fingers rub at tired eyes, the toll due from hours of work staring at illuminated screens.  accented words see hunched shoulders quickly straighten to attention as he takes a peek at the page.        ❝  not bad.  i’m more of a, uh, pop art fan myself, but yeah.  ❞        he’s certainly grateful for the distraction  ( as evidenced by the following effort to continue conversation ).         ❝  ya know who you should talk to is pepper.  she’s spent a number of years curating quite the collection for me.  ❞       a pause, then abrupt correction.         ❝  –— well, it’s really always been her collection,  unofficially at least.  i just pay for it.  ❞

                    𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 & 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜.   she’s grateful for anything remotely resembling a conversation between the two of them.   after sokovia, the smoldering fire that was burning inside her died down.   the thirst for revenge replaced with guilt.   “ i don’t kno'v much about pepper but if i say i v’ant to be an artist and sho’v her z’his piece of paper, she’d make fun of it. ”   or maybe not.   she doesn’t know anything about the woman except that she’s the ceo of stark industries and wears elegant clothes.   “ not z’hat i v’ant to be an artist.   z’hese scribbles are a therapy thing.   ‘ to help us find our inner peace ’. ”   at first, she thought, it was total bullshit.   it was something you could find on the internet and suggest without even knowing the source of her troubles.   now, she still doesn’t believe it’s one hundred percent effective.  ( maybe twenty-two percent effective is more likely )   but at least it keeps her hands busy.
