I've received a question which crossed my mind as well, and I think I should share my thoughts regarding it. This one is about the other person saying they're blaming Loki for the recent global pandemic.
I thank you for your patience while I was thinking and meditating on my reply to your letter.
The truth is, it is always so very easy to blame a Deity, Goddess, God, Ancient One and so on, when something very bad happens. I'll admit, I've had this thought myself: what if that this Coronavirus is Loki's scheme against us? Asking him would definitely end up in him saying it wasn't his doing, of course. Who'd know if he's telling the truth or not? He tends to lie and cheat. And it's shady, too. A disease that kills grown ups and mostly elders, but almost harmless to children? I won't deny it, I side eyed my chosen Deity, too.
But how can we even automatically assume it's his fault?
I'm not sure if you've read Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology. In it, there's the story I'm sure you're familiar with; when Thor's hammer goes missing and Loki dresses him in drag to retrieve it. In this retelling Thor thinks that Loki would not take his hammer, because Thor loves it, and it means a lot to him, and Loki wouldn't be fool enough to touch it. Then, Thor thinks to himself: if you think Loki didn't do it, then go to Loki for advice.
I went to him for advice regarding this, even though I wasn't sure if it was his doing or not. And I've received questions as answers:
"Is this in my nature? Spreading disease? How and why would this serve me? Do you think this is fun?"
Truth is, we often slip and see Loki as evil because Christianity took his shady character to create the Devil, Satan, but we all know he is not evil. He's the force of Chaos, Impermanence, Recreation; he's an agent of Change itself.
Coronavirus sure did bring changes to our everyday lives (I know it brought swift and cruel changes to mine), but try and look at this situation through his eyes: why would it be fun for him to lock up mortals in their homes and keep them in terror? Why would it be fun to have them live in fear of dying, catching a disease that kills them slowly, instead of letting them out and wreak havoc, play jokes on others, lie and deceit in order to prank each other? Why lock up children instead of letting them out to play and have fun?
Really, how and why would this serve Loki in the long run? Is a global pandemic useful for someone like him?
I think you know the answer yourself.
