One day, Taylor and Lucy were eating at the Acorn Coffee Shop where Kathryn works. It was a slow night and Kathryn began to chat them up, when she learned Lucy was from Florida, her face lit up.

“How long does it take to drive from here to Florida?” Kathryn asked. “And how much do you think that it would cost for me to take my family of five to Disney World?” Then she began to cry.

“I just want that so badly,” she confessed. “I have never been anywhere but here.” Taylor and Lucy knew they had to make Kathryn’s dream come true.

In just a few weeks, the school raised almost $7,000 to send Kathryn and four of her family members to Disney World.

Accidental Discovery: Orange Peels Could Suck Mercury Out of Oceans

Scientists in Australia accidentally stumbled on a substance that can remove toxic mercury from the sea. It’s called limonene, and can be found in any orange peel.

Dr. Justin Chalker, a professor of Synthetic Chemistry at Flinders University, and his team, were working with sulfur and limonene to create a red, rubber-like polymer. When they began running tests to measure its potentially harmful impact on the environment, they discovered quite the opposite — the substance can suck mercury right out of water.

“It literally grows on trees,” Chalker told ABC News.

A Doctor Who Practices “Street Medicine” Named Top Hero of 2015

For more than 20 years, Dr. Jim Withers has walked the streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, going where the homeless go, to bring them free, quality medical care. He calls it “street medicine.”

When he first started, he’d camouflage himself to blend in with the people he sought to help. By wearing worn-out clothes and rubbing dirt in his hair, he hoped to win the trust of homeless people on the streets and under bridges of the city.

Today, they know him and trust him with their lives, which he works to heal.
