Tell the Bureau of Land Management: Maintain protections for Chaco Canyon

Urgent: The BLM is considering undoing protections for more than 330,000 acres around Chaco Canyon. Speak out while there is still time.

Chaco Canyon is an irreplaceable cultural landscape, home to thousands of archaeological sites, important wildlife habitat and internationally recognized dark skies. Opening the surrounding public lands to new oil and gas leasing and mining could bring roads, wells, pollution, noise and artificial light closer to everything that makes this place extraordinary.

The oil and gas produced would make only a small contribution to the nation’s energy supply, but the harm to Chaco could last for generations. Once cultural sites are damaged, habitat is fragmented or dark skies are disrupted, the damages may be impossible to reverse.

I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.

It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.

She also royally screwed over a domestic abuse charity in Edinburgh purely because the woman running it was trans and was ensuring equality for all staff, but when one of the staff got aggressive about knowing what was in a non-binary person's knickers (if you're asking "what are you *really*", that's what you're doing), it all kicked off. According to staff who worked there at the time, they were subject to harassment and threats by the affiliates of that woman.

Don't believe her when she says she cares about welfare of survivors of abuse. She brought to bear her wrath against that charity, doing unimaginable damage and causing fear and distress for the employees as well. She attacked Amnesty International and has threatened them as well.

She's also gone after neurodivergent people and ace folk as well, not to mention so many of her associates are now known affiliates of right-wing organisations. When you get this toxic in so many directions already, the sky is the limit for how bad it could get.

thinking about the time a former housemate said to me "hey I put these box fans in the living room because it's hot" while gesturing to the fans that I was actively sitting in front of because it was hot. and I said "okay thanks." and she kept standing there like she was waiting for something else so I said "am I blocking the airflow? do you need me to move?" and she said no I'm just letting you know they're here, in the living room, for circulation. and I said well yes, I did put that together. I am enjoying them. thank you. and she looked confused. so I asked "am I meant to do something with this information or are you just informing me?" and she said no I'm letting you know they're here because It's Hot In Here. she seemed a bit aggravated, and her emphasis seemed deliberate.

it took me asking three more times before she finally told me she wanted me to leave the fans where they are instead of moving them to my room or something. and I said oh! I had no intention of doing so but thank you for letting me know what the expectation is.

about a month later she brought up that conversation as the moment it actually clicked for her that I Am Autistic And Will Not Magically Intuit The Unspoken Request You Didn't Ask Me.

I have observed enough allistic communication to know that generally, if somebody points something out to you that you can already see or are already clearly interacting with, they are making an indirect request. but as I don't know what the request is, the only way forward is for me to guess (and likely get it wrong), or prompt the allistic to tell me clearly what they need.

however, allistics don't realize they do this, so asking them to say the unspoken surprises and confuses them. this is not their fault. allistics can be quite emotionally fragile and perceive directness as confrontation, so they habitually rely on indirect speech and coded language to preserve others' feelings. this is why they may find it difficult to be direct, even when asked. I have found that with enough gentle encouragement and reassurance that they are actually helping you, you too can achieve successful communication with your allistic friend or loved one. :)

Many years ago I was freaking out about something and went to a friend's home, and midway thru whatever I was doing, it clicked via something in her body language that she was Being Polite, but I had arrived at an inconvenient time (this was before cell phones, and I think I was freaking out about my new apartment with no landlines yet installed, or I swear I'd have checked first). So I said as much. "This is a bad time and you need me to go, don't you? Shit, I'm so sorry." She refused to speak to me for two weeks until I finally asked her what I'd done: she said she "knew" I was somehow mocking her by stating the indirect request. To this day, I'm not sure if she entirely believed me when I said I was not.

hi trans kiwis and friends. if you haven't seen the news, they're trying to pass a frankly insidious bill in aotearoa to define the terms 'man' and 'woman' based on biological sex. this unsurprisingly reflects a lot of similar cruel efforts happening overseas at the moment. IT HASN'T PASSED YET, but I figured I should speak up about it because this is happening as we speak.
