Erasing Cassandra Cainās disabilities is not empowering. It takes a character neurodivergent people could relate to like few others and turns her into yet another neurotypical character.
Assuming the original Cass is racist because of an article you read on the internet is not empowering. It uses fake wokeness as an excuse to be bigoted.
Inaccurately calling Cass mute is not empowering. It further erases her actual disabilities and makes Comic!Cass fans feel like you donāt care.
Saying āmaybe theyāll fix it in a sequelā is not empowering. It suggests that you either donāt understand Cassās disabilities, or you think learning disabilities can spontaneously manifest, as well as handwaving blatant ableism with the excuse that people might give a damn someday.
Saying āCathy Yan is Asian woman, so itās not ableistā is not empowering. It makes no goddamn sense. Cassandraās disabilities have NOTHING to do with her race or gender, and saying that a minority canāt be bigoted against other minorities is ludicrous.
Saying āMargot Robbie PuShEd So HaRd FoR tHiS so just be happy lesbians and WOC are represented and stop complainingā is not empowering. It implies that a certain level of representation is āgood enoughā, and that disabled people are being ungrateful or spoiled for being unhappy about their erasure. Why should I be grateful for being ignored?
Slandering the fans who loved and related to the original Cass as racists or misogynists is not empowering. It ignores the actual arguments in favor of strawmanning neurodivergent voices.
Telling neurodivergent people that they donāt need or derserve representation as much as other minority groups is not empowering. If youāre only interested in seeing the groups YOU care about making progress, youāre not progressive.
IGNORING OR JUSTIFYING ABLEISM IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE EMPOWERING!
Itās perfectly acceptable to like Birds Of Prey, and to appreciate what it does for representation, but there is NO excuse for Cass to not have her disabilities, especially in a film talked up for how progressive it is.
Itās a shame that we never got to see Steph having to interact in high society like the rest of the Batfamily did since it would have been interesting since she grew up in one of Gothamās poorest areaās so itās like an entire different planet
Imagine Tim taking Steph to a fancy restaurant because heās trying to be romantic and a good boy friend meanwhile Steph is is just thinking āsalad fork??? Salad fork??? SALAD FORK???ā with increasing desperation
look Iāll be the first to agree colleges couldnāt possibly take more money from us without just making Faustian Bargains but if one more freshman trips a fire alarm at 1am and makes the whole building evacuate because they donāt know how to make popcorn Iām gonna fill the whole lobby with sand
