It's mostly sweaty hand holding and lots of awkward blushing. It doesn't work out, but it's what introduces Timmy to the wonderful world of Questioning Your Sexuality (and eventually his gender).

His favorite reoccuring wish is putting a theme park in his backyard. At this point, he's purposely trying to see how long it takes his parents to notice. (Hint: they never do.)
He gets a shitty tattoo when he's fifteen to spite his parents (they don't notice). His second tattoo is carefully selected to remind him of Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof, and they are with Timmy in human disguises when he gets it. He gets other tattoos eventually, but the second one is his favorite.
When he gets older, his parents get worse. They neglect him more frequently and yell at him when they are paying attention to him. Wanda and Cosmo give Timmy an emergency button that will poof him into their castle if he needs to hide for whatever reason. He eventually gets his own bedroom next to Poof's.
(On really bad nights, he wanders the Hall of Timmy to remind himself that he's loved.)
Timmy dislikes his last name. (For a couple years after the Wishology stuff, he flinches when someone says his full name.)
He and Trixie become really good friends in high school once she stops caring about the opinions of people who don't like the real her, anyway.

There’s definitely mixed reviews about it WHICH IS FAIR bc the premise is about a girl named Anzu who isn’t interested in romantic relationships but she then gets pushed into typical dating sim situations with Really Cute Boys in an effort to like. Force her into a relationship. And obv this kinda comes off as arophobic. But the fact that she so stubbornly refuses to partake and tries so hard to veer away from those situations makes it so fucking funny, especially when she rejects the boys with faces like this
And it turns out it’s really just a show about found family and overcoming trauma and developing healthy friendships with people and UGH. UGHHH it’s so good.
I actually adore Riri lmao they’re SUCH a little shit and I very much enjoy insanely chaotic characters like that. And we start off thinking okay wow this person’s kind of an asshole for forcing a girl to get a boyfriend by taking away her cat, her favorite hobby and her favorite snack, but then we find out OH, they’re just a cog in a corporate machine and they don’t really have much of a choice about it. And we slowly see Riri actually gain true affection for Anzu, and see how much they come to care about her as a person rather than just as a test subject, to the point of them actually breaking the rules of their contract just to make sure she’s safe. AND NOT JUST HER. They make sure the people she’s associated with are safe too, even if it risks them getting in Big Trouble with their boss. AND the fact that they canonically go by they/them pronouns but can ALSO transform into a boy or a girl depending on their preference, and they playfully flirt with Anzu in both forms?? It’s so good. Also thinking about the effort that Anzu goes through to make sure Riri gets to stick around;; like even tho she’d never admit it. She’s come to care for them too in some very strange way lol
And Junta;; the fact that Anzu is actually so concerned about him possibly being brainwashed into the position of childhood friend? Like she doesn’t immediately push him away or shut him down, she actually cares about him as a person and wants him to find happiness and wants to get him out of the situation she thinks he’s in. But then she finds out oh wait he actually IS a childhood friend. And he’s such a good boy. I love love LOVE how they handle the love triangle aspect in this, because obviously yes there’s a bit of jealousy, but not enough for things to get petty between him and Kazuki. They actually treat each other with respect and regard each other as friends and are kinda rooting for the other in their own way. Kind of “may the best man win” sort of thing. There’s no toxicity, there’s no classic “fighting over the female love interest” trope, they actually genuinely like each other after a bit of awkwardness enough to feel comfortable with living together and living with Anzu. They’re SO fucking sweet god dammit //shakes fists
(Honestly tho I really wish we got more episodes focused on Junta. Bc he really seemed like more of a background character and made the whole “love triangle” aspect not feel as prominent. Which is fine I guess?? But I felt so bad for him lmao)
And Kazuki 😭 My beloved. My poor sweet boy who deserves the world and everything in it. Just the build up. The subtle hints of his trauma that pop up every now and then. And when it all comes together you’re like oh!! Ohhh. THAT’S why he acts so aloof and cold all the time. THAT’S why he doesn’t like being the center of female attention. THAT’S why he gets distressed at things that, at first, seem so insignificant. THAT’S why he got attached to Anzu so quickly. And I love the way they handle his trauma, how they don’t make it seem any less important or alarming just because he’s a guy. And how Anzu’s there for him through everything 🤧 How she’s the person to pull him out of the darkness, how she stands up for him time and time again, how she just KNOWS when he’s uncomfortable and steps in to protect him. She ends up caring about him so much despite how they were set up to encounter initially. And he cares about her so much too. And I just 🥺 I care them
Also the fact how everyone came to help Kazuki when they found out what was going on. No judgement, no “you’re making this up”, no “isn’t this your fault to begin with?” They all just step in without even hesitating and support him through his trauma and immediately go “Okay we’ve got a problem so here’s our gameplan.” SEE. IT’S REALLY ABOUT THE FOUND FAMILY,
And one of my favorite things. Riri 🤝 Hijiri using their influence and power to protect both Anzu and Kazuki despite the risks to their reputation and social standing
OH AND I wanted to mention. I love that all of the classic romantic tropes i.e. something happening to your cute neighbor’s apartment so that they’re forced to live with you while it gets sorted out–those are generally really cheesy and make huge plot holes and don’t make ANY sense in the narrative. But that’s the thing about RK, they make it funny, yeah your cute boy neighbor’s apartment flooded bc we need him to come live with you. We did it with magic. Yes your childhood friend is living with you now bc we had a weirdo break into your apartment–with magic. So now he feels like he needs to stay with you and protect you. Yes you got hit by a car with a really rich boy inside and now he’s interested in you. We also did this with magic. Everything that would be regarded as a “coincidence” and is a badly written plot point just to push two characters together is actually explained through the hilarious concept of magic and I LOVE that it’s so fucking funny
Honestly this show is really up to interpretation too which I like a lot? Some people think hey yeah, maybe Anzu will end up with someone. Others say you know what the message here is that friendship is the most important thing and sometimes platonic relationships are better than romantic ones. The ending is pretty ambiguous so it could really go in any direction.

I started playing Ni no Kuni 2 a few days ago having played the first game but entirely blind to everything about the sequel except that the main character was a catboy, and this was absolutely the best way to play it because nothing could have prepared me for the experience of turning the game on, pressing the start button, and finding out what the real premise was.
This hot anime sword boy is 60 years old. He has a wife and kids. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois. He can use the word "gerrymander" in a sentence. He knows what a Roth IRA is, and has one. He has strong opinions on marginal tax rates and soybean subsidies. He has definitely plagiarized the United States Constitution. I am convinced that in this screenshot, he is composing an attack ad in his head.
The greatest failure of this game is that it never gave me the scene where the rest of the party finds out right in the middle of the final boss gauntlet that the reason the 19-year-old wunderkind is so good at political bureaucracy is that he never bothered to mention that he's actually old enough to be his own dad.
I did not provide the exact details in earlier posts because the experience of going into this premise 100% blind was fucking incredible but now that the cat's out of the bag in the tags I want to be clear that I am being completely literal. This is a colorful and lighthearted video game for children which is typical in its tone on that front in every single way, except that the inciting incident happens to be that New York City gets hit with a cruise missile and isekais the President of the United States as the manic pixie dream mentor for a magical catboy and deages him into a hot teenager, at which point he literally pulls out a literal glock and literally caps a guy.
This man has had to ritually pardon a turkey. He's the party's purest melee specialist because he's the magic equivalent of a boomer who only knows how to use their computer for Facebook. The dark isekai gods grew his hair out and tied it back for him and now he keeps fussing with it. One of his attacks is called "Executive Order." He gets low-key sexually harassed every time he goes to the library. When he was planning an undercover operation he asked their chief engineer to make him a bunch of gadgets, and they were all just things he remembered from James Bond movies. He gets mad that he looks so young because it cuts into his gravitas. There is a sidequest where he has to explain Nigerian email scams to his catboy, two pirates, and the finance minister. Somehow it seems to have escaped every single person working on this game that this is the funniest character in the world.

I divide the languages I make into 4 parts: Phonology, Grammar, Dictionary, and Writing System. I charge a certain amount for each part depending on the desired complexity for each, and I can do all or some parts depending on your needs. For example I can make an entire language from scratch or I can focus on, say, just the phonology or dictionary if you would prefer to do the other parts yourself
In other words you're basically ordering a custom language like a sandwich, as stupid as that sounds. I'm very flexible so don't be afraid to tell me what you're looking for, especially if it's weird (I love weird, don't hold back). Just beware that complexity charges may apply at any stage if what you're looking for is particularly laborious
TL;DR: A barebones conlang with 150 words and no writing system costs about $35. A language with the full complexity and dumbassery of English with 550 words would be $138 (and might incur some complexity charges)

How you want the language to work. Can be similar to or vastly different from English, all up to you. Choose one.
Basic Grammar - $20
I'll make rules that cover basic sentences and questions, including basic inflection for nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs if applicable. Includes ~50 basic and grammatical words.
Complex Grammar - $30
Everything in basic grammar plus extra rules that cover complex sentences and word derivation (which may give you extra free words!)
Natlang Grammar - $50
All the bells and whistles. All of the above plus extra declensions, inconsistencies, and situational grammatical constructs. You'll be putting me through the wringer.

Writing System 書寫系統
How you want your language to be natively written (my fav part). See below to decide what works best for your language if you want one.
Alphabet - $20 ΑΛΦΑΒΕΤ
A writing system where each character represents a single sound. A versatile choice that can work for pretty much any language, as evidenced by the Latin alphabet and its variations being the most used writing system in the world.
Abjad - $25 أبجد عربي
The predecessor to the alphabet which only writes consonants and rarely includes vowels. Best used for languages that have a heavy focus on consonants and where vowels don't carry much grammatical meaning, like Arabic, Ge'ez, or Aramaic.
Alpha-Syllabary/Abugida - $25 한글 अबुगिदा
A middleground option between an alphabet and a syllabary, where each character is made up of smaller parts that come together to represent a syllable. Another versatile choice used all over the Indian subcontinent and the Korean Peninsula.
Syllabary - $35 ひらがな カタカナ
A writing system where every character represents a syllable. Fits best with languages that have lots of open syllables, like Japanese, Inuktitut, or Cherokee. More expensive because syllabaries often contain a large number of characters.
Logography - $1 Per Word 漢字
A writing system where every character reassembles a whole word or concept. Can work for any kind of language but works best with languages that are phonologically dense and/or have simple grammar.
Mixed - Negotiable وαत ðə ファⲕ 암 あй रीᏗŋ

If you want I can create a written number system to pair with your writing system. It can be simple or complex and can be any base you want (within reason of course).
Terms ⚠️
To make this as easy as possible for me to understand what to make for you, please provide a reference, idea, or general vibe for each part of the language. I understand not everyone has that much knowledge about languages so I won't request anything too specific, but examples from real-world languages usually give me a lot to work with.
Final product will be a single Excel Spreadsheet (.xlsx file) for one language that contains instructions on how to use and expand the language. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience with vector files or fonts to provide digital versions of the writing systems I make so photos of hand-drawn characters are all I offer for now.
Payment is minimum 50% upfront and the rest upon completion before the final product is delivered, as it divides the trust evenly between two unfamiliar parties. I accept payment through Venmo and Ko-fi only (no crypto or other bullshit).
Refunds: if something occurs where I will not be able to fulfill a commission, I will do what I can to return any money given to me. However if significant work has been put into a commission before an event that prevents its completion, the initial 50% payment will not be refunded.
