I was -just- contemplating writing you to ask about solid colors and talked myself out of it and then I got the email today and it's the four colors I wear most.
Now I'm trying to rationalize getting four of your skirts in one fell swoop but I love the new waist and nobody sells pants that fit me anymore so I've decided to heck with it I'll just wear skirts and so this feels like either intense serendipity OR the little man in my phone has started tipping you off to how to get my money.

Adding to this because I don't always get comments, but when I wore the red mushroom skirt in Oregon I got into no less than 3 conversations about it, including at a diner and the ladies who stopped me to chat saw me on my way out and said, 'Still the best skirt!' and it made my day. Ok so Iāve been playing for 18 years and iām a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? Iāve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because iām an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. Iāve seen very few professional string players who are black.
Obviously there are black string players. We just donāt see them because they ādonāt look likeā string players.
This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?

I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world
I saw advice once ((I'm sure it's somewhere in my writing advice or writing tips tags, but this was years ago)) that instead of emulating Tolkien and pouring linguistics into your writing (unless, of course, you're also a linguist) you should pour the thing YOU love into your writing
are you a fashion nerd? write about their dress, the fabric, the style, let that be the part you flesh out and out and out - what fabric do the elves wear? how many layers? (are they even elves?)
are you a bug nerd? make a fantasy species that's bugs. that's based on bugs. same goes for any kind of animal. elves are OUT, my species based on bearded dragons (lizards) is IN.
tangentially this is probably an aspect of why Homestuck was so popular. WOW, did Andrew Hussie care about their funny bug-like Troll species. WOW, was the worldbuilding for troll castes and stages of life like. Tolkien level of detail. Also!! Homestuck is full of Hussie's love for WEIRD VIDEO GAME MENUS and COMPLICATED MECHANICS.
so pick whatever you're a nerd about and fill your work with that. you don't need a fantasy language. but maybe you want to talk about the anatomy of dragons. maybe you're a nerd about Cambrian period organisms and life. maybe you're a nerd about book binding. or about music and how music can be magic!

I love characters who are like "I'm a terrible person" but when you look closer it's more like
"I adapted to survive something and now I don't know how to stop being that version of myself."
Something nobody prepares you for is that the better you get at writing the harder it becomes. beginners write freely because they don't know enough to know what's wrong. then you learn. and suddenly you can see every single flaw in real time as you're making it and you have to write anyway while your own brain is in the corner going "that's a weak verb. that transition is lazy. you've used that word three times." getting good at this is mostly just getting better at ignoring yourself.
