My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage.
Alice Hoffman (via onlinecounsellingcollege)
In case your upbringing taught you otherwise, you are allowed to enjoy yourself. You are allowed to do things that make you happy. It’s not lazy or wrong to take the time to do the things that make you feel good. My parents taught me that I wasn’t allowed to be happy or do things that I love. And that’s not ok. Give that new hobby a go. Draw/paint/sew/cook that thing. It’s not a waste of time. Your pleasure isn’t a waste of time. You are allowed to smile and have fun. And don’t feel bad for it.
How to create romantic couples with chemistry
Writing couples is both enchanting and exhausting. How do you make people ship your couple? How do you make them an OTP? How do you make your couple matter to the story? Or matter at all? To answer all these questions, I’ll explain three major must-have characteristics for couples:
1. Realism
Falling in love is a slow process. It’s different from person to person. People are flawed. Relationships are flawed. People make mistakes. People fear rejection. Not everyone will find their soulmate exactly when they need most. People show love in different ways. People are not flirty all the time. Realism is important. Development is essential. When writing a couple, visualize yourself as one of the characters (or both). Imagine their love story as if it was happening to you in real life. See how different it goes? Maybe not as fast and a thousand times clumsier, but also charming and interesting.
Example of strong realism: Carl and Ellie (UP), they take a lifetime to mature their love and mutual respect. Neither are perfect. The relationship goes through bad times, but their love only grows.
Example of weak realism: Caine and Jupiter (Jupiter Ascending), they fall in love in two or three days, not enough scenes are dedicated to developing the relationship. In the end, it feels strange.
2. Balance
Give your couple opposite but complementary features. This is basically the Yin-yang symbolism that a lot of stories shows. If one character is all love-and-peaceful, maybe the other is a furnace of anger. If one traveled the whole world, maybe the other never left their village. If one is a millionaire, maybe the other is homeless. If one is short with dark hair, maybe the other is tall with light hair. However, no matter how opposite they are, always keep the balance. One shouldn’t overshadow the other. They must shine together, but also as individuals.
Example of strong balance: Fix-it Felix Jr. and Sargent Calhoun (Wreck-It Ralph), they belong to different worlds, they would probably never meet. He is a sweet pie that always tries his best, a peacemaker. She is, on the other hand, an explosion, a warrior. They are both relevant in achieving victory. Also, both are the heroes of their own games.
Example of weak balance: Sasuke and Sakura (Naruto), he is way more powerful than her, he doesn’t respect her as a ninja, he doesn’t like working with her. He tried killing her more than once and was never sorry about that. She accepts being overshadowed. She lacks character development compared to Sasuke. There is no opposite-complementary features tying them. It’s unbalanced.
3. Synergy
Make them work together. Make them accomplish common goals. Make them a power duo. Make them laugh of the same jokes. Make it easy and natural for them to be together, talking, sharing and having a good time. Make their conversations flow. Make it easy to touch, and stare, and embrace, and kiss. Make their mind and body work together.
Example of strong synergy: Cat Noir and Ladybug/Adrien and Marinette (Miraculous Ladybug), they are the heroes of Paris. No, they are partners in saving the world. It doesn’t feel uncomfortable when they interact, fight and save each other. It feels right. It feels natural. You crave for interactions.
Example of weak synergy: Kim Tan and Eun-Sang (The Heirs), they are the type of couple that are always fighting, but sometimes indulge in a passionate kiss. However, there’s no synergy between these characters. They are never on the same page. They are never partners. The magic of their relationship never sparkles. Even their kisses are uncomfortable to watch.
Now, think of your favorite couples (even non-canon ones) and try spotting the realism, the balance and the synergy in them. If you ship it,I’m pretty sure it’s there.
Try applying these characteristics to your next writing.
Never Say Never
Anon sent the prompt: “Trevelyan learning she’ll never be able to carry pregnancies to term due to injuries sustained during battles and overusing healing portions before she could properly heal. Cullen being a wonderful husband and helping her cope.”
Cullen Rutherford x Female Inquisitor (Angst/Fluff - 1055 words)
“What do you mean? I don’t- What are you talking about?” Her voice was pitched with panic as she stared at the healer, confused and scared.
“I’m sorry, my Lady. The injuries you’ve sustained in the past make it impossible for you to ever bear a child.” The healer’s voice was even, but his eyes showed the sympathy he felt for the young woman sitting in front of her.
“I have- I have to go.” She rose from her seat on shaky legs and rushed from the room without another word or glance back.
She didn’t meet anyone’s eye as she made her way out of the healer’s clinic; she couldn’t. It was taking every ounce of strength she possessed to keep her tears from falling; she couldn’t fake a smile for anyone right now.
She had only gone to the clinic to ask for advice on conceiving. She never imagined this would be the news she would receive. She had only wanted to be mother, but now she knew it would never happen.
Her feet moved on their own accord, carrying her through the village as she stared down at the dirt. Her right arm was wrapped tightly around herself, rubbing up and down her left, trying to calm herself.
She had done everything that had been asked of her: she had closed the breach, she had led the Inquisition, she had saved all of Thedas, and she had lost her arm in doing so. All she wanted now was a quiet life with Cullen: a small plot of land, a home to call her own, and a family. The one time she wanted something for herself and that too was taken from her.
She hadn’t realised she had made it home until she was walking through the front door. How was she going to tell Cullen? He wanted to be a father as much as she wanted to be a mother; telling him it would never happen felt impossible.
“You’re home.” Cullen rounded the corner to the entryway, a cheerful smile on his face. “How did it-” He stopped short when he saw his wife’s posture; head down, arm wrapped around herself, shoulders hunched. She may as well be curled into the fetal position on the floor.
He was at her side in an instant. He wrapped his arm snugly around her waist and led her to the sitting room sofa. He eased them down, keeping her tucked tightly to his right side. Once they were settled, he lifted his hand to cradle her head as she lowered it onto his shoulder. That was when her tears finally began to fall. He rocked them both gently, cooing softly to try to calm her.
He should have gone with her. She had been adamant that everything would be fine; she would in and out, her questions answered and then they would be ready to start trying for their child. But if she has returned in this state it must mean… He should have gone with her. She shouldn’t have been alone when she was told.
“I’m sorry, Cullen. I’m so sorry…” She sobbed, clinging to him.
He shook his head before pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Shhh… Stop. There’s nothing to aplogise for, love.” He gathered her up into his arms and pulled her into his lap. She buried her face into the side of neck instantly while he cradled her against his chest, rubbing slow, soothing circles along her back.
“We can never- we’ll never have a child.” She wailed. “It’s my fault!” She began shaking as she sobbed harder now.
He had already assumed as much, but to actually hear the words… He swallowed around the growing lump in his throat and blinked away his tears; he would be strong for her.
But still the words echoed in his mind over and over for several minutes, imagining a life with only himself, his wife, and their mabari. Never having the opportunity to raise a child, to teach them, care for them, give them all the love he and his wife possessed…
No. That would not be their life. There was more than one way to have a child.
“Who says?”
“What?” He could barely hear her as she choked out the word into his neck.
“Who says we’ll never have a child?”
She lifted her head then. She continued to tremble and her tears continued to fall as her reddened eyes met his. “The healer said-”
“The healer said you can’t get pregnant, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a child.” He explained, a gentle smile on his lips. She stared at him, her expression turning confused rather than mournful. “There is more than one way for us to have a child, love.” He added while wiping away her tears.
“I don’t- What do you mean?” Her tears had stopped now.
Cullen’s smile grew the barest amount upon seeing her befuddled expression. “How many children are living in orphanages in Thedas? How many children go to bed without a kiss goodnight and a bedtime story? There are children all over Thedas dreaming of a mother and father as much as you and I are dreaming of a child. So I ask you again, who says we won’t have a child?”
Cullen watched her lower lip begin to tremble once more as her eyes filled with tears. For a moment, he thought he had said the wrong thing – maybe she didn’t want to adopt, perhaps she thought it was lesser somehow – but then her lips turned up at the corners. She pressed herself tightly against his chest once more, her face buried in his neck as she cried, but this time tears of joy.
Cullen cradled her in his arms while he imagined the day they meet their child. Who would they be? What would they be like? How old would they be? The questions rolled around in Cullen’s mind until her soft voice broke him from his trance.
“I can’t wait to meet our child.” She whispered while peeking up at him, her smile shining brightly. Cullen returned her smile as he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.
“Neither can I.”

For Him
Cullen Rutherford x Evie Trevelyan (Angst - 713 words)
“I don’t- I don’t understand.” Cullen gaped at Evie, his amber eyes brimming with tears. “I thought… I thought…” His voice cracked as he struggled with his words, with comprehending why she was doing this.
Evie heaved a shuddering sigh as she stared at the stone of the battlements, the memory of this important spot flashing in her mind. This was where they had their first kiss. She wished they were somewhere else, anywhere else. She listened to his heavy breathing as he struggled to hold back his sobs. She kept her eyes trained on the stone. She couldn’t look at him. Not when she knew his face would be etched with far more pain than she could already hear in his voice.
“It’s better this way.” She whispered. She didn’t dare try to speak any louder; her voice would break. She would break. “P-please, don’t- don’t make this difficult.” She begged, her voice trembling. She would not cry. Not in front of him. She was the one hurting him. She would not fall apart. She had no right.
“I just want- want to understand.” Cullen reached for her but she shrunk away from his touch. Why was she doing this? Why was she leaving him like this? What had he done wrong? He let his hand fall back to his side and watched her for a moment. She almost looked like she was in pain, as much pain as he was in. Was someone making her do this? What was happening? Why was it happening?
Without warning, Cullen dropped to his knees before her. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pressed his forehead to her stomach. “Please, Evie. I love you. I’ll do anything.” He sobbed, his tears falling freely. He was beyond caring about his pride. He would not lose her. Not like this. Not now.
“S-stop this.” Evie grabbed onto his shoulders, pushing at him gently and trying to dislodge him. She couldn’t do this when he was touching her, holding her, loving her. But she needed to do this. It was better this way. She was sure of that. At least she hoped she was…
“Don’t leave me. Please. Whatever it is, we can fix it.” He wailed, his voice muffled as he buried his face into her stomach. He would change. He would do anything, absolutely anything to keep her in his arms. He needed her. He loved her more than life itself.
“I don’t love you!” Evie shrieked as she shoved him away, finally freeing herself from his grip.
She watched Cullen kneel before her, sobbing quietly. Her own tears fell as she gazed upon him, taking in the sight of his pain, his sorrow; she did this. She broke him. She could only hope in time he would realise she was right. If she was lucky, he would grow to hate her. If he hated her, he wouldn’t hurt anymore.
Evie didn’t know if she would survive this war. Everything she had faced so far, it was a miracle she was still standing now. Her luck would not hold. If she didn’t live, knowing that she had left him alone was not something she could bear. If he hated her than he could find someone else, someone who would live, who would love him the way he deserved to be loved. Someone who could give him a life – a real life – with a future and a family. That’s all he has ever wanted and his wants, his needs, his dreams have been and always will be hers.
Finally, Evie turned and began walking away. She could barely feel her body as her feet carried her further and further away from Cullen. She lifted her numb hand to her face and wiped away her tears before daring to look back at him.
He remained on he knees, his face buried in his hands and he cried. He was the only man she had ever loved, the only man she will ever love and she had hurt him so deeply. She had faith he would heal, though. He was a survivor. He had survived so much already, he would survive this too. At least, that was her hope…

GAME OVER
The aftermath:
Galathan couldnt hurt Dorian. Dorian.Dorian?
Images flashed and showed.
Smiling. Sparkling grey eyes with love. Shouting at him for being careless. Whispering on his ears. Holding his face with adoration, Crying—..
The images blurred and the real Dorian in front of him. Exhausted. Tired. Wounded and Crying.
Ah. Dorian.
The sword fell from his hand.
“Amatu—–,,,,,”
But arrows and lightning came from the sky and struck him down.
@awaari
l couldnt help it.
YOU MONSTER, I’M SUPPOSE TO DO THE HURTING, NOT YOU.

HC + map
Sketching Maps: Dorian likes to sketch maps of the places he’s been to, especially if the areas haven’t been documented yet.
Studying maps: When they are about to head out on missions, dorian will spend hours pouring over maps. Generally using the excuse, ‘the more you know the more deadly you’ll be’, and this behavior is attributed in part to his insatiable desire for knowledge. The second reason for this is so he’ll know every way an enemy could come at him and his team to better protect his comrades.
tips on how to realistically write deaf clint barton
hello, fanfiction writers! i’m making this post because i’ve seen some deaf clint barton stories going around, and there are a lot of misconceptions about hearing loss and hearing aids and all that jazz, so since i’m hard of hearing, i thought i’d bring up a few common misconceptions.
clint just reads everyone’s lips and understands exactly what people are saying. this is basically impossible. only 30% of spoken english can be lipread. for me, if i can hear your vowels and read your lips at the same time, i can typically get what you’re saying, but that’s not a guarantee. clint also wouldn’t be able to pick up lipreading overnight. that’s an acquired skill.
hearing aids! there are many different types of hearing aids, so make sure you do your research on those. there are BTE (behind the ear) hearing aids, which are the most common. then there are the RITE (receiver in the ear), CIC (completely in canal), ITC (in the canal), ITE (in the ear) hearing aids. even if you’re going to have tony stark whip up some cool state of the art hearing aids for clint, it’s helpful for you to know which style tony would be modeling these after. keep in mind that some hearing aids don’t have an off switch—the only ways to turn those hearing aids off are to take the batteries out, which you need to do every night while the hearing aids themselves chill in a dehumidifier overnight.
american sign language is just like spoken english. not true. american sign language is a complex language with its own grammar and syntax. make sure you research american sign language. watch videos, read books, learn as much as you can. you don’t have to learn the language, but familiarize yourself with it. you also can’t learn ASL overnight, so clint can’t just read a book on it and then be an expert the next day.
hearing aids fix everything and make his hearing normal. hearing aids do NOT fix everything. they HELP, they do not FIX. so even if clint wears hearing aids, his hearing will not be 100% perfect. he’ll still miss pieces of the conversation. he’ll still have to ask people to repeat themselves. not all the time, but it’ll still happen. he won’t magically become hearing because he’s wearing hearing aids. remember: they’re called hearing AIDS not hearing FIXES.
two days later, clint is back to shooting arrows perfectly. this isn’t true. when the inner ear suffers severe trauma, it freaks out. as a result of the traumatic way clint loses his hearing, he would have acute unilateral vestibulopathy. symptoms of this include: severe dizziness, nausea, blurry vision, everything moving around so his eyes would be darting about trying to make his vision be still, and possibly neck pain. his balance would be thrown way off whack, and he wouldn’t be able to walk very well after two days, let alone try to shoot a bow and arrow. typically, these symptoms last anywhere from a few weeks to a month, depending on the type of injury. but make sure you research this yourself, so you know more specific details! my really awesome friend gave me the information on this, so shoutout to her!
ok! i think i covered the most common misconceptions. if you have any further questions, and you feel comfortable asking me, go ahead! i am more than happy to answer any questions to the best of my abilities. i think it’s awesome that marvel is now incorporating a superhero that isn’t fully abled. it’s about time the rest of us got some representation. go forth, and write well!
This was really instructive and helpful. Thank you very much for enlightening us! :)
Signal boost!
ALSO.
sorry i’m reblogging this again, but i forgot a very important point. (i also went back and bolded the “headings” on the above bullet points a little bit to make it easier to read)
sign language is universal. GOD, no. sign language is NOT universal. every single country has its own sign language. american sign language is used in canada, but that’s basically the closest thing you’ll get. even then, there are different signs. hell, even if you look around america, if you look at two people from two different parts of the country, they may know two different signs for one word, depending on the region. seriously, sign language is just like any other language—you have regional jargon.
go forth (again) and write well!
can someone explain the alignment chart for me but in like, the simplest wording possible lmao
lawful good: i want to do the right thing, and following society’s rules is the best way to do that
neutral good: i want to do what’s right, and i’m willing to bend or break the rules as long as no one gets hurt
chaotic good: i’m willing to do whatever it takes as long as it’s to do the right thing
lawful neutral: following the rules of society is the most important thing, and that matters more to me than doing what’s right
true neutral: i just want myself and the people i care about to be happy
chaotic neutral: i want my freedom, and i don’t care what i have to do to keep it
lawful evil: to impede the protagonists (in whatever evil way) is my primary goal, but i follow my own code of morals even when it’s inconvenient
neutral evil: to impede the protagonists (in whatever evil way) is the my primary goal, and while i’ll do what it takes to achieve it, i also won’t go out of my way to do unnecessary damage
chaotic evil: i relish in destruction and want to do as much damage as possible while i try to achieve my primary goal
Here is a handy visual guide I made a while back. Part of my intention was to show the variety of ways that each of the alignments can be represented:
You can see/reblog my original posts here, here, and here.
BEST ALIGNMENT CHARTS EVER.
Writing a novel when you imagine all you stories in film format is hard because there’s really no written equivalent of “lens flare” or “slow motion montage backed by Gregorian choir”
You can get the same effect of a lens flare with close-detail descriptions, combined with breaks to new paragraphs.
Your slow-motion montage backed by a Gregorian choir can be done with a few technques that all involve repetition.
First is epizeuxis, the repeating of a word for emphasis.
Example:
Falling. Falling. Falling. There was nothing to keep Marie from plunging into the rolling river below. She could only hope for a miracle now, that she would come out alive somehow despite a twenty-foot drop into five-foot-deep water.
Then there’s anaphora, where you write a number of phrases with the same words at the beginning.
There were still mages out there living in terror of shining steel armor emblazoned with the Sword of Mercy.
There were still mages out there being forced by desperation into the clutches of demons.
There were mages out there being threatened with Tranquility as punishment for their disobedience, and the threats were being made good upon.
Mages who had attempted to flee, but knew nothing of the outside world and were forced to return to their prison out of need for sustenance and shelter.
Mages who only desired to find the families they were torn from.
Mages who only wanted to see the sun.
This kind of repetition effectively slows the pace of your writing and puts the focus on that small scene. That’s where you get your slow pan. The same repetition also has a subtle musicality to it depending on the words you use. That’s where you get the same vibe as you might get from a Gregorian choir.
Damn I made relatable reblog- bait post and writer Tumblr went hard with it. This is legitimately very good advice.
For more neat tricks (aka figures of rhetoric) like epizeuxis and anaphora, read THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE by Mark Forsyth. It’s both educational and delightful, not to mention overflowing with wry wit. Great book.
Yeah I always write in film format, which explains all of my fight scenes tbh.
