June 29th, 1985

London

Weirdly enough, as he let his body move to the chants and shouts and let himself be transported by the crowd, Sirius thought about his mother. Walburga had after all always been adamant that pride was a virtue, a virtue Sirius was extremely lacking in, given the fact he couldn't care less about the family history, or even less about their allegiance to the pureblood rethoric. But now the war was over, Walburga was dead along with most of the people who shared her ideas and Sirius's favourite thing actually turned out to be pride. Well, Pride with a capital P, to be precise.

He looked around at the crowd, the people smiling, chanting, even shouting. The people he loved, his people, strangers and friends alike. He spotted Marlene and Dorcas kissing under the cardboard sign they were holding up with COULD'VE VOTED THAT BLOODY WOMAN - CHOSE TO BE A LESBIAN INSTEAD. Peter was almost lost in the middle of a group of towering drag queens, his collection bucket overflowing and a wide grin on his face. James was carefully stirring Lily away from the police while keeping steady on his shoulders a very excited Harry who was sporting a t-shirt with MY UNCLES ARE GAY AND THAT'S OKAY on it. As for Remus, Sirius only had to look at the end of his arm to find him, his fingers interlaced with his, a grin on his face while he was enthusiastically speaking in Welsh with some of the miners marching by their side.

Sirius looked up at the clear London sky and smiled once more. Yes, Pride was what was important.

“So. How was your date?”

Regulus did a double-take at Potter’s question, shocked that the older boy’d even known about his plans the past weekend. He shouldn’t have been so surprised, though. For some reason, James Potter seemed to know everything there was to know about everyone in Hogwarts.

He glowered. “He was a half hour late. And then he asked me to pay for the meal,” he murmured, not wanting to relive the awful experience. He still wasn’t sure why he’d agreed to go out with the other boy in the first place. Probably because he’d been trying to forget about the actual feelings he had for a certain dark-haired, bespectacled Gryffindor…

Potter winced. “Ouch. Red flag.”

Regulus snorted. “Needless to say, I won’t be seeing him again.”

“You could date me, instead.”

Regulus’s stomach fell out of his arse, as it frequently did when James said things like that. But, saving face as he always did, he scoffed, rolling his eyes. “Sure, alright. Pick me up at eight.”

This time, though, James didn’t back down. “Reg…” he murmured, eyes full of sincerity. 

“What?” he hissed, refusing to make eye contact, his whole body tense.

“Can you just put me out of my misery already?”

He turned, shocked at the other boy’s tone. “The fuck do you mean? You’re the one who’s been joking about this for ages, James, I can’t–”

“I haven’t been joking. Not once.”

Regulus gaped, gaze zeroing in on James’s expression, trying to sense any insincerity in his words. But he found none.

So he swallowed and braced himself. “Fine. Saturday. Eleven.”

The Gryffindor lit up like the sun. “Wait–really?”

“Yeah. Just–I swear to Salazar, if you’re a minute late, Potter–”

But James was too busy grinning so wide Regulus could see his molars. “I won’t, I swear! In fact–I’m going to go downstairs and wait by your common room now!” He began to run off, leaving Regulus wide-eyed.

“James! It’s only Wednesday!”

I kind of love the interpretation that Regulus didn’t leave the Death Eaters because he had a sudden moral awakening. He left because Voldemort offended the dignity of the House of Black by mistreating Kreacher.

It fits perfectly with my belief that the Black family, including the non-evil ones, are fundamentally a bunch of petty bitches. Regulus dying over a point of pure aristocratic offence is honestly very on brand 😂

It was bound to happen. Years of pining, years of watching Sirius move from girlfriend to girlfriend, years to accept that at least until they finished Hogwarts he would keep being in love with him. And to top it all off, it was April 1st. So, when Sirius finished telling him he fancied him, Remus burst out laughing.

"April Fool's, nice one Pads," he said, doing his very best not to listen to his heart shattering somewhere.

"What? Oh no, fuck, I didn't even look at the date Moony!" Sirius groaned.

"Yeah, sure, like I'm going to believe one of the best pranksters of our year," Remus scoffed, pointing at the empty dorm. "Are Prongs amd Wormy hidden under the Cloak somewhere?"

"No, they're on the Quidditch pitch, they knew I had something important to talk to you about... And anyway it isn't even a funny prank, why would I do something like this?"

"Ego boost?" Remus shrugged. "Making sure you have all the girls and all the gay guys fall at your feet?"

"Not even I am that self-centred!"

Remus raised a single eyebrow and Sirius groaned.

"I had so many possible scenarios in my head about how this could go... You not believing me wasn't one."

"You dated four different girls in the past three months and now not only I'm supposed to believe you like guys all of a sudden but me?"

"Have you been skipping your self-esteem sessions with Pete?" Sirius frowned, then he sighed, sitting down on Remus's bed. "I... I think I'm bi, actually."

Something got stuck in Remus's throat, something tasting disgustingly like hope. He swallowed.

"Bi?"

"Bisexual people exist Moony, don't be bigoted."

"I know they exist, it's just... You never said anything."

Sirius shook his head and Remus got closer.

"How long have you known?"

"I think since me and Prongs started practicing kissing back in third year," Sirius snorted. "Not a very straight thing to do, you know?"

"No, not really," Remus chuckled, memories of his two tries of practicing kissing with Lily since given their zero attraction to the other's gender it wouldn't count coming back.

"But then I started going out with girls, so I forced myself to stop thinking about it..."

"But you liked them, right?"

"Oh yes, absolutely. But the truth is, no matter how much I like them or am attracted to them, I am in love with you."

"Me?" Remus's voice was strangled.

"I think since the moment I got sorted into Gryffindor and I was sitting at the table in the Great Hall, wishing I would drop dead before my parents found out and you got sorted and immediately marched to my side and took my hand in yours. I felt safe then."

"Sirius..." Remus's hands moved of their own accord, taking Sirius's. "I love you too."

"You do?"

"Since the second I opened the door compartment on our very first ride to Hogwarts I think."

"Five whole years."

Remus looked down at their hands intertwined, the sight almost unbelievable.

"We've lost so much time," he whispered.

"No, we haven't," Sirius got closer. "And in any case, let's not waste another second."

Remus didn't even have time to think before Sirius's lips were on his.

Kindness

Times were difficult, Remus knew. Danger was closing in from every direction, and distrust, hatred even, was threatening to split them apart. Sometimes he didn't believe Sirius. Sometimes Sirius didn't believe him. Sometimes all that held them together was the fear of being alone. And yet, it was a new low, when Sirius didn't come to bed, sitting in the window instead, staring out into the night, even though Remus had to leave in the morning, and there was no saying if and when he could come back.

“Don't you love me anymore?” he asked in hurt, and Sirius smiled. This careful, horribly painful smile of someone saying goodbye.

“Remus... In times like this loving is not kindness.” He stood and came closer, hovering his hands over the planes of Remus' body. “It's selfish. If I was kind, I'd let you go long ago. But I can't. I love you. Deeply, selfishly, anxiously. I just... try not to make it any harder.”

Remus balled his fists. Not because he wanted to hit anything, but because it felt like he had been. People always told him that Sirius was not that deep, that all he'd ever be was facade. People were so damn stupid. “Come to bed love. I am just as selfish as you, and I want this body next to mine, no matter what.” He didn't even know what was better – the relieved smile, or the weight of another dipping the mattress, until they rolled together like they were meant to be.

small tips for Enjoying Being Alive from someone who went from wanting to die to genuinely loving life. these won't fix your life but they'll make it a lot easier to want to live day by day. I promise.

tell yourself things you do not believe. it feels stupid at first but I've done this for years and now I believe it when I say "I'm good at this" or "I love myself" or "I deserve good shit!"

make a note of every mundane good thing that happens to you. mental or literal notes! could be as little as "the sky is a nice shade of grey, it's calming" or "I ate a piece of fruit today, I'm looking after myself" or "I talked to a friend". again, feels stupid at first, but I genuinely believe this is part of why I have so many "good days". trick your brain into storing things in your long-term memory that you wouldn't otherwise remember.

diet deficiencies can make you properly miserable. your physical health impacts your mental health more than you'd think. get some vitamins, some omega-3s and so on. whether from food or supplements. they can make quite a difference! your brain is responsible for a LOT of the way you feel, and giving it the fatty acids it needs to function at its best can go a long way.

I know these all sound like stupid junk people who have never wanted to die tell you. I know they sound like dumb "self-help" tips written by people who have suffered mild anxiety at worst.

they're coming from someone who had multiple daily panic attacks for half a decade. someone who genuinely felt like he did not deserve to live. someone who hated himself so much he convinced himself he was irredeemably evil. someone who loves being alive these days, even though it's difficult sometimes.

you truly don't have to follow any of this advice. but just read through. store it in the back of your mind. come back to it when you want. best of luck. [:

These are genuinely great! If I can add a small comment it would be to try to change scenery every now and then, take a different route home and go for walks. And make appointments to meet your friends!

ABSOLUTELY. anytime I feel myself descending into a slump where everything feels wrong and bad and gross and hard, I go on a Weird Walk. I choose a familiar destination (the dairy, the beach, a specific hill) and intentionally choose a route I've never tried before. it's crazy but it makes me feel better almost instantly, even if the new walk is worse than my usual route. your brain CRAVES new stimulation! you are a member of a species with one of the most active brains in the animal kingdom. please try not to live like a hamster.
