I’ve not sharped this plane for a while, until this week. I threw together a quick setup area to sharpen using my water stones. Do you have a special technique you use? I like Rob Cosman’s methods and of course the ruler trick from David Charlsworth. During my last project, the live edge bench, I used the @festool_usa 575716 ETSC 125 18V brushless hybrid sander. Here I’m using the battery capability and at this point I had been sanding the entire week with the tool. At the very end when I was leveling the leg, the first battery died. I’m really impressed with the battery life on these. I can convert to corded at any point if I want as well! For the 9 hole pattern sanding pads, I went with @seriousgrit sanding pads and well, you’ve seen the finish on this bench already! Have any of you tried this sander or pads? Switching back to focusing on the live edge bench, I used the Festool domino to attach the trapezoid leg. I decided to chamfer the legs and got carried away and I’m glad I did because the boxy edges wasn’t doing it for me. I think it was picnic table meets sophistication and it wasn’t happening. Looks much better. Interesting glue up here. I wrestled a bit before I realized I could clamp from the bottom of the leg, anyway, I’m enjoying this project and glad I’m making more progress. Designed night stands and things are coming along nicely. Took my #makita cordless router and created the dado for the night stand shelf. Was able to the @veritas_woodworking router plane to use to clean it up. Nice fit. What are you using to join larger panels? Working with some mighty thick stock for a pair of #nightstand from hard maple. Panels are lookin pretty rough at the moment after milling due to a few chips in my planer blade but they will come together brilliantly. Enjoyed this step and the glue up. Nice squeeze out! I’m so amazed by the router sled results. After getting that first face flat, I duplicated that face on the other side using my 15” planer. I know most of you get this process but for those that don’t, this may help you in some way. I’ll be using the jointer for the first edge face and then duplicate that face on the table saw to get it all completely square. Opinion time! What are your thoughts on the maple legs? I was thinking of a full trapezoid initially but wanted input. I was able to get the glue up complete yesterday for the waterfall bench! I think it turned out great. The opposite end will need to have a wider base in order to make this thing stable but I’m happy with how it’s coming together. • Ideas on a base? Remember the slab flattening? Here is the progress on that baby slab. I have some epoxy fill to do for the holes, then attaching the opposite leg with maple.
