In 1982 Ruffo Caselli was already afraid of notifications
The prophecy of "digital silence" from an artist who built talking circuits in the early 1980s
He was building circuits that "talked" on their own. No code. No network. No endless batteries. Just wires, salvaged chips, and intuition.
But he wasn’t doing it only to celebrate technology. He was doing it to warn us.
Ruffo used to say: "One day these machines will talk too much. And we will no longer know how to be silent."
He called it "digital silence". 40 years ago. Before WhatsApp, before email.
Look at these works from the early 1980s. They are not circuit boards. They are warnings. Circuits mounted on canvas, painted, exhibited like icons. Because Ruffo saw in the chips the same thing we see today: a new religion.
Castelli in New York didn’t get it. He said: "The world is not ready". Today the world is tired. Tired of noise.
And Ruffo’s prophecies arrived right on time.
