Hey, so I know I haven't posted any writing in awhile, but I wanted to come back to make a little announcement. For the past year and a half or so, I've been putting together my own poetry collection! A lot of it is just some of the writing that I've posted here, but there are some original pieces that I've never shown anyone before.
The reason I'm bringing it up now is because I think I'm ready to actually have it published. It's not the biggest book, nor is it probably all that good, but it is mine and this is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time. It's called "I Have No Idea What I'm Doing", because well, I don't. It's going to be self-published through Amazon (thanks daddy Bezos) and I was going to have a ebook and physical version. I haven't nailed down pricing yet, or pinned down the exact publication date, but both will be coming soon.
Again, I know I haven't been very active on here, but I just want to get the word out as much as possible. I don't exactly expect this to put me on the New York Times bestseller list, but if just a few people pick it up and feel something reading it, then it will have been worth it. I'll try to give more details once I figure them out. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Low Battery
I am a battery ready to leak all of its acid
I’ve been drained so many times
It’s a miracle that I’m ever able to recharge
The world may think that I just keep going
With no signs of stress
But when everything powers down
I dream of the day when I’m finally tossed away
My contents spilling out into some bin
And another sucker taking my place
.
I don’t envy my eventual replacement
Let them be sucked of their life and repeatedly resurrected
I’ll be the one corroding the plastic I rest on
And lounging with soiled napkins
Not a care in the world
Not an outlet in sight
Just me and an everlasting blanket of night
Cycle Complete
Man, I’m filthy
I think I’ll put myself in the dishwasher
With the pasta stained plates and glasses splattered with spoiled milk
I want to listen to the woes of every fork and knife that’s been
Beaten and scraped
Scalded and frostbitten
The ones that have reverted from sophisticated utensils
To a brutish means to an end
When the soapy deluge cleanses us of our grime
We will hide our tears in the torrent
And hope to come out with a fraction of the shine
That we had when we were sharp and full of wit
DIY
I'm creating castles out of candy wrappers and coke bottles
In a desperate attempt to assemble some semblance of a home
I'm bolting from room to room with buckets wedged under my arms
Trying to keep the kitchen from becoming an unwanted lake
Of soggy bread and spoiled meat
The nails jutting out of the floorboards
Are a constant piercing reminder of the work that needs to be done
Before I can say I've built a home
But until then I'll keep peeling away wallpaper
And paint with pastels in the bathroom
Until then I'll keep pouring cement and wait for a palace to take shape
Because if I'm to have a place to lay my head
I will bleed for its creation
So that I may feel my soul in the foundation
Make Me in a Different Image
I envy the octopus
With its many limbs
Capable of incredible efficiency
For I am the tortoise
Large and lumbering
A piece of driftwood
Caught in the same beating current
.
I envy the falcon
With its tremendous wings
As it sails through the skies
I am resigned to the dirt
Another worm to be wasted
Or to become the land I trod
.
I envy the stars
Living a life of burning ferocity
Great lanterns of the aether
Until their magnificence becomes too great to bear
And they depart in one final display
Of divine destruction
.
I can only hope
To leave with such captivating grace
Happy Today
I'm writing to you, birthdays
I will no longer partake in your parties and pleasantries
You can't coat me in frosting and sprinkles
Stick a flame on my head
And call it another year anymore
Put the screaming kids back in their cages
And kick these cowards that just remembered I exist in the ass
Put a bouncy house in my backyard and I'll bounce a baseball bat off your bumper
Because if my birthday is the only day worth celebrating the life that I've lived
Then every little thing that I do to keep living must not matter
.
Because while everyone might bust out the fireworks and piñatas for the destination
No one ever gives so much as a fuck for the journey
For the clawing through mud with bloodied fingers
For the crimson-cracked eyes from nights never slept in
For the black and blue back that bears the beatings of another day
.
I'm done being celebrated for how shiny and sharp I can look once a year
Like a knife that only gets used on Thanksgiving
You know the one
Fuck a happy birthday
Because today is as much of a blessing as any
Hell, I'll even make up a new song
.
Happy Today to you
Happy Today to you
Every moment that you are a patron of this Earth is precious and important
And we sincerely hope you'll stay to see tomorrow
Happy Today to you
.
Yeah, I know it's a little wordy
But I think it'll catch on
Average Joe
When you look in the Bible and see the name Joseph
You're told the story of Jesus' forgotten stepfather
One half of the team that is responsible for creating both
One of the most recognizable religions in history and the catalyst for countless wars
.
When you look in a history book and see the name Joseph
You'll likely read about the mustachioed man that ruled Russia with an iron fist
Capturing countries in his communist cage
But to his credit, Stalin did have one hell of a mustache
.
When you look in the basement of a South Jersey home
That's been built in the most forgettable part of Camden County
You'll see a Joseph splayed out across a couch that was originally intended to seat at least four people
And that Joseph is me
.
To say that I was named Joseph in an effort to embody some important figure
Would be giving my father too much credit
You see, like a mother-in-law around Christmas, I came into my parent's lives much earlier than anticipated
And although I may not know all of the details, I'm sure my dad wanted a name that would be easy to remember
So he went with his own
.
What's in a name?
I can assure you it's not the sweet smell of roses.
For me it more closely resembles the metallic tang of blood on freshly scraped knees
Busted open because of my inability to manage my endlessly elongating legs
.
Because if Yosef in Hebrew is meant to mean "he will add"
Then for me it must mean he will add as many scars to his body as possible
Especially if it highlights his embarrassing lack of grace
.
And if I have ever truly added
Then I must only be able to add up numbers on a scale
As I eat enough Skittles to make me hate myself
Or perhaps I'm only able to add cracks
To the heart that I have stapled to my sleeve
Gifting it to those that would see it torn to tatters
.
If there's one thing I do know
It's that I have subtracted from myself so often
That I hardly recognize the Joe that I used to be
.
My Skittles-induced physique has been replaced
By a reed-thin frame
That could blow away on a stiff breeze
.
The blood on my knees is long dried and washed away
But my carelessness is born anew in the form of
Fresh cuts and faded scars criss-crossing trembling hands
.
When my father named me Joseph
I'm sure he envisioned me as an extension of himself
I'm sure he thought of me as an addition to a recently acquired ranch house
A garage to park his presumed notion of who I will be
A younger version of himself-
With a chest as wide as a barrel of Jim Beam Bourbon
Arms like artillery shells capable of caving in a garage door
And calloused hands the size of catcher's mitts
.
Imagine his disappointment when Joseph Jr.
Rolled out of the garage with-
A chest so narrow you can play my ribs like a xylophone
Arms more akin to al dente angel-hair pasta than weapons of destruction
And with hands silky smooth save for the faint marks left behind from choking my pen
Until it puts a poem on the page
.
This Joseph won't become a part of scripture
Or grow a mustache capable of starting a Cold War
Or live up to the lofty expectations of his Senior
But if there's one thing that I intend to do especially if it kills me
It's to live a life all my own
When Life Gives You
Juice me and make me sweet
Balance my bitterness with two cups of
"Get over yourself" and
Pour my cloudy soul into a pitcher
Sell me for two bucks a glass
It's more than I think I'm worth anyway
.
Allow me to support your cooked spaghetti spine
Mix me with bottom shelf Beelzebubs
Crafted by basement bartenders
I am the buzzing bee you feel in your brain
When a glance across the room arrests you
And I am the aftertaste that rests on your tongue
When your morning starts in a bed other than your own
.
Bring me to your mom's house for dessert
She'll never understand the hours
You spent beating me into a desirable form
The many elements you added to make me more palatable
The precise calculations you conducted to
ensure my exterior was exquisite
So when she carelessly dismisses me as a waste of your time without so much as a bite
And you spite her by indulging in every slice of me
The sickly feeling in your stomach is shared
.
Slice me
Peel me
Taste me on a dare
I'll be there for you in celebration and despair
Until the day I rot
And you occasionally catch hints of me in the air
Broken at Birth
I'm from a mom who could never give up her Mustangs and Marlboros
And a dad who put a leash around my throat that I'm still scratching at to this day
I'm from Dunkin' Donuts at 5:30 in the morning on the way to mom's second apartment this year
I'm from the temper of someone with none of their shit together
And someone desperately trying to keep their shit from falling apart
.
I'm from jigsaw puzzle families frantically feeling for pieces to make a pretty picture
But the only image that they've managed to invent is akin to Frankenstein's monster
A stepfather that was a little more, "put a hole in a door" than find a rational resolution to a disagreement
A half-brother that has always seemed like a stranger
And a stepmother that to her credit is one of the more reliable people in my life
But could never fully fill the cracks in my foundation
.
I'm from funerals about once every five years
And so many more that I never got to see in the time between
I'm from a sense of dread that I might be next
Because if cancer got one before she was seventy, heart failure took two in their fifties, and heroin stole another before he was twenty-one
Then it must be a matter of time until fate puts a glass over my flame and watches me suffocate
.
After all, with where I'm from
Why should I be any exception?
“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself; I am large - I contain multitudes.”
— Walt Whitman
Cheese
Take some cheese if you please
Grab a slice and take a seat
Now take the cheese that you hold in your hands
Delicate and full of vitamin D
And give it a name
I don't care if it's a dude or a dame
You can name it Judy, Johnny, Jeffrey, or Jane
Just assign your cheese an identity
So it no longer has to live in anonymity
.
I want you to stare into the cheese
And study its surface
Maybe its edges are uneven and jagged
Perhaps its appearance reminds you of Mick Jagger
Regardless, I want you to lean in close to this coagulation of milk
And relate your most vile secrets
.
Every mistake and promise broken
The darkest sides that refuse to be spoken of
And when the surface of your cheese appears discolored
I want you to devour it
And never think of it again
Fool of the Day
Make way, make way
For the fool of the day
See how they walk
Hear how they talk
But keep your judgements at bay
.
The morning will belong to this global jester
But by the afternoon they will begin to pester
As the sun sets so too will their grave
Their name forgotten once the clock strikes eight
.
Each night the streets lay silent with anticipation
As somewhere the next fool awaits their transformation
Hoping that the morning will call their lottery numbers
.
Every morning the cycle starts anew
And the fool knows exactly what to do
.
To walk the walk and talk the talk until their skin turns blue
Routine
Contacts go in every morning
Contacts come out every night
You need to learn some responsibility
They say as I spend my high school nights
Submitting applications for jobs
That require at least two years of experience
.
Contacts go in every morning
Contacts come out every night
You need to learn some responsibility
They say as I strain to remain conscious
On my daily college commute
Because to them it’s not that far
.
Contacts go in every morning
Contacts come out every night
You need to learn some responsibility
They’ll say even when I’ve long abandoned this room
And found my own place to call home
Trying
Trying to sleep once the lawnmowers start singing
Trying to sleep when the pans start dancing and the eggs start screaming and the blender is brutalizing the bananas
Trying to sleep when the damn cat is at the top of the stairs and the damn dogs just sit and bark and whine and howl and fuss and swear and curse the cat's name
Trying to sleep when the person laying next to you, angelic and sweet, also has your arm pinned down and your shoulder aches and the blood in your fingers has vacated the premises and you want some kind of reprieve you want some kind of release no you need to escape or else this couch will be your left arm's final resting place; but even then you are a righty, so what's the worst that could happen?
Raccoon
Shadows paint the fences
Of this placid patch of suburbia
While the denizens rest
And the garden gnomes watch
Masked miscreants begin their conquest
Weaving their way through the yards
They are a tornado of clamoring hands and salivating mouths
When morning comes and the storm has passed
The only evidence of their visit
Is the sideways trash cans and candy wrappers in the grass
