you have GOT to be able to admit when youβve believed something bigoted in order to improve as a human being. like you NEED to be able to handle that if you want to act in line with your values
I just want to add that bigotry is a marble layercake, it's not a black and white infographic of good versus bad. Some bigotry is up front, "Oh, why do I assume that particular accent makes that person sound stupid?" and easy to point out to yourself Some bigotry is more hidden, "I feel unsafe in certain locations, despite no signs of danger" which could very well not be bigotry but you gotta get in the habit of questioning those knee jerk reactions before just blindly assuming you're having them for valid reasons A lot of bigotry is just stuff you learned and never unlearned, so when it's pointed out to you your first response is NO! THAT'S A REAL THING I LEARNED! the best antidote to this is learning that we are all ignorant gits and lifelong learners, and it's ok to be wrong. Learn to laugh at yourself and you'll have less hard of a time unlearning stuff I promise

okay so spock (the alien in blue) essentially goes into heat. like literal heat like an animal. Anyway, spockβs in bloodlust in this episode and must go back to vulcan to have sex with his finace (or someone. but its supposed to be his fiance) or heβll literally die. this is called pon farr and some backstory spock is half human and thought he wouldnt go through pon farr so he abandoned his HOT fiance to fuck around in space except oops pon farr happens so. he and kirk (in yellow getting his tits cut open, heβs also spocks captain and best friend) and their other friend mccoy go to vulcan so he can have sex with his fiance or get married or whatever so he doesnβt die. but then spockβs fiance (tβpring) is like no i dont want to marry spock i want to have him fight someone to death (which she can do) and spock at this point is fully in the βblood lustβ and is basically not in his right mind and doesnt get whatβs happening. and tβpring picks kirk to be her βchampionβ in the fight (her logic is that if spock dies in the fight she doesnt have to marry him and if kirk dies, spock will be so upset with her he wonβt marry her anymore anyway). anyway kirk doesnt know that its a fight to the death and so heβs like of course iβll do this fight if itβll help spock and then he gets told itβs a fight to the death and he goes WHAT and right afterwards spock slices his titties open like in the gif. also eventually spock and kirk roll around in the sand and kirk fakes his death and THIS somehow knocks spock out of his blood lust and he goes back to the ship super sad bc heβs killed his βbest friendβ only to discover kirkβs alive and we see one of his biggest smiles of the series (a big deal bc spock is vulcan and they dont show emotion). anyway this aired as the season opener in 1967. know your history and all that happy pride

Hereβs a gigantic African land snail (Lissachatina glutinosa) to brighten your day! πFound in parts of eastern Africa including Malawi and Tanzania, this jumbo gastropod can grow up to 5.9 in (15 cm)βmaking it one of the worldβs largest snails! This critter inhabits forest edges as well as river and lake shores. Itβs a member of the Achatinidae family, which includes a number of similarly sized snails, some of which have become invasive species outside of their natural ranges.

Story Time:
Working in retail is really fun, and the times when major fuck-ups happen, they can be either anxiety-attack inducing, or make it possible to get through the rest of your god-awful shift with a smile depending on the customer. My all-time favorite absolute fuck-up is as follows:
This kind woman is just doing her thing. She scans her membership card from her keychain. The register beeps to acknowledge the scan. We continue as usual. Neither of us notice right away, but after Iβve scanned a few more items, I hear a very quiet, βUm,β from the lady, very polite. I look at her. She is looking at the screen of my register, blinking. I, too, look.
And lo and behold. There is a charge of over four-thousand dollars ($4,000) worth of garlic bread staring us in the face. There are no words for a minute. Weβre justβ¦ in awe. How did this happen? How the hell did this happen?
She didnβt even have garlic bread in her cart.
I sputter a partial apology - I was incapable of forming actual sentences in the moment - and try to void the garlic bread. Since there was no garlic bread to scan, I try to manually remove $4,000-some from this transaction.
Well, the registers donβt like it when you try to void off more than five dollars ($5) from a transaction, so naturally it pings my manager for confirmation, but sheβs not by her pager.
At this point, both myself and the lady are justβ¦ dumbfounded. Sheβs not even mad. Iβm not even all that embarrassed. Both of us are just looking at the screen. Thereβs a bit of laughter, but itβs mostly justβ¦ confusion.
I have to call through the whole store for my manager on the intercom because sheβs not answering. She shows up, ready to override and void it, when she too, sees what exactly is being voided.
βWhatβ¦ did you do?β
βI genuinely. Have literally. No. Idea.β
She voids it, and I go to finish the transaction and tell the woman her total (minus the garlic bread). My register pings. It tells me that she hasnβt scanned her membership card. Odd. I distinctly remember her doing that. The woman goes to scan her card again, and I notice that her library card is stuck to her membership card. I tell her gently, and she separates the two and scans her card.
My manager, hovering nearby still, sees this and says, βI think it mistook the barcode of her other card for garlic bread, and the remaining digits were read as the price.β
And thatβs when the laughter really came over us. There were no hard feelings at all. In fact, the woman was incredibly glad that the receipt still showed the garlic bread and the voiding of. I will remember it until the end of time, my only regret in the entire situation being that I didnβt take a damn picture, because she has proof and I donβt. But I swear to God it happened.
TDLR; Library Card Charged $4,000 of Garlic Bread.
thatβs just how valuable library cards are. each one is worth at least $4000 of garlic bread
A picture is worth a thousand words, a library card is worth $4000 worth of garlic bread, if we can figure out how many words the average library card can check out at once, we can probably work out a picture-to-garlic bread conversion here, too.
