Why I NEED Elain and Lucien to leave the Night Court.
Has it ever crossed your mind that the Night Court is controlling Lucien through the mating bond?
Because it just hit me and I’m… not feeling too great about it.
I have realized that Lucien’s relationship with the Night Court is entirely one-sided: They benefit from him, but he does not benefit from them.
They treat his ties to other courts as though his loyalty can't be trusted, or paint him like he's just sneaky or a "clever fox."
Those ties to Spring, Autumn, The Human Lands, Vassa & Jurian, and even (eventually) Day are all quite convenient when they need them to be, however.
They mock the Band of Exiles, but they won't welcome him into their fold or make him feel like he belongs. But they also won’t let him go.
Because who do they have in the Night Court, despite Nesta saying that Elain would love Spring, despite Cassian noting that Night Court black does not suit her?
She is not thriving and they know it. But if they have Elain with them, they have a useful pawn in Lucien. And the SADDEST PART is that he still isn’t even given real, unguarded, access to Elain.
Just enough proximity to keep him coming back. Perhaps they can't stand being in the same room because they are constantly watched or studied or picked apart?
And let’s not forget: Feyre and Rhys know about Helion. They know Lucien has another father. Another court. Potentially a shot at a real place to call home.
Yet they do not tell him.
Because what happens if Lucien knows? What happens if his loyalty shifts? What happens if he goes to Day? What happens if the male they have been keeping in orbit suddenly has somewhere else to belong?
Feyre was so happy that Lucien’s mating bond with Elain helped pull him away from Tamlin and Spring. She ADMITTED that. So as long as Elain is in the Night Court, Lucien has a reason to stay polite, useful, and careful.
This ALSO makes Rhys telling Azriel to stay away from Elain feel even more calculated.
Sure, there are concerns about blood duels and all that. But if Azriel interferes and Lucien finally gives up, the Night Court loses an emissary with close ties to multiple courts. They lose an asset. They lose a valuable political pawn.
They don’t actually want Lucien in their world. They just want him close enough to use.
