Even though Darry had tried to keep himself from worrying too much about everything, he only managed to make it until Two-Bit left the Curtis house on Saturday night before disappearing off to his room and letting the stress envelop him. He kept replaying the day in his mind, fixating on stupidly specific tiny details like the look in his friend’s eyes when Darry had changed shirts, and the flush that had reddened the tips of his ears when he got called out on it, and the way he’d held so tightly to Darry’s arm during the turns… “Christ,” Darry sighed, dragging a hand over his face in frustration.
He must have said it louder than he'd thought, because Sodapop stuck his head into the room with a look of quizzical amusement. “Either Jesus himself just appeared in front of you, or somethin’s wrong. What's eatin' ya?” He took a seat on the edge of Darry’s bed, prompting his older brother to speak.
Darry took a breath. Maybe it was best to just be frank about things. “It’s Two-Bit.”
“Two-Bit’s what’s eatin’ ya?” Soda gave a confused laugh. “Well, I gotta say, Dar, I didn't think you were gonna have this reaction to that.”
Darry stared.
“If Two-Bit was eatin’ ya? I– oh, c’mon, that was funny!” Soda protested when Darry still didn't clue in.
“I don't get it.”
“You–” Sodapop gaped. “Oh. Oh.” His expression changed into something almost apologetic. “I guess I shouldn't have assumed, I just figured you knew.”
Darry was unamused. “Knew what, exactly?” His voice was sharp as he looked to his younger brother for answers, and Soda grimaced.
“That… you're in love with him?” The blond’s voice tapered off to a squeak at the end, eyes meeting Darry’s with no shortage of apprehension. “I’m sorry! We thought you knew!”
He hadn't known he was capable of being this flabbergasted. “Who the hell is ‘we’?!”
“Me and Steve, and Pony and Johnny and I think even Dally…” Soda tried to grin, but it fell a little flat with worry. “Surprise?”
So his entire group of friends thought that… Darry took a minute to contemplate it, then did a little more contemplation. Then he contemplated a little longer just to be sure.
“You, uh, you OK there buddy?” Soda waved a hand in front of his face.
With a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, Darry looked at his brother in despair. “You're right,” he groaned, carding a hand through his hair.
Soda nodded solemnly. “That’s exactly what I told Steve. Y’all act just like we used to.” His eyes went wide as he realised too late what he'd said.
Darry caught the slip too. “Like you used to, huh?”
He raised an eyebrow, and Sodapop reddened. “I wasn't supposed to say that.”
“Somethin’ you wanna tell me, Pepsi?” He used the nickname on purpose, to reassure Soda that he wasn't upset and that he really was just teasing.
It seemed to work, because his little brother heaved a sigh. “We weren't really plannin’ on tellin’ anyone.”
“You and Steve?” Darry pressed, careful to keep his tone gentle. “How long have you..?”
“Officially? Maybe a couple months. But, you know…” Soda looked away sheepishly. “Kids will be kids, or boys’ll be boys or what have you. But this conversation ain’t about me!” He regained a little composure, shooting Darry an accusatory look, who chuckled in return.
“Alright, alright, but don’t think we’re not gonna talk about this later.” He looked at his little brother with fondness in his eyes. “And for the record… you can always talk to me about these things, li’l buddy.”
Soda nodded, cracking a smile. “I’ll keep it in mind.”
They ended up talking for most of the night. Soda was considerably better than Darry at the whole feelings thing, which made it easy to talk to him, and Darry felt a weight lift from his shoulders by the time they finished talking. For a guy who was just coming to terms with the idea that he could be sweet on his friend, he felt pretty calm– at least, calm enough that he managed to fall asleep and dream the night away.
After he’d finished his roofing shift in the early morning, he’d spent the majority of Sunday hard at work on the end of the dance, choreographing and cleaning until he was sure he could perform it even if he were blindfolded. Dance had always been his go-to tool when something needed thinking over, and today he poured his focus and feelings so strongly into the activity that he briefly entertained the notion that Two-Bit might be able to pick up on his feelings only from watching him dance. It did eventually occur to him that there was no way for this to be possible, but the idea had set his heart racing for a second.
That feeling carried him all the way through until Monday, when he arrived at the studio a little bit sore, but with a nervous spring in his step and his nicest dancing clothes. They were the all-black ones that always got the girls he taught gawking and giggling amongst themselves. If it was good enough for them, Two-Bit was bound to like it too, right? He hoped so.
For once it was easy for him to ignore the goings-on of class and properly lose himself in the music. By the time the class was over, he felt confident that he’d actually taught his students more than usual. That confidence was a good thing, too, because when Two-Bit sidled into the studio a few minutes early, he nearly fell out of the turn he was practising.
“Hey, Dar. Hope I’m not too early?” Two-Bit smiled, bright and easy. He’d brought himself a water bottle this time, Darry noticed.
Darry pushed his hair back and out of his face. “Not too early at all. I was just practisin’, tryin’ to see if I needed to fix anythin’ up before you got here.”
“Hey, I bet it's great,” Two assured him. “You don't gotta practise for me. Hell, I don't think I’d know if you didn’t.” Well, that was sweet of him, Darry noted– uncharacteristically so.
Maybe his heart fluttered a little bit at the praise. Could anyone really blame him, when Two-Bit sounded so kind and sincere and– He decided to quit thinking and get working on demonstrating the new part of the dance. “You ready to start? I think we can get to it a little early, I don't mind.”
“Sure,” Two-Bit replied with a nod, slipping his dance shoes on. “You show me what you've been workin’ on and then I’ll follow along.”
Darry went to go set up the music, then returned to the centre. Just like always, he waited for it to start, and he talked Two-Bit through the moves of the dance.
“Here, when you hear the music change, you’re gonna step on the two, not the one like you normally would…” He went through the steps easily, ending in a pose that he’d admittedly had to adjust to look a little less lame with only one person. “Got it?”
Two-Bit, to his credit, only looked a tiny bit puzzled. “...Maybe? Show me one more time and I’m sure I’ll get it.”
Darry shrugged. “Sure, I can do that. Want me to go slow or do it at a normal pace?”
It took Two-Bit a moment to think about it, and when he responded, the answer wasn't either of the options that Darry was expecting. “Do it the way you danced the very first time you let me watch you.”
That one stumped Darry for a minute. “So… like I’m doing a real performance?”
Two-Bit settled himself comfortably on the floor at the front of the room. “Uh-huh.”
Well… Darry saw no reason to turn him down. He restarted the music, took a deep breath and let the melody do the heavy lifting.
He’d taken care to choreograph the dance to be not just fun to watch, but to perform, and now he saw that it had worked: he really was having a good time with it. When the music stopped and he hit the final pose with a flourish, Two-Bit exploded with exaggerated applause and cheers. Darry cracked a smile and added a dramatic little bow, just for the hell of it. Why not? “Man, you flatter me. It ain’t that good.”
“Are you jokin’? That was fantastic!” Two-Bit’s smile lit up the room, and Darry just about found himself blushing. He shook his head to clear it.
“Could’ve been better. Anyway, you think you’re about ready to try it out yourself?”
He extended a hand out to help Two-Bit up, and the other boy took it, hoisting himself up to a standing position. “Yeah, at least, I think I am.”
Darry flashed him an approving smile. “Good. Let’s try it out, then.” He moved to reset the music and then guided Two-Bit to where he needed to stand opposite him on the floor.
The first section of the dance went off without a hitch. Two-Bit must have been watching closely when Darry demonstrated, and he must really have practised, because he managed to hit even the quickest turns without stumbling or pausing too long. When they got to the dip where they’d left off last time, he was the one to initiate the lean, giving Darry a wide grin as he did so. It was a surprise, yes, but it was a good one.
The new half of the dance was slightly less put together, but then again, that was to be expected. Despite the couple of little hiccups, for his first time putting everything together, Two-Bit was doing a significantly better job than Darry had thought he would. He didn't miss a single step, although he looked to Darry for guidance a few times, and he was almost perfectly in time with the music.
Glory, this whole thing was doing wonders for how good Darry thought he was as a dance teacher.
As they drew nearer to the end of the dance, Darry figured that Two-Bit might get tripped up on the ending pose, considering he had never shown him properly what it was meant to look like with two people.
Maybe he could just guide him into it? The last few steps of the dance were supposed to bring them physically closer together, after all.
They both made it to the final part, and as the singer hit his last high note, Darry turned just a smidgen closer to Two-Bit than was really necessary. Three more steps until the final pose– he stepped, stepped, and reached to place his hands on Two-Bit’s waist– and pose.
He pulled the boy closer to set the pose, but he must have tugged just a bit too hard, because their chests pressed together and Two-Bit fell into him and oh fuck, Darry looked down just as Two-Bit looked up and they ended up crushed together, lips brushing for one split second.
Oh fuck oh shit oh fuck oh shit oh FUCK!!
Darry stepped back quicker than anything, fumbling to give Two-Bit as much space as he could. He was certain his face was redder than the boy’s hair. Christ, couldn't he have been more careful? That had been downright embarrassing. “Sorry,” he tried, the word coming out stilted and awkward.
Two-Bit stood in front of him for a minute, not doing much at all aside from looking dazed and confused. When he came back to himself, he shook his head like he had some brain fog that needed clearing. “I– uh, I have to go.” Without another word, he grabbed his water bottle and his shoes and ran out the door.
Darry let him go. He couldn't chase after him. Shit, why had he been so clumsy with the pose? He took his time closing up the studio so that he wouldn't run into Two-Bit on the street. When he got into his truck, he didn't even bother turning on the radio, driving home in silence instead.
Soda was on the couch when he walked into the house. Thank God. Darry threw down his bag and nodded at his brother to get his attention.
“Hey, uh– somethin’ happened. We gotta talk. Please,” he added, and Soda’s eyebrows raised.
“What is it? Ain’t you s’posed to be at work?”
Darry sighed. “Guess I might have to explain a little more than I thought.”

I think in a different life time I was a computer science major because this is so fun guys
