im possibly going to write a longer thing on this after i finish rereading homestuck, but i never really jived with criticising books like gideon the ninth or sir cameron needs to die (for the record i kinda liked the former, did not read the latter) on the basis that they belong into a nebulous category of Overtly Online Queer fiction because
1. I have read and enjoyed books/comics/webnovels by queer authors that were "very online" in that they used lingo specific to online communities of the last 15 years and were concerned with subjects like the effect of these online communities on real world politics (see: serious weakness)
2. i have read and enjoyed recent books by heterosexual authors that were very online (see: the slough house series)
3. i have read recent books by both queer and cishet authors that sucked shit
4. its very hard not to detect a level of Online in all contemporary literature esp after covid
5. blaming the fact that these books are bad/the reviewer disliked them on the authors queerness comes off as homophobic
i think the locked tomb trilogy completely fails to be more than the sum of its influences but sure lets talk about how it sucks because its gay or whatever. its maddening. do you people hear yourselves.
