Looking for fanfic readers who identify as asexual or aromantic

Hello! I’m a university student, and for my senior project this quarter I am studying fanfiction and asexuality/aromanticism.

I’m looking for anyone who identifies anywhere on the asexual or aromantic spectrum, reads fanfiction, and would be willing to talk about their experiences with me.

If you would be interested, please let me know! Even if you don’t think you have much to say, I would love to hear from you! And feel free to send me a message with any questions you might have about this project. Aromantic doesn't mean against romance, it means experience romantic orientation differently than an alloromantic person does. Some aros still want/have romantic relationships, some still fall in love. It doesn't make you any less aro.

I think some people had some trouble with this post. And instead of answering every single ask on it (it's just three but still), I'm just going to say aromanticism also includes people who are still romantic in some ways.

There is a misconception that aromanticism means against romance, someone who doesn't like romance, someone who is anti romance, etc. Some aro people still engage in romance. Some still fall in love. Their experiences doing so as aros are still important aromantic experiences to talk about and shed light on. (And let's be clear too, when an aro person goes through these experiences they do not go through them the same way an alloromantic person does. Someone who is demiromantic, for example. and falls in love is still experiencing their romantic orientation differently than an alloromantic person would.)

And for a lot of these aro people they feel alienated from the aro community, or feel like they aren't allowed to participate in the community or identify with it. This post was made for them to make them feel more included.

I did very carefully word it to say some. Not all, not many, but some. This isn't at all saying this is an experience all or even most aros can relate to. And it's OK if the way you experience aromanticism includes being less romantic or non-romantic at all (and I have plenty of posts for that too), but please be careful you're not excluding other ways of being aro too.

I’m sure someones already said this but I often see Tumblr described as a hellsite. This is fundamentally incorrect.

Tumblr is the faesite. Everybody is super confused and lost, you keep running into random places. Somehow you end up stuck there forever after interacting a couple of times. The people are all strange, everybody simultaneously seems to be from the future and the past as if time is meaningless.

My dear lgbt+ kids (and supporters), 

Imagine you travel by train and suddenly become witness to some uncomfortable interaction: 

An adult man sits down next to a teenage girl and says sexually suggestive things to her. A group of people loudly makes racist jokes about a black passenger. Someone shouts the f-slur at a gay couple. 

You would probably want to do something about it - and at the same time, you may be scared to insert yourself in a situation like that. Directly telling the creep “Shut up and leave them alone” might just make them angry and make it even worse. If you walk up to the victim and ask “Do you need help?”, they may just say no - because they’re too embarassed or they don’t want to escalate the situation, or even because they’re “frozen” (some people freeze when they’re in shock and scared). And of course you may also worry about your own safety. 

A good alternative to “Shut up” or “Do you need help” is simply this: “Hello”. 

Strike up a conversation with the victim without even acknowleding the creep. You can pretend you know them (”Hello Jessica! How are you? I haven’t seen you in ages”) but you can also just go for random small-talk. Ask them for the time, talk about the weather, whatever. Just talk to them. It’s okay to keep it simple: When overwhelmed or in shock, it’s actually easier to reply to yes/no questions. 

Why? There are multiple benefits: 

- You simply distract the creep. Sometimes that’s all it takes for them to shut up! 

- Creeps often seek out people who are by themselves. By talking to the person, you subtly show them that this person is not alone and is not an easy target. You remind them that people are watching. 

- You also remind the victim that they are not alone and might “un-freeze” them. They may feel powerless. By offering conversation, you place the power back in their hands. 

- By offering friendly conversation, you indirectly offer the victim a chance to say what they need now (someone who will walk them to a different seat, someone to alert security, a phone to call their parents or a friend so they can pick them up from the train station etc)… without putting them on the spot by directly asking them.

This is also good if you’re meeting an Orthodox Jewish person who’s not the same gender as you!  Not all Orthodox Jews hold by this restriction, and many consider it a permissible exception to shake hands in a formal greeting context; I’d guess this is parallel to Ms. Soueidan’s last-quoted tweet above.  And as that says, the sensible thing is to wait for initiation.
